Chapter 01 · the story

A one-litre Hofbräu Maß weighs almost three kilograms full, and the waitress carries eight at a time down the aisle of a tent that holds ten thousand people singing the same song. Munich does this every September and treats it as civic infrastructure.

The Glockenspiel on the Neues Rathaus starts at 11am sharp and the square stops moving. Forty-three bells, thirty-two figures, two scenes — the 1568 wedding of Duke Wilhelm V and then the Schäfflertanz coopers’ dance from the plague year of 1517 — fifteen minutes of gilt-painted automata performing on a 1908 carillon while the crowd on Marienplatz tilts its phones up at the same angle. The Rathaus itself is neo-Gothic theatre, finished in 1909 to look six hundred years older than it is. The city is comfortable with this.

The Theresienwiese is a forty-minute walk west or four stops on the U-Bahn, and inside the Hofbräu tent the brass band on the central podium plays Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit every fifteen minutes and the entire benchful stands up. The Maß is a one-litre glass mug of Helles served at six degrees Celsius and the rule is that you hold the handle, not the body, because warming the beer is a moral failing. Schottenhamel is where the mayor taps the first keg at noon on opening Saturday with the cry O’zapft is, and the season runs from there for sixteen days.

Out at the Eisbach in the Englischer Garten the standing wave breaks year-round under the Prinzregentenstrasse bridge. Surfers queue on both banks, drop in, ride for about forty seconds, get washed off, walk back upstream. The wave was an accident — engineers altered the river bed in the 1970s and the locals colonised the result. In February they wear five-millimetre wetsuits. The neoprene racks on the bridge railings look like ski racks.

What Munich asks is whether a city can throw a festival this enormous without the festival becoming the city, and the answer is yes. On Tuesday morning the Viktualienmarkt grandmothers are still selling white asparagus by the kilo and the office workers buy Leberkäse rolls on the way to the U-Bahn, while four kilometres west the tents are being scrubbed for the next round. The two cities — the festival one and the actual one — share staff, beer, and pavement, and somehow neither breaks.

Chapter 02 · the story

Ludwig II broke ground on Neuschwanstein in 1869 and drowned in the Starnberger See in 1886 with the castle still unfinished. He spent eleven nights inside it before he died. The building is a stage set for an audience of one, and that audience never arrived.

The bus from Hohenschwangau village climbs the hill in eight minutes and drops the morning groups at the gate. Inside, the tour is timed to the second — thirty minutes, single direction, no photos, no lingering — through the Throne Room with its mosaic floor of two million stones and the bedchamber where the carved-oak canopy took fourteen woodcarvers four and a half years. The throne itself was never installed. Ludwig wanted a Byzantine apse with the king as holy figure at its centre; the architects were still drawing the throne when he was declared insane and removed from the castle on 12 June 1886. He was dead within seventy-two hours.

The walk up to the Marienbrücke takes twenty minutes from the castle on a gravel path through the spruce. The bridge crosses the Pöllat gorge a hundred metres above the river and the postcard angle — the one printed on every fridge magnet in Füssen — is from the middle of the span, looking back. In afternoon light the lime- stone of the castle goes peach against the dark Tegelberg forest, and the rooftops which from below looked white are actually a pale warm grey. Below and to the north, the Forggensee is a flat blue shape with sailboats on it; in the south, the Tirolean Alps step back in layers.

Hohenschwangau on the lower hill is the one Ludwig actually grew up in — 1837, neo-Gothic, restored by his father Maximilian II — and the rooms are smaller and the windows look directly across the valley at the bigger castle his son would later build. The child who would commission Neuschwanstein could see the empty hilltop from his bedroom for the first nineteen years of his life. Maximilian hung the walls with murals of Lohengrin and Tannhäuser and the medi- eval legends. Ludwig read them as instructions.

What Füssen carries is the gap between vision and finish. Walt Disney visited in 1954 and built Sleeping Beauty’s castle from the silhouette, and at Anaheim the silhouette is the whole thing — there is nothing behind the facade because nothing needs to be. At Neuschwanstein the back rooms are unfinished and the second-floor corridor has bare brick where the panelling was never installed. Ludwig got the silhou- ette right; he ran out of time on everything else. The mountain has the better deal.

Chapter 03 · the story

The Königssee runs eight kilometres back into a notch under the Watzmann east wall and the boats have been electric since 1909 because the captains worked out, before the engineers did, that the lake's silence was the thing.

The boat leaves Schönau every half-hour in season and pushes off silently into water the colour of a green glass bottle. The Watzmann’s east face rises 1,800 metres straight out of the water on the starboard side — the second-highest wall in the Eastern Alps after the Eiger — and the boat is so quiet that the rope creaking on the cleats is the loudest sound on board. Halfway down the lake the captain cuts the motor at the echo wall, lifts a flugelhorn from the locker beside the wheel, and plays a four-note phrase. The cliff returns it once, clean and complete. He does this seven times a day and the trick still works on everyone.

St Bartholomä sits on a peninsula on the western shore — the pilgrim- age chapel with the three onion-domes painted Bavarian red, founded in 1134, the current building from 1697 — and behind it the meadow runs up to the foot of the wall. Beyond Salet at the far end of the lake, a flat twenty-minute walk crosses to the Obersee, which is smaller and stiller and ends in the Röthbach, Germany’s tallest waterfall at 470 metres. On a still afternoon the upper lake reflects the cliffs without a wrinkle, and the only sound is the plonk of a cow bell from the alm above.

The Kehlsteinhaus is the other side of the same mountain range, and its history is the inverse of the Königssee’s. Built in 1938 as a fifty-fifth-birthday gift from Martin Bormann to Hitler, the road up to the Kehlstein summit at 1,834 metres took 3,000 workers thirteen months and cost thirty million Reichsmarks. The brass-lined eleva- tor inside the granite — the original, still working, still rising 124 metres in forty-one seconds — opens onto the teahouse where Hitler is recorded as having spent fewer than fourteen visits. The building is unremarkable. The view, across the Untersberg into Salzburg, is a postcard the Reich could not stop the mountain from being.

What Berchtesgaden carries is the same mountain doing two things at once — the chapel on the lake, the bunker on the summit, the salt-mine slide the Celts started in the seventh century BC. The Watzmann does not care which century is looking at it. The visitor has to pick a side or carry both.

Chapter 04 · the story

At 8pm the night watchman steps out of the Marktplatz shadow in a black wool cloak with a halberd over his shoulder and a brass horn on a cord, and for sixty minutes the town does what the town has been doing since 1274.

The Stadtmauer goes around the entire town — 2.5 kilometres, forty- two towers, four gates, a covered timber walkway above the inner parapet with arrow-slits at shoulder height. The walls survived because Rothenburg went broke in the Thirty Years War, was occupied by Tilly in 1631, and never recovered enough to demolish anything. Poverty preserved it. On 31 March 1945 American bombers dropped sixteen high-explosive bombs on the eastern quarter, but the Assistant US Secretary of War John McCloy, whose mother had shown him pictures of Rothenburg as a child, ordered the artillery to stand down. The eastern wall was rebuilt brick by brick from 1948 onward, mostly with donations from American visitors, and each stretch carries a small plaque with the donor’s name.

The Plönlein is the corner where Spitalgasse forks left and Kobolzellergasse forks right, with the yellow half-timbered house in the middle and the Siebersturm tower behind. It is the most photographed corner in Germany and earns it — the Marktplatz red of the lower storey is a precise oxide pigment the conservation code specifies, and the timber framing is fifteenth-century. Käthe Wohlfahrt’s emporium on Herrngasse sells glass baubles and wooden nutcrackers and 365-day Christmas every day of the year, which is either the most German thing in Germany or a slight excess of it.

At 8pm the night watchman tour starts on the steps of the Rathaus. The man carries a horn and a halberd and a tin lantern, and the tour walks through cobbled streets that have emptied because the day-trippers have driven back to Munich. He talks about the sausage tax of 1492 and the Meistertrunk legend in which Mayor Nusch supposedly drank three and a quarter litres of Franconian wine in one draught to save the town from Tilly’s army. The fee is collected in cash at the end, into a leather pouch on his belt.

What Rothenburg carries, on the last night before the flight home, is that medieval Europe is mostly gone and the small piece that isn’t gone exists by accident — bankruptcy, then American senti- ment, then dollar-funded reconstruction of a wall that didn’t need to come back. The town is a museum that didn’t mean to become one, and now performs the role with a halberd at 8pm.

Final morning in Rothenburg — the medieval night-watchman tour repeats every evening but the daytime walk along the Stadtmauer city-wall is the better one. Train back to Munich, one last currywurst at the station, S-Bahn to Flughafen, Lufthansa east at 9pm. Hong Kong by next-day evening. Eight nights — three in the Theresienwiese tents, two under Neuschwanstein''s towers, two by the green water of the Königssee, one inside the medieval city walls. The smell of roasted almonds and the sound of the Oktoberfest brass already half-remembered.
