Bavaria · the Oktoberfest week
Eight nights through Bavaria across opening weekend of Oktoberfest · solo · Munich + Füssen + Berchtesgaden + Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Three nights in Munich — the Hofbräuhaus, Marienplatz with the glockenspiel at 11am + 12pm + 5pm, Englischer Garten and the river surfers at the Eisbach wave, the Pinakothek der Moderne and Alte Pinakothek for the Dürers and the Rubens, BMW Welt + Olympic Park, the Dachau Memorial as the obligatory historical visit, and the Theresienwiese for two full afternoons in the Oktoberfest tents (Hofbräu and Schottenhamel for the Maß beers and the brass-band oompah). Train south to Füssen for two nights at Hohenschwangau — both the Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles in one day, Wieskirche rococo on day two, the Plansee lake walk. East to Berchtesgaden for two nights — Königssee electric-boat to St Bartholomä and Salet for the Obersee walk, Eagle”s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) at 1,834 m, the salt-mine tour, and (if there”s time) a Salzburg side-trip. Final night at Rothenburg ob der Tauber up the Romantic Road — the medieval city walls still encircling the entire town, the Plönlein corner, the night-watchman tour at 8pm.
Wheels down at Munich. Then the long week of the lederhosen.
Out of Hong Kong on a Sunday night, into Munich by Monday lunch — Lufthansa direct, twelve hours over the Pole. Eight nights ahead through Bavaria — three in Munich for the opening weekend of Oktoberfest in the Theresienwiese tents, two at Füssen under Ludwig II''s Disneyland-original Neuschwanstein castle, two at Berchtesgaden for the Königssee fjord and the Eagle''s Nest, one final night up the Romantic Road at Rothenburg for the medieval-towers-still-standing town. The Maß of Hofbräu beer, the white sausage Weisswurst breakfast (always before noon), the pretzel the size of a steering wheel — the German Alps in their autumn week of release.
