Chapter 01 · the story

One dirham buys a seat on the abra across Dubai Creek, and the crossing takes four minutes. On one bank, the Spice Souk smells of cardamom and frankincense. On the other, the Burj Khalifa goes up 828 metres. The city is both at once.

The abra is a wooden boat with a diesel engine and a bench down the middle, and it has been crossing Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai for longer than anyone alive can remember. The fare is one dirham — about twenty-seven cents — paid to a man who walks the bench while the boat is moving. The crossing takes four minutes. On the Deira side, the Spice Souk is a covered alley smelling of cardamom and saffron and dried lime, the sacks open to the walkway, and the Gold Souk a few streets north has more gold on display in one window than most countries hold in their reserves. Bargaining is expected. Cash is preferred.

A twenty-minute Careem ride south, the Burj Khalifa goes up 828 metres into the haze. The observation deck on level 148 is the highest in the world that opens to the public; the lift takes 60 seconds and your ears pop twice. From the top, the city is a gridded reef on the desert with the Persian Gulf one side and the Empty Quarter the other, and you can see the curvature of nothing in particular but feel it anyway. Below, the Dubai Fountain throws water 150 metres into the air to Time to Say Goodbye every half hour from 6pm.

Dubai Mall is the largest shopping mall on Earth by area — 1,200 shops, a ten-million-litre aquarium tank with sand tiger sharks gliding past the food court, an Olympic-size ice rink, a souk themed on the souk three kilometres north of here. The Mall does not pretend the Creek is its parent. The Creek does not pretend the Mall is its child. They share a city the way two strangers share an elevator: politely, and without acknowledgement.

What stays after Dubai is the speed at which the two histories agree to sit beside one another. Oil was discovered in 1966. The Burj Khalifa opened in 2010. Forty-four years, sea to sky. The abra still costs one dirham.

Chapter 02 · the story

The Grand Mosque's prayer hall holds the world's largest hand-knotted carpet — 5,627 square metres, two years and 1,200 weavers — and seven chandeliers dripping Swarovski crystal onto floor-marble inlaid with vine patterns that nobody is permitted to step on with shoes.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is white. Not off-white, not bone — the white of fresh Macedonian marble cut to a polish so high that at sunset the whole 22-hectare complex glows pink for forty minutes and then violet for another twenty. There are 82 domes, 1,096 external columns inlaid with semi-precious stones, four minarets at 107 metres each, and a courtyard floor of floral marble inlay so large that walking across it is an exercise in deciding which flower to step on.

Inside the main prayer hall, the carpet is one piece. It was woven by 1,200 Iranian women in Mashhad over two years, shipped in nine sections, joined on the floor by hand — the seams invisible. The chandeliers above are gold-plated stainless steel hung with Swarovski crystal; the central one weighs twelve tonnes and the ceiling had to be engineered around it. The mosque was Sheikh Zayed’s project before his death in 2004 and his tomb is in the courtyard. He is buried in the building he designed.

Thirty minutes north on Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi sits half in the sea under a dome 180 metres across and 7,500 tonnes heavy. Jean Nouvel designed the dome as eight layers of perforated steel stars stacked at different angles, so that when sunlight passes through it falls on the galleries below as a slowly shifting constellation he calls a rain of light. Inside, a Leonardo hangs three rooms from a Mesopotamian seal three rooms from a Vietnamese Buddha. The argument the museum is making is that the art of every culture is the art of one.

The Corniche runs eight kilometres along the bay between the two buildings. The mosque was finished in 2007. The Louvre opened in 2017. The city is still deciding what kind of capital it is.

Chapter 03 · the story

The Empty Quarter is 650,000 square kilometres of sand without a single permanent road, river, or town inside it. Tel Moreeb rises 300 metres off the desert floor. The dune behind the resort sings when the wind moves it. Bedouin call this sound *al-rimal taghanni* — the sands singing.

The drive in is the geography lesson. The motorway south from Abu Dhabi runs flat and asphalted for two hours past the salt flats of the Sabkhat Matti, then the tarmac bends west into the Liwa Crescent — a 100-kilometre arc of date-palm oases that the Bani Yas tribe has farmed for four hundred years — and then the road just stops. From the end of the tarmac, a graded sand track lifts into the Rub’ al Khali, the Empty Quarter, the largest contiguous sand desert on Earth, and the dunes climb. Tel Moreeb, the landmark dune behind the resort, is 300 metres high. From its crest, the horizon is sand in every direction for 650,000 square kilometres.

Qasr Al Sarab — palace of the mirage — sits in a bowl between the dunes, built as a fortress in fired clay and palm, the walls the same colour as the sand they rise from. The camels wait at 4:30pm for the sunset ride. They are slower than they look and the saddle is a Bedouin wood frame padded with sheepskin, and after an hour on the ridge the sun goes the colour of the dune and the dune goes the colour of the sun and there is nothing else to look at for two hundred miles.

The stargazing happens after dinner. The astronomer-guide sets up a Dobsonian on a low ridge a kilometre from the resort lights, and in December the winter Milky Way runs vertically through Orion and into Canis Major. Jupiter is up. Saturn is up. The Andromeda galaxy — two and a half million light-years out — is naked-eye if you know where to look. The guide knows.

What stays after Liwa is the scale. Dubai sells height; Abu Dhabi sells weight; the Empty Quarter sells extent. The desert was here before the cities and will be here after them. The dune sings either way.

Dec 11 · Day 8 · the last one

Last karak chai at Last Exit. Then the long flight east.

Final morning back in Dubai — karak chai (cardamom + condensed milk + saffron) at one of the highway-side Last Exit food truck parks, a last hour at the Mall of the Emirates SkiDubai just because. Metro to DXB, Emirates east at midnight back to Hong Kong. Seven nights — four through Dubai''s contradictions, two on Saadiyat Island for the Mosque and the Louvre, one in the silence of the Liwa dunes. The sound of the Friday-noon adhan over the marina and the orange of the Empty Quarter sunset already half-remembered.
