Dec 4 · Day 1 · the first one

Wheels down at DXB. Then the long week of the Gulf.

Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday morning, Dubai by Saturday evening — Emirates direct, eight hours due west. Seven nights ahead in the Emirates — four in Dubai for the Burj Khalifa and the fountain, the desert dune-bashing safari, the old gold and spice souks of Deira, two in Abu Dhabi for Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi under Jean Nouvel''s dome, one final night down at Qasr Al Sarab in the Empty Quarter desert. December is the cusp — the long blue-sky high season, 24 °C days and 14 °C nights, the sand cool enough to walk barefoot at sunset and the malls already strung with Christmas lights from October.
