Wheels down in Tana. Then the dry season opens.

Out of Hong Kong on a Tuesday, Antananarivo by Wednesday afternoon via the Mauritius hop. Ten nights ahead on an island that broke off from Africa ninety million years ago and made up its own rules — the lemurs that nobody else has, the baobabs that grow nowhere else, the fossa with retractable claws and the dawn call of the indri that carries three kilometres through the rainforest. Austral spring, the dry season at its peak, the jacarandas still in bloom.

Chapter 01 · Sep 15 Day 1

Antananarivo · the hill capital

Andasibe · the indri at dawn

Antsirabe · the thermal town

One night on the high plateau to break the long RN7 descent. Pousse-pousse runners in red shirts, brick kilns smoking on the outskirts, the cold thin air of 1500 metres and the smell of eucalyptus at dusk.

Morondava · the baobabs

Sunrise at the Avenue · twelve grandidier baobabs eight hundred years old, trunks the colour of rust, branches like inverted roots. The road is laterite, the dust is everywhere, and the silhouette at sunset is the picture Madagascar uses on its own banknotes.

Malaria west coast is endemic year-round · prophylaxis from a travel clinic, DEET at dusk

Sep 25 · Day 11 · the last one

Last light on the tsingy. Then the long flight east.

Final morning above the Mozambique Channel, the white coves of Anjajavy already pewter in the dawn. A coffee on the lodge terrace, a charter back to Tana, the last of the vanilla and the last of the ariary spent at Ivato. Mauritius by midnight, Hong Kong by the day after. Ten nights — every one of them yours, the red island already half-remembered.
