Out of Hong Kong on a Tuesday, Antananarivo by Wednesday afternoon via the Mauritius hop. Ten nights ahead on an island that broke off from Africa ninety million years ago and made up its own rules — the lemurs that nobody else has, the baobabs that grow nowhere else, the fossa with retractable claws and the dawn call of the indri that carries three kilometres through the rainforest. Chapter 01 · the story

Tana sits at 1,280 m on twelve hills, and every direction from the Haute-Ville is a flight of stone stairs. The Rova is a burnt shell on the highest one — gutted in a 1995 fire that the city still talks about — and the name of every place around it has four syllables minimum.

The drive in from Ivato is two hours for fifteen kilometres because the road into Tana is one lane in each direction and the trucks from the port at Toamasina use it too. The taxi is a beige Renault 4L from the 1970s, kept alive by a mechanic in Andravoahangy who can machine a piston by hand. The driver speaks French to me and Malagasy to the petrol attendant and English on the phone to his cousin in Réunion, switching mid-sentence without noticing.

The city is built on twelve hills, and the Haute-Ville at the top is reached by stairs — long flights of granite blocks worn smooth, the same stairs the menalamba rebels climbed in 1895 and the same ones the kabary orators climb today on a Sunday morning to speak from the parapet. The Rova of Manjakamiadana is the burnt shell of the queen’s palace at the summit, gutted in a fire in 1995 that nobody has ever explained, the wooden interior gone and the stone walls left like a quiet warning. From the terrace you can see the rice paddies running right up to the airport runway.

The market at Andravoahangy sells vanilla pods in bundles tied with raffia, the long black kind that smells of tobacco and caramel and is worth more by weight than silver was in 1850. Around the corner a woman is grilling zebu skewers over charcoal and a man is selling pirated CDs of salegy music. The place names on the signs — Antaninarenina, Ambatomitsangana, Antsahavola, Andohalo — all start with the locative An- and run on into four and five syllables, the language doing what the city does, piling layers and never quite stopping.

What stays after one night in Tana is the altitude. At 1,280 m the light is hard and the woodsmoke from the cooking fires sits in the valleys at dusk, and the city of stairs glows orange hill by hill, and you understand why every Malagasy proverb is about patience.

Chapter 02 · the story

The indri is the largest lemur on earth and the only one that sings. The territorial call carries four kilometres through the canopy at dawn, a rising banshee siren that drops to a long mourning vowel — the Malagasy word babakoto means father-of-the-boy, and the story goes that the song is the family still calling for their lost son.

The lodge wakes at 4:30 because the indri start at five and you have to be on the path before they begin. The forest at that hour is one degree above freezing — Andasibe is at 950 m and the highland mist comes down to the canopy floor — and the only sound on the walk in is the guide’s machete clearing wet branches and the breath of three people deciding this was worth getting up for.

Then the first call starts. It is not what anyone expects. The indri is the size of a four-year-old child, black and white, nearly tail-less, and it sings like a humpback whale crossed with an air-raid siren — a rising wail that goes up two octaves and holds, and then a second voice joins from a tree forty metres away, and a third, and the family group is calling its territory across the canopy, and the sound carries cleanly for four kilometres because the rainforest acts as a tuned instrument. The indri does not survive in captivity. Every one alive is in this forest or the few like it.

The guide, who is from the village and trained by the Mitsinjo association, knows the family group by sight — the mother with the half-bitten ear, the juvenile that fell out of the tree last March and is still favouring one leg. He whispers the names in Malagasy. Babakoto. Father of the boy. The legend is that the indri are the descendants of a Malagasy family whose son climbed into the trees and never came down, and the song is the family still calling.

The night walk, after dinner, is different. Headlamps catch the eye-shine of mouse lemurs the size of a fist, a Parson’s chameleon the length of a forearm sleeping on a branch at eye level, the orange glint of a leaf-tailed gecko that does not look like a gecko until it moves. Madagascar broke off from Africa eighty-eight million years ago. Everything in this forest is found nowhere else.

Chapter 03 · the story

Antsirabe is Madagascar's second city, which on the high plateau means slower, cooler, and run by the pousse-pousse — the hand-pulled rickshaws that came with the Indian railway workers in 1923 and stayed. There are seven thousand registered in the town and the runners know every side street by the bicycle-bell signal.

The thermal springs are the reason the French built Antsirabe in the first place — Antsirabe means “the place where there is much salt” in the Merina dialect, the salt being the mineral crust the hot water leaves on the basin stones. The colonial governor Gallieni came up here in 1897 to take the waters and built the Hôtel des Thermes the year after, a long pink building with green shutters and a ballroom that has not been swept since 1962. The thermal pools still run. The water comes out at 38°C and smells faintly of sulphur and the towels at the changing booth are folded in stacks of twelve.

In the morning the pousse-pousse runners line up outside the hotel. They wear matching red shirts numbered on the back — the mairie issues the licence and the number — and the harness is two long wooden shafts and a pad of folded cloth across the small of the back. The runner I get is named Tojo, he is twenty-six, he has been running for eleven years, and he asks where I want to go in French and then in slightly slower French when I miss it the first time. The Avenue de l’Indépendance is wide and quiet and the brick kilns smoke at the edge of town.

Lac Tritriva is twenty kilometres out on a dirt track that climbs through eucalyptus plantation and falls suddenly into a crater the colour of dark jade. The lake is in an extinct volcano and the legend, which the guide tells without smiling, is that two lovers from rival villages drowned themselves here and their spirits live in the water, and the lake’s level rises and falls the opposite way from the season’s rain. The water is cold. The walls are vertical. The path around the rim is a goat track.

What stays from Antsirabe is the pace. The capital is braided traffic and the coast is laterite dust, but the plateau runs on bicycle bells and brick kilns, and the second-largest city is the one that gets to breathe.

Chapter 04 · the story

Adansonia grandidieri can live two thousand five hundred years. The Avenue is a stand of about twenty of them on a stretch of laterite road that the Malagasy government has been promising to protect since 2007 and still has not. The trees were there before the road. The road runs between them now because no one dared cut them down.

The drive from Antsirabe takes nine hours on RN7 and then RN8 and then a road that loses its tar and becomes a graded laterite track around Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. Madagascar’s west is dry country — the rainforest stopped at the spine of the island, the plateau is grassland, and by the time you drop down to the Mozambique Channel the soil is rust-red and the only crop is manioc. The zebu carts on the verge raise dust that sits in the air for an hour after they pass.

The baobabs appear about twenty kilometres before Morondava, in ones and twos at first and then in a long line on both sides of the road. The Avenue is the postcard — twelve to fifteen of the biggest grandidieri, trunks the colour of old terracotta, branches like inverted roots reaching for the sky. The Malagasy name is renala, meaning “mother of the forest”, though the forest these were planted as the matrons of is mostly gone. They are what’s left. Each tree is about eight hundred years old at the trunk and the local guides will tell you that the largest is two and a half millennia, which may be true and may be a number that grows with the telling.

Sunset is the picture. The road empties around 5:30, the tour buses leave for Morondava before dark, and what is left is the trunks going from orange to red to black against a sky that goes from red to violet to indigo, and a zebu cart crossing the silhouette of one of them on its way home.

Kirindy Forest is sixty kilometres further north on the same road. The reserve is dry deciduous forest, leafless in September, and the campsite at the centre is where the fossa come at dusk to patrol the cooking-fire perimeter. The fossa is a cat-shaped carnivore three feet long, found only on Madagascar, the apex predator of the lemur food chain, and it walks straight through the picnic tables looking sideways at you the way a fox would.

A private peninsula on the northwest coast reached only by air or sea. Tsingy karst rising from white coves, Coquerel's sifaka leaping through the lodge garden at breakfast, a baobab grove on the cliff and a baobab on the beach. The last three nights are quiet on purpose.

Chapter 05 · the story

Madagascar holds about five percent of the world's known species on less than half a percent of its land surface, and ninety percent of those are endemic — found only here, nowhere else. Anjajavy's peninsula is the density rule in miniature: a private reserve where the tsingy comes to the sea and the Coquerel's sifaka come to the breakfast table.

The Cessna from Tana flies for ninety minutes over country with no roads. The cabin is six seats and the pilot turns around to brief the safety card himself. The dirt strip at Anjajavy is cut into a clearing in dry deciduous forest and the lodge truck meets the plane and drives the kilometre to the bay. There is no village. There is no other lodge. The peninsula was bought in the 1990s by a French family who fenced it from the surrounding charcoal-burning and let the forest come back, and what came back was the tsingy and the sifaka and a baobab grove on the cliff that nobody had touched.

The tsingy is the formation Madagascar is famous for after the baobabs — limestone karst eroded by acid rainwater into a forest of knife-edged pinnacles, vertical, head-high to ten metres, sharp enough that the Malagasy word tsingy means “where one cannot walk barefoot”. The Anjajavy tsingy is the coastal kind, smaller than the inland Bemaraha cathedral-tsingy but pressed right against the Mozambique Channel — limestone teeth rising out of white sand coves, baobabs growing improbably from the crevices, the sea two metres below at low tide.

The Coquerel’s sifaka come down to the lodge garden at six in the morning for the figs that fall overnight. They are white with chestnut patches on the chest and thighs, long-limbed, the size of a small child, and they move by vertical clinging and leaping — pushing off one trunk and crossing five metres sideways through the air with their hands tucked, landing upright on the next. They look at you while they eat. They have been habituated for thirty years and there is no fence between the dining terrace and the forest.

The dhow to Moramba Bay leaves at ten. The bay is a scatter of sandstone islets eroded into mushroom shapes, more baobabs growing out of the sea than on the land, no other boats, and at lunch the crew grills capitaine on the beach of an island that does not appear on most maps.

Last light on the tsingy. Then the long flight east.

Final morning above the Mozambique Channel, the white coves of Anjajavy already pewter in the dawn. A coffee on the lodge terrace, a charter back to Tana, the last of the vanilla and the last of the ariary spent at Ivato. Mauritius by midnight, Hong Kong by the day after. Ten nights — every one of them yours, the red island already half-remembered.
