Wales · the Cymru week

Seven nights through Wales at the late-September cusp · solo · rental car from Cardiff. Drive west to Pembrokeshire for two nights — the 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path is one of the National Trails, walk a 5-km section at St Davids Head, the smallest city in the UK (St Davids, population 1,800), the puffin colony at Skomer Island (May-July only, missed in September), the medieval walled town of Tenby with the painted Georgian houses on the south Pembrokeshire coast. Drive north 5 hr to Snowdonia for three nights — Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) 1,085-m summit via the Llanberis Path (4 hr up, 3 hr down, the easiest route), Snowdon Mountain Railway alternative (if knees can”t do the descent), Cadair Idris day-hike, the slate-quarry villages of Llanberis + Blaenau Ffestiniog (UNESCO World Heritage for the slate-landscape since 2021), Portmeirion (the Italianate fantasy village built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis 1925-75), the Llanddwyn Island walk on Anglesey. One final night in Conwy on the Anglesey-coast side — the medieval walled town with the complete 1283 Edward I city walls still encircling the town, Conwy Castle on the headland, Beaumaris Castle across the Menai Strait on Anglesey, and a last drive back south to Manchester for the long flight home.

Wheels down at Heathrow. Then the long week of the Cymru.

Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Heathrow by Saturday morning, Cardiff by Saturday afternoon — Cathay direct + GWR train, fifteen hours all in. Seven nights ahead through Wales — one in Cardiff for the Capital and the Castle, two in Pembrokeshire on the south-west tip for the coastal-path walks and the puffin season''s tail (just before the migration south), three in Snowdonia for Yr Wyddfa''s 1,085-m summit and the slate-quarry villages of the north, one final night in Conwy on the Anglesey side for the medieval walled town. Late September is the cusp — end of the school summer, water still warm for swimming, the heather on the Carneddau still purple, and the Welsh weather at its most cooperative window.
