Yunnan · the Tea-Horse road
Nine nights up the old Tea-Horse Road from Kunming to the Tibetan plateau · solo · gain 1,400 m of altitude across three transit days. Two nights in Kunming — the Stone Forest UNESCO karst (90 min east), the Yuantong Temple, Dou Nan flower market, Old Street. High-speed train northwest to Dali for two nights — the Bai minority Old Town inside the four gates, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Monastery, Erhai Lake by e-bike along the eastern shore, Xizhou for the Bai courtyard houses and tie-dye workshops. Onward high-speed to Lijiang for three nights — the Naxi UNESCO Old Town, Black Dragon Pool with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in reflection, the Baisha frescoes, a full day at Tiger Leaping Gorge”s middle path above the Jinsha river. Final road climb to Shangri-La (Zhongdian) for two nights at 3,300 m — Songzanlin Monastery (the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, the “Little Potala”), Pudacuo National Park, and Dukezong Tibetan Old Town”s 24-tonne prayer wheel — before the flight back via Kunming.

Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday morning, into Kunming Changshui before lunch. Nine nights ahead up the old Tea-Horse Road — two in the provincial capital for the Stone Forest and the Spring City''s flower markets, two in Dali for the Bai minority Old Town and Erhai Lake under Cangshan, three in Lijiang for the Naxi Old Town and the Tiger Leaping Gorge, two final nights up on the Tibetan plateau at Shangri-La for Songzanlin Monastery and the high pasture lakes. The plateau climbs from 1,900 m at Kunming to 3,300 m at Shangri-La — three days of altitude gained, with March still cold at the top but the cherry and plum already opening at the foothills.

Final morning at Songzanlin Monastery — the "Little Potala" of Yunnan, prayer wheels in the dawn cold, the white-and-gold facade catching the first light over the high plateau. Diqing Shangri-La Airport to Kunming, then Kunming to Hong Kong in the evening. Nine nights — two through the Spring City''s lanes, two on the shore of Erhai under the three pagodas, three on the cobbles of the Naxi Old Town and the lip of Tiger Leaping Gorge, two on the plateau. The smell of pu-er tea and the cold of high altitude already half-remembered.
