Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday morning, into Kunming Changshui before lunch. Nine nights ahead up the old Tea-Horse Road — two in the provincial capital for the Stone Forest and the Spring City''s flower markets, two in Dali for the Bai minority Old Town and Erhai Lake under Cangshan, three in Lijiang for the Naxi Old Town and the Tiger Leaping Gorge, two final nights up on the Tibetan plateau at Shangri-La for Songzanlin Monastery and the high pasture lakes. The plateau climbs from 1,900 m at Kunming to 3,300 m at Shangri-La — three days of altitude gained, with March still cold at the top but the cherry and plum already opening at the foothills.

Two nights in Yunnan's provincial capital. Kunming sits at 1,900 m and keeps a 15–22 °C spring year-round — hence "Spring City". The Stone Forest karst on day one, the city's temples and markets on day two.

Chapter 01 · the story

Kunming sits at 1,900 m and refuses to have a winter. The seagulls fly in from Siberia each November and float on Cui Hu until March, the cherry trees at Yuantong open in the same week, and the only weather the city seems to know is spring.

The flight in lands on a plateau that has been keeping the same fifteen-to-twenty-two degrees since November. Stepping out of Changshui into the metro on line 6, the air is dry and the light is sharp the way only thin-atmosphere highland light is — a UV edge that the eastern seaboard cities never have. On Cui Hu the gulls are still here, four months after their migration, hovering two metres above old men who feed them dough cubes from paper bags. They will be gone by April.

The provincial museum on the south side keeps the bronzes from the Dianchi lake-shore Han tombs — the spiral-decorated cowrie drums of the Dian Kingdom, a Bronze-Age polity the central imperial court only learned about by accident in the second century BCE. The drums are pre-Han, pre-everything: lid figurines of warriors with topknots and bare chests, a herd of cattle in miniature, four oxen pulling a small bronze cart. There is no analogue in northern China for what is in those vitrines.

Out at the Stone Forest the karst pinnacles do the thing the brochure photographs already promised — limestone teeth pushed up out of the ground over 270 million years of sea-bed lift and erosion — but the real find is the Sani-style Yi minority guides, the women in indigo with the embroidered triangular headdress, who sing the local welcome song at the entrance and mean it the way old guides mean old songs.

By dusk the city pulls back to Jin Bi Lu and the crossing-the- bridge noodles arrive in a 16-bowl ritual at a Jianxin counter — the chicken broth so hot the surface oil seals the heat in, plates of raw quail egg, sliced ham, tofu skin, chrysanthemum petals, all tipped in one at a time. The bowl is the size of a small basin. The point is not the noodles. The point is the order.

Dali · Erhai Lake and the Bai gates

Two nights inside the four gates of Dali's Bai minority Old Town. Erhai Lake on the east, Cangshan Mountain on the west, the three Tang-dynasty pagodas of Chongsheng on the north — and the tie-dye workshops of Xizhou for a half-day side step.

Chapter 02 · the story

The Bai built the four-gate walls of Dali in 1382 and the grid inside has not moved since. Erhai is to the east, Cangshan's nineteen peaks to the west, and the three Tang pagodas hold the north — a town designed to be looked out from, not just lived in.

Dali sits at the same altitude as Kunming but the light is different — the lake throws it back up, the Cangshan range cuts the late-afternoon sun off early, and the UV is the kind that burns a nose in forty minutes of e-bike along the eastern shore. The Bai are the local minority, the third-largest of the fifty-six recognised groups, and the white walls with grey-tile caps and the blue-and-white woodblock-print door frames are theirs — the colour palette of a Bai courtyard house is the colour palette of the Dali plain.

At first light the eastern shore is fog. The 30 km stretch from Caicun north to Shuanglang is the postcard stretch — fishermen on cormorant boats, the long water, the snow on Malong Peak still holding into late March — and the cormorants still wear the throat rings, though they are tourist-show birds now, the real catch having ended a generation ago when Erhai was declared a protected ecology zone.

Three Pagodas at Chongsheng is the older Dali. The main pagoda, Qianxun, was finished in the 9th century under the Nanzhao kingdom — pre-Song, pre-Mongol, contemporary with the early Tang. The two smaller octagonal pagodas behind it lean very slightly inward, the way old brothers lean. The compound was levelled in the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt; only the pagodas, which had already survived an 1857 earthquake, are original.

Xizhou, twenty-five minutes north, is where the Bai tie-dye is. The Linden Centre’s old Yan family compound runs an afternoon workshop — the indigo vats, the bound-knot resist, the cloth emerging green and oxidising to blue in the courtyard air over twenty minutes — and the half-day is worth more than another hour inside the four gates of the Old Town, where Renmin Road has gone commercial.

Chapter 03 · the story

The Naxi built Lijiang around running water. Three streams drop from Black Dragon Pool, split into a grid of canals through the Old Town, and meet again at the southern end — the only Chinese UNESCO town that uses flow, not walls, as its central plan.

Dayan Old Town is the cobbled water-grid the Mu chieftains laid out in the 1200s, and the canals are still where the town remembers itself. Stone bridges every forty metres, the willows already breaking leaf in late March, the wooden shopfronts hanging signs in three scripts — Mandarin, English, and the Naxi dongba pictographs that look like a child’s drawing of a bird, a sun, a horse. Dongba is the only pictographic script still in ritual use anywhere in the world.

North of the Old Town the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain dominates the horizon at 5,596 m, white the entire year, and at first light from the south end of Black Dragon Pool the Wuhuan Pavilion bridge throws its reflection across the surface so cleanly that the photograph looks doubled. The pool is fed by a karst spring; the temperature stays constant; the mirror is the spring’s gift to the city.

The full day belongs to Tiger Leaping Gorge — one hour by minibus to Qiaotou, then the middle path, twenty-seven kilometres of trail cut into the cliff between the Haba and Yulong massifs. The Jinsha river runs three thousand seven hundred and ninety metres below the upper rim. The 28 Bends climbs from the guesthouse trail to the high ridge in switchback after switchback, the river a thin white line at the bottom, and the quiet of being above it is something the Old Town’s canals cannot offer.

Back in Lijiang at dusk the Naxi Ancient Music Society plays court music from the Tang and Song dynasties on instruments the rest of China stopped making in the eighteenth century — the oldest player is ninety-something, the youngest is sixty, the guzheng is older than the United States. The music is not performed. It is kept.

Shangri-La · the Little Potala

Two final nights up on the Tibetan plateau at 3,300 m. Songzanlin Monastery — the "Little Potala" of Yunnan — at sunrise, Pudacuo National Park's high-pasture lakes on a full day, the world's largest prayer wheel in Dukezong Old Town.

Chapter 04 · the story

Shangri-La is the edge of the Tibetan plateau at 3,300 m. The province changes names here — Han Yunnan ends, Khampa Tibet begins — and the body feels it as a half-second of delay on every flight of stairs. The air does not apologise.

The road climbs out of Lijiang along the Jinsha and lifts onto the plateau in three switchback hours. By the time the car crests the rim the trees have changed — pine and juniper instead of subtropical fir, the rhododendron not yet in bloom but the bushes everywhere — and the first prayer flags appear on the ridge above the road, faded red, yellow, blue, white, green, the five Tibetan element colours bleached by altitude UV.

Songzanlin Monastery, the “Little Potala” of Yunnan, was founded in 1679 by the fifth Dalai Lama, and the white-and-gold hill-fort facade above Lamuyangcuo lake is the second-largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery anywhere outside the Tibet Autonomous Region. At dawn the upper halls are still empty of tourists; the assembly hall butter lamps are being trimmed by a young monk; the chanting from the back is the long, slow, overtone-droning Gelug chant that does not really stop, just hands off between shifts. The whole compound smells of yak butter and juniper smoke.

In Dukezong Old Town on Turtle Hill the world’s largest prayer wheel — twenty-four tonnes of gilded copper, six storeys tall — takes five people leaning into the rail to turn it once. The correct direction is clockwise. Tibetan grandmothers in maroon chuba do a circuit at sunset, hands on the rail, voices low on the mantra, and the wheel groans and accelerates and groans again the way a heavy thing does when it remembers it has inertia.

The first night at altitude is the night of the slow stairs. Yak butter tea at a Tibetan house in Dukezong — the tea churned with rancid butter and salt, the colour of pale coffee, the flavour of something the body slowly admits it needs — and an early sleep with the window cracked for oxygen. The plateau asks the body to do less. The body, eventually, agrees.

Final morning at Songzanlin Monastery — the "Little Potala" of Yunnan, prayer wheels in the dawn cold, the white-and-gold facade catching the first light over the high plateau. Diqing Shangri-La Airport to Kunming, then Kunming to Hong Kong in the evening. Nine nights — two through the Spring City''s lanes, two on the shore of Erhai under the three pagodas, three on the cobbles of the Naxi Old Town and the lip of Tiger Leaping Gorge, two on the plateau. The smell of pu-er tea and the cold of high altitude already half-remembered.
