Out of Hong Kong on a Thursday, Tallinn by Friday morning — Finnair via Helsinki, the Gulf of Finland sliding past. Ten nights ahead across three small countries — three in Tallinn for the medieval Old Town and the Kadriorg palace, two on Saaremaa or by Pärnu for a beach-and-bog day, three in Riga for Art Nouveau and the Central Market''s five zeppelin hangars, two in Vilnius for the Užupis quirky republic and a day-trip out to Trakai water castle. Three nights inside the best-preserved medieval Old Town in northern Europe. Climb Toompea for the rooftops, drink coffee at Maiasmokk (1864), visit the KGB Museum on the 23rd floor of the old intourist hotel.

Final lunch at Etno Dvaras off Pilies gatvė — two cepelinai (potato zeppelins stuffed with pork) under a slick of cracklings and sour cream. Last walk down Vilnius Pilies past the Cathedral Square, bus to VNO airport, Finnair AY136 north at 17:00. Hong Kong by mid-morning the next day. Ten nights — three under Tallinn''s Toompea-hill spires, two along Latvian sand and pine, three through Riga''s Jugendstil facades, two in Vilnius''s baroque skyline, the kvass and the rūgštpienis and the long Baltic dusks already half-remembered.
