Chapter 01 · the story

On the 23rd floor of Hotel Viru the KGB left in a hurry in 1991 and forgot the headphones still plugged into the wall. Two floors down in the lobby a Finnish startup founder is collecting his e-residency card. Tallinn is doing both at once.

The walls around the Old Town are three metres thick at the base and twenty-six towers still stand, which is the highest tower count of any medieval fortification in northern Europe. Inside the walls the streets are limestone, the buildings are Hanseatic, the pharmacy on Town Hall Square has been operating continuously since 1422 and still sells marzipan animals from the same wooden cabinet. The signs in the Old Town are in Estonian, then English. The signs in the suburb of Lasnamäe — the Soviet-era panel-block district where a third of the city lives — are in Estonian, then Russian, and the order matters.

Hotel Viru opened in 1972 as the only place in Soviet Estonia where a Westerner was allowed to sleep. The top two floors were Intourist offices; the actual top floor, the 23rd, was an unmarked KGB radio station that the staff were told did not exist. When the Soviets left in August 1991 the agents went out a side door and the listening equipment stayed on the desks. The museum is still those rooms, the same desks, the headphones coiled where they were dropped.

Two tram stops east, the e-Residency office issues a digital ID card to anyone who wants to register a company in Estonia from anywhere on earth. The country has more startups per capita than any in the EU, Skype was written here, and the cafes on Vene tänav have the distinctive density of foreign laptops that signals a place that has decided to be small and global at the same time.

What stays is the texture of a city that has been occupied by Danes, Swedes, Germans, and Russians, and that has chosen — within thirty years of the last occupier leaving — to build its identity around fibre-optic and forest. The medieval walls and the e-residency card are the same answer, just five hundred years apart.

Chapter 02 · the story

The Mud Bath House at the western end of the promenade has been wrapping Estonians in warm Pärnu mud since 1838. In August the sun sets at 21:30 and the beach at Rannapromenaad stays bright until the last kohuke is gone from the kiosk.

The bus from Tallinn arrives at the central station two hours after leaving it, and the air is different the moment you step off — pine resin and something briny from the bay, the kind of late-summer softness that exists at exactly this latitude. Estonia’s west coast sits at 58 degrees north, which means the August sun rises before five and sets at half past nine, and the beach at the end of Supeluse tänav holds its light long enough that families are still building sandcastles at eight in the evening.

Pärnu has been the summer capital since the 1830s, when the first Russian aristocrats arrived for the mud cure and the wooden bath house went up on the dune behind the beach. The current Mud Bath House — the 1927 neoclassical replacement, white columns, copper roof — still pumps the same dark sulphurous mineral mud from the same seabed two kilometres out. The treatment is twenty minutes wrapped in black slurry at 38°C, then a freshwater rinse, then a rest with a glass of birch-leaf tea. People have been doing this for almost two hundred years.

Ninety minutes inland the country becomes Soomaa, which translates as “bogland”, and the raised peat bogs at Riisa are 8,000 years old and five metres deep. The boardwalk is two planks wide, the sphagnum on either side is the colour of rust and lime, the small pines are stunted by waterlogged soil and look — at close range — like bonsai. Estonian school children come here on field trips to learn that a third of their country is wetland and that this is not a problem to solve.

Midsummer is the high feast of the Estonian calendar, and even in late August the white-night residue is here in the long blue dusks. What the town offers is the specific Baltic-Lutheran proposition that summer is short, the sea is cold, the mud is warm, and you should be outside until the light gives up.

Chapter 03 · the story

Mikhail Eisenstein built forty buildings on a six-block stretch of Alberta iela between 1903 and 1906, every facade screaming sphinxes and peacocks and the architect's own face in plaster. His son Sergei grew up here and made Battleship Potemkin. The neighbourhood explains both.

Walk north from the Old Town across the Esplanade Park and the city changes register entirely. Alberta iela is six blocks of Jugendstil at a density that exists nowhere else on earth — UNESCO counts more Art Nouveau facades in central Riga than in Vienna, Brussels, or Barcelona. The architect Mikhail Eisenstein produced most of them in a frantic three-year burst between 1903 and 1906, while the city was the fastest growing port in the Russian Empire and the merchant class wanted buildings that announced exactly how new their money was. The result is Alberta 13 with its blue-painted peacocks, Alberta 4 with the women’s faces in plaster screaming open-mouthed at the street, and Strēlnieku 4a with two sphinxes flanking the door.

The Old Town is older and quieter. The Three Brothers on Mazā Pils iela are the oldest stone houses in Riga — the white one is fifteenth century, the yellow one seventeenth, the green one late seventeenth — and the doorways shrink as the centuries advance because the street level kept rising. The House of the Blackheads on Town Hall Square was destroyed by German bombs in 1941 and rebuilt in 1999 from the original 1334 blueprints, red brick and gold leaf, the four clocks on the facade telling Riga, Moscow, Greenwich, and local mean solar time.

The Central Market is south of the station in five domed hangars that were built in Vainoede in 1916 to house German zeppelin airships and moved to Riga in 1924, when the airships were no longer needed and the city needed a covered market. Each hangar specialises: fish in one, meat in another, dairy in a third. The smell of smoked Baltic sprat at nine in the morning is the smell of the country.

What runs underneath all of it is the language. Latvian was banned under Russification and again under Soviet rule, and the response was the Song Festival — a hundred thousand singers in white, every five years, on a single stage in Mežaparks, all of them holding the language up with their lungs.

Vilnius · the baroque capital

Two nights in the southernmost Baltic capital. Baroque skyline, the only "Republic" with its own constitution (Užupis), and a 14th-century water castle on a lake 30 min outside town.

Chapter 04 · the story

On 1 April 1997 the artists across the Vilnia stream declared themselves an independent republic with an army of twelve, a flag, a president, and a 41-article constitution that hangs in eight languages on a wall on Paupio gatvė. Article six reads everyone has the right to love.

The Old Town in Vilnius is the largest in Eastern Europe and the densest baroque skyline north of Rome — forty-eight churches inside a square kilometre, the surviving result of the city being Catholic-Jesuit by 1579 and never quite stopping. Sts Peter and Paul on Antakalnio has two thousand stucco figures on the interior walls, each carved between 1668 and 1676 by Italian masters who never finished a second commission. St Anne’s on Maironio is fifteenth century brick gothic so fine that Napoleon — the legend says — wanted to carry it back to Paris in the palm of his hand.

Across a footbridge over the Vilnia, Užupis is four blocks of crooked wooden houses, breakaway artists, and a bronze angel on a plinth at the centre of the main square. The neighbourhood declared itself an independent republic on April Fools’ Day 1997, complete with constitution, flag, anthem, and a standing army of twelve. The constitution is mounted in mirror-polished metal on a wall on Paupio gatvė, in Lithuanian, English, French, Russian, Polish, Yiddish, Esperanto, and Latvian. Article 12: a dog has the right to be a dog. Article 16: everyone has the right to be happy. Article 38: everyone has the right to understand nothing.

The KGB Museum on Aukų gatvė — Victims’ Street — is the actual former NKVD-KGB headquarters where Lithuanian partisans and dissidents were held, interrogated, and shot between 1944 and 1991. The cells in the basement are unchanged: the padded room, the water-torture room, the execution chamber with the floor sloped to a drain. Twenty thousand people came through this building. The names are carved on the exterior wall, the building’s own facade serving as the gravestone.

Thirty kilometres west the red-brick castle at Trakai sits on an island in Lake Galvė, built in the fourteenth century by Grand Duke Vytautas, defended by Karaim Turkic mercenaries he brought from Crimea and who stayed. Their descendants still live in the wooden houses along the lake and bake kibinai, the half-moon mutton pastries that the castle ran on.

Last cepelinai at Etno Dvaras. Then the flight home.

Final lunch at Etno Dvaras off Pilies gatvė — two cepelinai (potato zeppelins stuffed with pork) under a slick of cracklings and sour cream. Last walk down Vilnius Pilies past the Cathedral Square, bus to VNO airport, Finnair AY136 north at 17:00. Hong Kong by mid-morning the next day. Ten nights — three under Tallinn''s Toompea-hill spires, two along Latvian sand and pine, three through Riga''s Jugendstil facades, two in Vilnius''s baroque skyline, the kvass and the rūgštpienis and the long Baltic dusks already half-remembered.
