Wheels down at Kigali. Then the long volcanic spine.

Out of Hong Kong on a Thursday, Kigali by Friday evening — RwandAir via Dubai or Doha. Long dry season ahead in the East African Rift, days at 24 °C and nights crisp at altitude. Seven nights on a rental-driver loop through the most reforested country in Africa — two in Kigali for the Genocide Memorial and the cleanest capital in Africa, three at Volcanoes National Park for the once-in-a-lifetime hour with a mountain gorilla family (only ~1,000 left in the wild, half of them here), one at Lake Kivu for the shoreline village respite, and one final night on a long drive through Nyungwe rainforest for chimpanzees and the canopy walkway. Chapter 01 · the story

The Gisozi memorial holds 250,000 dead in mass graves at the centre of a city that, thirty years on, has the cleanest streets in Africa. The two facts have to sit next to one another. Kigali asks you to do the work of holding them both.

The driver from the airport asks where I’m from, then asks if I’ve been to the Memorial, then asks if I know the date 7 April. He waits for the answer. The road into the centre is a manicured boulevard with no plastic bags — they have been illegal since 2008, the policy holding even at the airport, where you surrender any plastic you arrived with to a smiling man in a uniform — and every hill in the city has been planted with eucalyptus and erythrina and the long-leafed wild fig that the Kinyarwanda word umuvumu means.

The country has the only female-majority parliament in the world. The signs on the highway are in Kinyarwanda, French, and English, in that order. The man at the front desk of the Mille Collines — the actual Mille Collines, the building from Hotel Rwanda, now quietly restored to a working hotel with a swimming pool and a patio serving Mützig — switches between all three depending on who asks. The buffet downstairs serves muzungu food and the brochettes outside on Kacyiru hill are 800 RWF.

At the Memorial at Gisozi the names go on into a fourth room and then a fifth, and you walk past them and through to the gardens where the mass graves are, and there is no good way to be a visitor in that garden. The plaques say Imana yirirwa ahandi igataha mu Rwanda — God spends the day elsewhere, but comes home to Rwanda to sleep — and the irony, if it is irony, is heavy.

What stays after Kigali is that the city is asking the same question its memorial asks, just sideways: how do you keep going. The answer it offers — manicured streets, women in parliament, eucalyptus on every hill, the brochette grills on Kacyiru, the plastic-bag law, the umuganda Saturday-morning communal cleanup that empties the city for four hours — is not the only possible answer. But it is an answer. The country is doing it on purpose.

Chapter 02 · the story

Half of all the mountain gorillas left in the world live on this one volcanic spine. The permit is fifteen hundred dollars for sixty minutes. The economics are brutal and deliberate — and the silverback, when he turns to look, is closer than any photograph.

The briefing at the Volcanoes National Park HQ is at seven. A ranger reads out the family allocations from a clipboard — Susa, Sabyinyo, Agashya, Igisha — and the porters from the Iby’Iwacu village wait at the edge of the car park in green fleece jackets, smoking, watching the muzungu in expensive boots. A porter costs ten dollars. You hire one even if you don’t need one. That is part of how the model works.

The climb up Bisoke is through stinging nettle and bamboo and the kind of mud that takes a boot off. Two trackers have been with the family since dawn — they radio back the coordinates and you walk in. Then the lead ranger holds up a hand and there is a silverback eight metres away, eating wild celery, not looking at anyone. He weighs more than two of you. He is not interested. A juvenile rolls across the path. The hour begins.

Sixty minutes is not long enough and is also exactly the right length. Any more and the habituation starts to do damage; any less and you would not believe what you saw. The mask stays on, the seven-metre rule slips when a young one wanders close, and the ranger’s whisper — don’t move, let him pass — is the only sound besides the family’s breathing.

The hike down is for Karisoke. Dian Fossey’s grave is at three thousand metres above the cloud line, plain concrete, beside Digit and twenty other gorillas she buried herself. The plaque is in English. No one loved gorillas more. The Rwandan state took her work and made it the basis of a national conservation economy. What stays after Volcanoes is the math — fifteen hundred dollars buys an hour, and the hour buys the family the next decade.

Lake Kivu · Gisenyi shoreline

One respite night on the lake. Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes (and one of the world's three "exploding lakes" with dissolved methane in its depths — but the surface is calm).

Chapter 03 · the story

Kivu is one of three lakes on earth that could overturn and suffocate everything along its shore. The surface is glass. Children swim off the Gisenyi sand. Goma sits a kilometre across the water, under a volcano. The lake holds its breath, and so does the town.

The road down from Musanze drops through tea plantations laid out like green corduroy on every slope. The driver slows for the bicycle taxis that come the other way, two passengers and a crate of bananas balanced on a frame meant for one. The lake appears below Rubavu the way a sea appears — sudden, wide, silver — and the first thing you notice is that it is silent. No boats with engines. The water at twenty-four degrees, year round.

At the Serena terrace the lakeshore curves north toward Goma, five minutes away, in a country that is not this one. The border post is at the end of the beach. Across the water the Nyiragongo volcano holds a permanent thin plume; in 2002 and again in 2021 it sent lava through the streets of the DRC city. Here on the Rwandan side, children are doing dive practice off a small concrete pier and a woman is selling sambaza — the small fried Kivu fish — in newspaper cones for five hundred francs.

The lake’s other story stays underneath. Three hundred metres down there are sixty cubic kilometres of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide, held in place by water pressure. Two African lakes have already done what Kivu could do — Nyos in 1986, Monoun in 1984 — released the gas in a single night and killed everyone on the shore. There is a methane-extraction plant on a barge off the eastern edge, drawing the gas off slowly into a power station. The bureaucratic name for what it does is degassing.

The sundowner is brochettes and a Mützig, the sun behind Nyiragongo turning the lake the colour of an unstruck bell. What stays after Kivu is the doubleness — the calmest water in Rwanda holding, very quietly, the largest dissolved bomb on the continent. The town does not discuss it. The town swims.

Chapter 04 · Aug 26 Day 7

Nyungwe · the rainforest canopy

One final night in the cloud-forest highlands. Nyungwe is the largest contiguous mountain rainforest in East Africa, home to 13 primate species, and the canopy walkway is 50 m above the forest floor.

Chapter 04 · the story

Nyungwe is older than the rift that made the lakes. Thirteen primate species move through a canopy that closed over this slope before there was a Rwanda to put a border around it. The walkway is seventy metres up, and the forest does not notice you are on it.

The chimps move fast. The trackers leave Uwinka before dawn and by the time the briefing ends at six they have already radioed in a position two ridges away. The walk in is through mahogany and ebony and giant tree-fern, the path soft with ten centuries of leaf, and the sound is what arrives first — a pant-hoot from somewhere above and to the left, then an answering call from a different direction, the troop spread out across half a kilometre of forest.

You see them in pieces. A back, a foot, a face for two seconds through a screen of leaves. They are not the gorillas. The gorillas waited. The chimps are everywhere and nowhere and the ranger keeps the group moving, half-running, until a male drops to a low branch and looks down — sharp, present, evaluating — and the forest goes quiet for the length of one breath. Then he is gone again, up.

Later the canopy walkway. A hundred and sixty metres of suspension bridge, seventy metres of air below it, anchored into the crowns of three trees. Albertine Rift endemics move past at eye level — the great blue turaco, the Rwenzori turaco, the paradise flycatcher with its long tail trailing like a comma. An L’Hoest’s monkey troop crosses underneath on the forest floor and the bridge shifts very slightly with the wind.

The drive back to Kigali is four and a half hours along the spine of the country, tea estates on every slope, the road following ridgelines because the valleys are too steep. What stays after Nyungwe is the order of things — this forest was already old when the volcanoes north of here were still building themselves, when the lake was still filling, when the people who would become Rwandan were still walking south out of the Sahel. The country is young. The forest is the oldest thing in it.

Aug 27 · Day 8 · the last one

Last brochettes at Hôtel des Mille Collines. Then the flight home.

Final dinner at the Mille Collines (yes, that one) — beef brochettes with a Mützig beer on the patio. Last walk through Kimironko Market for a small kitenge wrap, taxi to Kigali Airport at midnight, RwandAir WB341 east via Doha. Hong Kong by next-next-day evening. Seven nights — two through Kigali''s hilltop neighbourhoods, three at Volcanoes Park with the silverback an arm''s length away, one with Lake Kivu''s pewter water and one on the Nyungwe canopy walkway. The umutsima and the urwagwa and the long Virunga horizon already half-remembered.
