Rwanda · the mountain gorillas
A high-cost, high-impact week · seven nights, solo. Kigali for two nights at the start — Kigali Genocide Memorial (Gisozi · the most important contextual visit in the country), Kimironko Market for the kitenge cloth, Camp Kigali memorial for the ten Belgian UN peacekeepers killed 7 Apr 1994, Inema Arts Centre, dinner at Heaven Restaurant in Kiyovu. Drive 2 hr northwest to Musanze / Volcanoes NP for three nights — gorilla trek at dawn (one family per permit per day, 7 km hike at 2,400–3,200 m, one hour with the family), Dian Fossey grave hike (the founder of the Karisoke Research Center, buried beside her gorilla “Digit”), golden monkey trek, Iby”Iwacu cultural village. Drive 2.5 hr south to Lake Kivu for one night at Gisenyi / Rubavu — coffee from the slope plantations, boat to a Kivu island, sunset on the lakeshore. Drive 4 hr south to Nyungwe NP for one final night — chimpanzee trek (early start, 6 am, the chimps move fast in the rainforest), the canopy walkway 50 m above the forest floor, the source-of-the-Nile spring. Drive back to Kigali for the late flight.
Wheels down at Kigali. Then the long volcanic spine.
Out of Hong Kong on a Thursday, Kigali by Friday evening — RwandAir via Dubai or Doha. Long dry season ahead in the East African Rift, days at 24 °C and nights crisp at altitude. Seven nights on a rental-driver loop through the most reforested country in Africa — two in Kigali for the Genocide Memorial and the cleanest capital in Africa, three at Volcanoes National Park for the once-in-a-lifetime hour with a mountain gorilla family (only ~1,000 left in the wild, half of them here), one at Lake Kivu for the shoreline village respite, and one final night on a long drive through Nyungwe rainforest for chimpanzees and the canopy walkway. Permits at USD 1,500 per person per gorilla trek · the Rwanda model is high-cost low-volume conservation · and it works.
