Chapter 01 · the story

The 1950s American cars still run because they have to. A Chevy Bel Air idles at the corner of Obispo, a Plymouth Fury runs as a paladar shuttle, and the malecón at dusk is a parade of finned sedans nobody chose to keep — they just never had the chance to leave.

The cars are the first thing and the wrong thing to notice. Everyone notices them. A turquoise ‘57 Bel Air idles in front of the Hotel Inglaterra; a pink Plymouth Fury runs paladar shuttles between Vedado and Habana Vieja for ten USD a hop. They are kept running by hand because the US trade embargo in 1960 cut off the parts pipeline and nothing replaced it. The engines under the hoods are Soviet diesel, Korean four-cylinder, whatever the mechanic on the corner could weld in. The chrome stays American.

Habana Vieja was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982 and the restoration has been crawling block by block ever since. Plaza de la Catedral on a weekday morning is empty enough to hear pigeons, and the baroque limestone facade of the cathedral is the same coral rock the colonial builders cut from the harbour. Three blocks east, La Bodeguita del Medio still has Hemingway’s signature on the wall and charges six USD for a mojito he probably never drank there. The register is half tourist trap, half working bar; locals come in for the late set.

The malecón is where the city goes at sunset. The seawall runs five miles along the harbour, families and trovadores and rum-drinkers sitting on the same concrete lip while the spray comes over the parapet. From 1994 until 2021 the country ran on two currencies — CUC for tourists, CUP for everyone else — and the dual system is gone but its habits have not left. The casa particular host takes USD in cash; the corner shop takes CUP only. You learn which is which within an afternoon.

What stays after Havana is the sound. The city is loud in a way that costs nothing and means everything.

Chapter 02 · the story

The mogotes are limestone karst, two hundred metres tall, cathedral flanks rising straight out of red tobacco soil. A vegero rolls a cigar on his thigh and explains that the leaf is cured for forty-five days in a thatched barn before it sees a match.

The drive west from Havana climbs out of the city through pine and royal palms and then drops, somewhere past Pinar del Río, into a valley that does not look like the rest of Cuba. The mogotes are flat-floored haystack hills of limestone karst, the eroded remains of an ancient cave system whose roofs collapsed millennia ago. They sit two hundred metres above the valley floor with sheer vertical sides and rounded tops, and the red iron-rich earth between them is what gives Cuban tobacco its weight.

The fincas are small. The Cuban government nationalised most agriculture in 1959 but kept tobacco mostly private; the families who roll the country’s cigars work plots of a few hectares each, called vegas, and sell ninety percent of the crop to the state Habanos monopoly. The remaining ten percent is theirs to roll and sell directly. The vegero — the small-farmer cigar grower — works the leaf with a chaveta blade on his thigh, folds the binder in, caps the head with vegetable glue, and the cigar takes maybe four minutes start to finish.

The Mural de la Prehistoria is on the western flank of the Sierra de Viñales, a 120-metre-tall painting commissioned by Castro in 1961 from a student of Diego Rivera. It is loud, frankly bad, and unmissable. Horseback into the valley from any casa particular takes you past the mural, through tobacco rows, and on to the curing barns where the leaf hangs in long browning rows from the rafters for forty-five days.

What stays after Viñales is the porch at sundown. The mojito on the rail, the trio in guajira — three guitars and a clave — playing a tune the host’s father wrote, the mogotes going pink and then purple behind the curing barn. The valley does not announce itself. It just waits to be noticed.

Chapter 03 · the story

Cienfuegos was founded in 1819 by French settlers from Bordeaux and Louisiana, and the grid still shows it. Wide neoclassical streets, a Parisian-style central park, a malecón that curves the entire arc of Jagua Bay. The only Cuban city built by the French.

Cienfuegos is the youngest of the old cities, founded in April 1819 by Louis de Clouet, a French settler from Bordeaux via New Orleans, under a Spanish concession to colonise the bay. He brought forty-six families with him and laid the town out on a Cartesian grid, wide boulevards radiating from a central square, three- and four-storey neoclassical facades in pastel sherbet colours. It looks unlike anywhere else in Cuba because it was built by people who had never seen anywhere else in Cuba.

Parque Martí is the centre and Teatro Tomás Terry sits on its north side, an 1889 opera house built by the family of a Venezuelan-born sugar baron who made his fortune on Cienfuegos slave labour and left the city the theatre as a kind of restitution. Caruso sang there in 1920. Sarah Bernhardt played the same stage. The interior is horseshoe Italianate, three tiers of gilded boxes, a frescoed ceiling, and the acoustic is still considered the best in the country. The box office posts the night’s programme the morning of.

The Punta Gorda peninsula runs south from the centre out into Jagua Bay, three kilometres of pastel clapboard houses on stilts, the malecón curving around the water on both sides. At the tip is the Palacio del Valle, a 1917 mudéjar fantasy commissioned by another sugar fortune, with Venetian-glass ceilings, Moorish arches, and a rooftop terrace that serves cocktails at sundown. Benny Moré — the Bárbaro del Ritmo, born an hour east in Santa Isabel de las Lajas in 1919 — grew up listening to the danzonete on this paseo.

What stays after Cienfuegos is the geometry. The French grid, the bay curve, the Tomás Terry’s symmetry, the colonnaded arcades on the parque. The city was planned in a way Havana never had to be, and the planning is visible in every block.

Chapter 04 · the story

Trinidad was founded by Diego Velázquez in 1514, the third town the Spanish laid in the New World. The plaque is on the wall of Iglesia de la Santísima. The cobblestones underfoot are the original ballast stones from sixteenth-century ships, laid by hand.

The plaque on Iglesia de la Santísima reads Fundada en 1514 por Don Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar — founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez, the Spanish conquistador who took the island for the crown. Trinidad was the third town he laid, after Baracoa and Bayamo, and it became the country’s third-richest city within a century on the back of the Valle de los Ingenios — the Valley of the Sugar Mills — where slave labour and African knowledge of cane processing made fortunes that built every facade on the Plaza Mayor.

The square is small. Iglesia de la Santísima on the north side, four palacios around the other three — the Brunet, the Cantero, the Ortiz, the Padrón — each now a museum of colonial domestic life, each with a courtyard, each with the wrought-iron grilles the slave foundries cast. The cobblestones underfoot are ballast stones the Spanish ships dumped in the harbour and the Africans carried up to pave the streets. UNESCO inscribed the whole town in 1988 and froze it; nothing has been built inside the casco histórico since.

At night the music starts on the steps next to the church. Casa de la Música is just the staircase — no roof, no stage — and the band sets up at the top, a sextet in white guayaberas, tres and trumpet and bongó and clave, working through son cubano standards from the 1920s. The audience sits on the steps with seven peso mojitos. When the band breaks down around midnight the crowd moves three blocks uphill to Disco Ayala, a cave dance club inside an actual limestone cavern, and the reggaetón takes over until dawn.

What stays after Trinidad is the layering. The 1514 plaque, the 1820s palacios, the African foundry grilles, the son sextet on the sixteenth-century steps. The town is doing something no other Cuban city does — holding five centuries in one square block, and charging a dollar to walk through it.

Santiago · the cradle of son

Chapter 05 · the story

Santiago is where son cubano was born in the 1890s and where the revolution started in 1953. The cathedral mountain is the Sierra Maestra, where Castro hid for two years. The cathedral music is on Heredia, where Compay Segundo worked.

Santiago de Cuba is the eastern capital, six hundred miles from Havana, closer to Haiti than to its own country’s centre, and the distance shows in everything. The Afro-Cuban heritage runs deeper — French planters fleeing the 1791 Haitian revolution brought enslaved and freed Africans here who built the Tivolí neighbourhood and the musical vocabulary that became son. Son cubano emerged in these streets in the 1890s, the marriage of Spanish guitar and African clave that became salsa, the mambo, everything that came after.

Casa de la Trova on Calle Heredia is the room where it happened. Compay Segundo worked the bandstand here in the 1940s and 50s before the Buena Vista Social Club rediscovered him in 1996. Eliades Ochoa still plays here when he is in town. The space is small — sixty seats, an open front to the street, a wood bar at the back — and the band rotates every two hours from noon until two in the morning. A peso for the trovador hat-pass after each set.

The revolution started here too. On 26 July 1953, a twenty-six-year-old lawyer named Fidel Castro led 165 armed insurgents in an attack on the Moncada Barracks on the city’s western edge. The attack failed; most of his men died; Castro was captured and tried and gave the courtroom speech that became La historia me absolverá. The movement that followed took its name from the date. The barracks is now a school and a museum, the bullet holes preserved in the facade.

What stays after Santiago is the cemetery. Santa Ifigenia holds José Martí’s tomb — the hexagonal mausoleum with the changing of the guard every thirty minutes — and three rows behind it, since November 2016, Fidel’s. A rough granite boulder, his name and nothing else. The two graves are sixty metres apart. The country the revolution remade still has to hold them both.
