Out of Hong Kong on a Wednesday, Havana by Thursday dusk. Dry season, cool nights at twenty-two, the hurricane months long past. Ten nights ahead along the spine of the island — son cubano in the courtyards of Habana Vieja, rumba guaguancó with batá drums in Callejón de Hamel, a finca porch in Viñales with a guajira trio and a mojito, danzón in the Tomás Terry opera house at Cienfuegos, the open-air steps at Casa de la Música in Trinidad, and Compay Segundo''s old stage at Casa de la Trova in Santiago de Cuba.

A breather west of the city. Mogotes the size of cathedrals, a tobacco-finca porch with a guajira trio, mojito sweating on the rail while the sun goes down the back of a karst.

Cienfuegos · the French city

A French-laid grid on a Caribbean bay. Caruso once sang at the Tomás Terry. Benny Moré — the Bárbaro del Ritmo — grew up an hour east, and Cienfuegos has not forgotten.

Final evening above the Plaza de Marte, Hotel Casa Granda''s rooftop still warm from the day, a trio working through Lágrimas Negras while the lights come on in the Sierra Maestra. Boniato airport by morning, José Martí by noon, Hong Kong by the day after. Ten nights — every one of them yours, the requinto solo on Chan Chan stopping a card game at the bar at three in the afternoon already half-remembered.
