Feb 27 · Day 1 · the first one

Wheels down at Las Américas. Then seven nights across Hispaniola.

Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Santo Domingo by Saturday evening — Cathay/American via Miami, twenty hours total. Seven nights ahead through the Dominican Republic (the second- largest Caribbean island after Cuba) — two in Santo Domingo for the UNESCO Zona Colonial (the oldest European settlement in the Americas, founded 1496), three in Punta Cana for the Caribbean beach week, two final nights in Samaná for the humpback whale migration (the only place to reliably see them in February-March in the Caribbean). February is the cusp — the dry-season peak in the Caribbean, daytime 27 °C, sea 25 °C, the humpback-whale season at peak (15,000 whales migrate to Samaná Bay Jan-Mar to breed + calve), and the all-inclusive Punta Cana resorts are at their best value before the March break.
