Seven nights ahead through the Dominican Republic (the second- largest Caribbean island after Cuba) — two in Santo Domingo for the UNESCO Zona Colonial (the oldest European settlement in the Americas, founded 1496), three in Punta Cana for the Caribbean beach week, two final nights in Samaná for the humpback whale migration (the only place to reliably see them in February-March in the Caribbean). Chapter 01 · the story

Every European cathedral in the Americas is a copy of one building, and that building is on Calle Arzobispo Meriño in Santo Domingo. The Catedral Primada was finished in 1541. The first of everything in the New World lives within ten blocks of it.

Calle Las Damas is the first paved European street in the Americas and the stones are still there. They are limestone, cut from a quarry across the Ozama river, and the carts that brought them in 1502 cut grooves in the kerb that have not been worn out by five hundred subsequent years of foot traffic. The street is named for the ladies of María de Toledo’s court — she was Diego Columbus’s wife, the niece of the Duke of Alba — who walked it in the evenings because there was nowhere else in the hemisphere to walk.

The Catedral Primada is open until six and the queue is never long. Inside, the nave is short by European standards and the ceiling is low, because in 1521 nobody on this side of the ocean knew yet how to build a Gothic vault and the masons were guessing. The empty marble sarcophagus where Columbus lay for four hundred years is in the south transept; the bones were shipped to Seville in 1898 when Spain lost the colony, or so Seville says. Santo Domingo says they took the wrong bones and the real ones are at the Faro a Colón across the river. Both cities are still arguing.

In the late afternoon Calle El Conde fills up. It is the pedestrianised spine of the colonial quarter and it ends at Parque Colón, where the statue of the admiral faces away from the cathedral he never lived to see finished. The colmados — the corner stores that double as bars — sell bottles of mamajuana, the rum-and-bark infusion the Taíno drank before Columbus and the Spanish drank afterwards. The bartender at one of them on Calle Hostos pours it warm, says it is good for the back and other things, and refuses to charge for the second glass.

What the Zona Colonial does, walking it slowly, is collapse a chronology. The first cathedral, the first hospital (San Nicolás de Bari, ruined now, the arches still standing on Calle Hostos), the first university (Santo Tomás de Aquino, 1538, a working campus still), the first fortress, the first paved street — they are all there, all within walking distance, and they are all from the first half of one century. Five hundred years compress into an afternoon.

Chapter 02 · the story

Bávaro is twenty-two kilometres of white sand and the resorts are lined up behind it like a single low wall, each one ending where the next begins. The beach is a commons. The coconut man with the machete will sell you one for two hundred pesos whichever gate you walked out of.

The all-inclusive arithmetic of Punta Cana is not what it looks like from outside. The resorts are wristband economies — yours is plastic, blue, sealed at the wrist on check-in, and it gets you food and drink and a beach chair and a towel anywhere on the property until the day you leave. The first afternoon is for calibrating: the buffet at one o’clock, the swim-up bar at three, the room service at midnight. By day two the wristband stops being something you notice. By day three you have stopped reaching for a wallet that is not in the swim shorts.

Outside the gates, the other Punta Cana starts. The road to Higüey runs west through sugarcane and the basilica there is the modern arch-and-spire concrete building from 1971 that the Dominican government chose over Gaudí’s older neo-Gothic original. The Hoyo Azul cenote sits inside Scape Park, a forty-minute drive inland from Bávaro, and the limestone wall around it drops seventy-five metres to water so blue it looks tinted. Swimming in it after the beach week is the swap that the trip needs — fresh water, no sun, no salt.

The Saona day-trip is the standard escape. The catamarans leave from Bayahibe at nine in the morning, motor for two hours along the Parque Nacional Cotubanamá coast to the natural pool — a sand shelf in the middle of the sea where the water is waist-deep and the starfish drift past your ankles — and then land at Mano Juan, the small fishing village on the island where the rum punch is free and the lunch is grilled chicken with rice and beans. The catamaran turns back at three. The boat is a party. The water between Mano Juan and the natural pool is the colour the brochure photographers spend a career chasing.

What Punta Cana does well, in the end, is to not ask anything of you. The colonial week is behind. The whale boats are ahead. Three days here is the breath in the middle — a beach a mile long, a wristband, a coconut, a cenote, a catamaran. The register is exactly what it advertises and there is no point pretending otherwise.

Chapter 03 · the story

Fifteen thousand humpback whales come to Samaná Bay every winter to give birth and to teach the calves to breathe. They have been doing it since before the bay had a name, and they do it only between January and March. This is the only window.

The boats leave the Samaná town harbour at nine and at one. The captain is a marine biologist from the Centro de Investigaciones de Biología Marina at the Universidad Autónoma, the licence is limited (only fourteen operators have one), and the rules are strict — no more than three boats on a single whale, two-hundred metre minimum, no swimming, engines down when the whales surface. The bay is shallow and warm and protected on three sides by the peninsula, which is why the females come here to calve. The Silver Bank, fifty miles further north, is where they mate.

Within thirty minutes of leaving the harbour the first blow comes up — a vertical spout of mist five metres tall, three seconds long, and then a slick back arcing forward in the water. A female. The calf is somewhere underneath. The captain cuts the engine and the boat drifts and the second blow is closer, and then the tail comes up — the flukes, ridged underneath in a pattern that is unique to each animal, the way fingerprints are unique — and the whale sounds and is gone for fifteen minutes. The next breach, if there is one, is the one the boat is now waiting for.

The El Limón waterfall is the afternoon. The trail starts at a village called Rancho Español, the horses are small and unhappy, and the path climbs through the rainforest for forty minutes before it drops into the gorge where the waterfall is. It is forty metres tall, the pool at the base is cold, and on a hot afternoon the swim is the point. The horses wait at the top with the boys from the village who own them. Five hundred pesos is the right tip.

Cayo Levantado is the last morning. It is the small island fifteen minutes by boat from the Samaná harbour and it is where Bacardi filmed the rum commercials in the seventies — hence the nickname, Isla Bacardi. The public beach on the western side is empty by noon because the day-trippers come at ten and leave at one. What stays after Samaná is not the waterfall or the island. It is the breath of the whale at three metres’ distance, the boat engine off, a calf surfacing once and then again on the seaward side, and the captain saying nothing because there is nothing to say.

Last mangú at Buen Provecho. Then the long flight east.
