Out of Hong Kong on a Thursday, Nadi by Friday morning — Fiji Airways direct over the equator. Austral winter ahead, the dry cool 26 °C trade-wind season at its best. Eight nights ahead on three island groups — one in Nadi as launchpad, two on the Mamanuca chain for the day-trip island reach, three further out on the Yasawa chain for the smaller villages and the Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves, and two on Taveuni (Vanua Levu''s smaller neighbour) for the rainforest and the diveable Rainbow Reef. Chapter 01 · the story

Sri Siva Subramaniya rises out of the sugar-cane plain in Tamil-Dravidian colour — the largest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere, half a world from Tamil Nadu, dropped onto an island that thinks of itself as Melanesian. Nadi is the seam.

The plane lands at NAN in the dark and the air outside the terminal is the kind of warm that has weight to it — humid, frangipani-thick, the smell of cane smoke from a burn somewhere inland. The man at immigration says bula and stamps the page without looking, and the taxi driver on the rank outside is a Fijian of Indian descent — Indo-Fijian, the term that does the work here — whose grandparents came over as indentured labourers in the 1880s to cut cane for the British. Nadi the town is mostly his community. Suva the capital is mostly the other.

The temple on the main road is the tell. Sri Siva Subramaniya is seven storeys of gopuram in chalk blue and apricot and Pondicherry yellow, the largest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere, built by people whose great-grandparents weren’t supposed to stay. Shoes off at the gate. The inner sanctum has Murugan on his peacock and the lingam is wreathed in marigold and there is a hand-bell hanging from a chain that you ring on the way past, the sound flat and small in the heat.

The Saturday market is two blocks back from the highway. Kokoda sits in styrofoam cups on a folding table — raw walu cured in lime and coconut cream and chilli, the Fijian ceviche — and behind it a woman is grilling tilapia over coconut husks for FJD 8. The man selling sulu wraparounds in the next stall asks which island, and when the answer is Mamanuca tomorrow he nods and says vinaka vakalevu and tucks a free length of cotton on top.

What stays after one night in Nadi is that the country starts twice over. The temple and the village. The cane and the reef. The ferry leaves at 8:45.

Two nights in the inner Mamanuca chain. Small palm-fringed islands a 1-hr ferry from Denarau, where Cast Away and Survivor filmed. Walk around any of them in 30 min.

Chapter 02 · the story

Monuriki is the island Tom Hanks lit a fire on. It is half a kilometre across, uninhabited, ringed by a sand collar so white it reads cinematic from the boat. The Mamanuca chain sells itself on this — twenty minutes from the marina to a place that looks like nowhere.

The South Sea Cruises catamaran leaves Denarau at 9 and does the chain in stops — Beachcomber, Treasure, Bounty, South Sea, Mana — dropping off ten people at each, the way a bus does the high street. The water shallows from indigo to turquoise to the colour of a pool tile at the last 200 metres, and the boatman cuts the engine and a tender comes out from the resort to lift the bags across the last stretch where the reef makes the catamaran nervous.

The islands themselves are register-shifters. They look like the default desktop wallpaper made flesh — palm-fringed, white-sand, ringed in coral — but the catch is the day-tripper rhythm. Mana fills at 11 with the Denarau crowd off the next ferry and empties at 3 when they all go back, and the in-between hours are loud with volleyball on the beach and karaoke from the bar. Stay till sundown and the chain becomes a different country: lanterns on the deck, the kava bowl coming out, the resort staff dropping the guest-service voice and switching to Fijian.

The kava ceremony is on a mat under a thatched roof, cross-legged, the tanoa bowl in the middle and the bilo — a coconut half sanded smooth — passed in turn. Low tide (one clap before), drink, high tide (three claps after), pass it on. The drink tastes of wet earth and numbs the lips on the second cup. The chief is a man in a sulu and a polo shirt who works in IT in Lautoka on weekdays.

Monuriki is twenty minutes by speedboat from Mana. The film crew left in 2000 and the island is a national park now — no overnight, pack out what you bring in. There is no Wilson. The volleyball is back at the resort.

Yasawa · the Blue Lagoon caves

Three nights deeper into the Yasawa chain. Smaller villages, fewer day-trippers, the Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves (the 1980 Blue Lagoon film location), manta-ray swim at Naviti.

Chapter 03 · the story

The inner chamber at Sawa-i-Lau is reached by a 1-metre underwater swim through a limestone gap, surfacing in a domed cave the colour of jade. The 1980 film took its name from this water. Three hours north of the marina, the day-trip boats stop coming.

The Yasawa Flyer leaves Denarau at 8:30 and climbs north for three hours, dropping off backpackers at each island in turn — Waya, Naviti, Nacula, Tavewa — until the chain runs out at Sawa-i-Lau and the boat turns around. The further north you go the smaller the resorts and the fewer the staff and the more you have to choose your moment to arrive, because every island runs on the tide chart and the boat captain reads it from the colour of the water at the reef break.

The sevusevu is the Yasawa entry. Before walking into a village you bring yaqona — kava root, bought in Nadi or at the resort shop, wrapped in newspaper — and present it to the turaga ni koro, the village headman, seated cross-legged on a pandanus mat. The shoulders stay covered. The knees stay covered. The visitor speaks first only to say bula vinaka and waits. The bundle goes down, the chief claps three times, says a few words in Bauan, and the village is open to you. Without it you are a tourist on a beach. With it you are a guest.

Sawa-i-Lau is at the top of the chain and it is the reason the chain is famous. The outer cave has daylight from a hole in the limestone roof and the water is fresh on the surface and salt underneath. The inner cave is reached by ducking under a rock shelf in a metre of water and surfacing on the other side. The guide goes first with a torch. The dome above the second pool is twenty metres up and the echo of a single hand-clap goes on for four seconds.

At Naviti the manta rays come into the channel between the motu from May to October to feed on the plankton in the current, and the boat drops you off at the upstream end and you drift over them. They are three metres across. They do not move out of the way.

Taveuni · Rainbow Reef

Two nights on the Garden Island. Bouma rainforest, the Rainbow Reef separated from Taveuni by the Somosomo Strait, and the 180° meridian running through Waiyevo (you can stand in two days at once).

Chapter 04 · the story

The 180th meridian runs through Waiyevo. There is a painted line on the lawn behind the old post office where one foot stands in today and the other in tomorrow — and Fiji has rerouted the date line around the island so the whole country agrees what day it is. Taveuni keeps the geometry.

The flight from NAN to Matei is 75 minutes in a Twin Otter and the plane banks once on the descent so the windows on the left show the rainforest running down the volcanic spine and the windows on the right show the Somosomo Strait separating Taveuni from Vanua Levu. The Strait is what the reef is in. The Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall — twenty kilometres of soft-coral drop-off in 30 metres of current-fed water — sit between the two islands like a fence the boats cross to dive.

Taveuni is the Garden Island and the name is literal. Volcanic soil, four metres of rainfall a year, the tagimoucia flower that grows only on the crater lake at 800 metres and nowhere else on earth. The Bouma trail at the north end runs three kilometres through the rainforest to the Tavoro waterfalls — three drops in a chain, the upper pool deep enough to swim, the rope swing tied to a tree on the bank by someone with a sense of humour. Bring shoes. The path is mud and root.

The village ovals on Sundays are rugby-mad. Taveuni runs on the sport — the Flying Fijians’ bench has been recruiting out of Somosomo for a generation — and the village ground at Naqara has a goal frame made of mangrove poles and a touchline marked in coral sand and a referee who is also the village teacher on weekdays. Spectators stand. Cans of Fiji Bitter cost FJD 5.

The painted line behind the old post office at Waiyevo is the quiet thing. Theoretically the 180th meridian. Theoretically the date change. In practice Fiji moved the date line east in 1879 so that Taveuni — and the rest of the country — stayed on one calendar. The line on the lawn is a souvenir of a geometry the country chose to ignore. Stand on it anyway. The dog asleep on the grass next to it is unimpressed.

Aug 7 · Day 9 · the last one

Last kokoda at the Nadi Saturday market. Then the flight home.

Final lunch at the Nadi Saturday market — a bowl of kokoda (raw walu fish + coconut milk + lime + onion + chili) at a market kitchen, baked Fijian tilapia on a banana leaf. Last bula T-shirt from a Nadi handicraft stall, taxi to Nadi Airport at dusk, Fiji Airways FJ391 north over the equator. Hong Kong by morning the day after. Eight nights — one on Viti Levu''s southwest, two on Mamanuca''s small day-trip islands, three on Yasawa''s rugged coral chain, two with Taveuni''s Rainbow Reef behind the eyeline. The kava and the lovo and the long bula greetings already half-remembered.
