South down the Pan-American Highway to Cotopaxi for two nights on a hacienda at the base of the 5,897-m volcano — wake at dawn for the snow-cap view, horse-ride or mountain-bike on the paramo grassland at 3,800 m, optional 4-hour climb up to the José Ribas refuge at 4,800 m. Continue south to Baños for two final nights at 1,800 m — the Ruta de las Cascadas with seven waterfalls including Pailón del Diablo (the Devil”s Cauldron), the Casa del Árbol tree-house swing-over-the-cliff, the local hot springs at La Virgen, the cable car over Río Pastaza, and the bus back to Quito for the long flight home.

Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Quito by Saturday morning via Madrid + Bogotá — KLM through AMS + Avianca via BOG, twenty-four hours all in. Eight nights ahead down Ecuador''s Avenue of the Volcanoes — three in Quito at 2,850 m for the UNESCO Old Town and the equator line at Mitad del Mundo, one in Otavalo for the Saturday Indigenous market, two on a Cotopaxi hacienda at the foot of the 5,897-m volcano, two final nights in Baños for the waterfall route and the cable car over Devil''s Cauldron. The Galapagos sit out this trip (separate trip needed); this is the mainland-Andean Ecuador that connects four Avenue-of-the-Volcanoes peaks above 5,000 m in a single 200-km north-south drive. Late-night transfer to UIO, KLM via Bogotá + Amsterdam back east. Hong Kong by Saturday afternoon. Eight nights — three in the Quito UNESCO Old Town, one in the Otavalo Indigenous market, two on the Cotopaxi paramo, two on the Baños waterfall route. The colour of the equator at noon and the cold of the high paramo already half-remembered.
