Chapter 01 · the story

A line of red paint runs four kilometres through the centre of Boston, from the Common to Bunker Hill, joining sixteen places where the Revolution actually happened. The trail is older than the country it started, and it still works as a map.

The red line begins at the visitor centre on Tremont Street and goes north, sometimes painted, sometimes laid in brick, crossing the Common at the foot of the State House where the gold dome was gilded over Bulfinch’s 1798 design with 23-carat leaf donated by Paul Revere’s copper company. The walk is 4.0 km if you do it end to end, and it takes a half day if you actually stop at the churches.

At the Old North Church on Salem Street the sexton hung two lanterns on the night of 18 April 1775 — one if by land, two if by sea — and the building is still a working Episcopal parish, pew rented by the same families. Across the harbour the USS Constitution is in the water she was launched into in 1797, a 44-gun frigate that still gets towed out to sea once a year to keep her commissioned. The Navy crew on board are active duty.

The Freedom Trail ends at Bunker Hill, where the colonists lost the battle and won the argument: don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes. The obelisk on top of the hill is 67 m of Quincy granite and the climb is 294 steps. From the top the city fans out — the North End below, the harbour to the east, the Charles to the west, the gold dome small and distant back where the line began.

What stays after Boston is the compactness of it. The country was argued into existence inside a square mile that you can walk across in an hour. The line of red paint is the city’s way of saying so, out loud, every day, to anyone who follows it.

Chapter 02 · the story

Vermont has more than a hundred covered bridges still standing, and the smallest state legislature in the country that votes on whether to keep them. The maple sap runs in March; the leaves turn in October. The schedule is not negotiable.

The drive north from the Massachusetts line follows the Connecticut River and then the White River and then the Ottauquechee, which carves the 50-metre slot of Quechee Gorge right next to Route 4 with a parking lot and a footbridge for people who want to look. Vermont’s nickname is the Green Mountain State and in October the name is briefly wrong: the hills go red and orange and yellow, sugar maple first, then beech and birch, the colour climbing south at roughly fifty kilometres a day.

The covered bridges are not for postcards. They were roofed because uncovered timber decks rotted in twenty winters and covered ones lasted a century. The Cornish-Windsor across the Connecticut River is 138 m, the longest in the country, two lanes, still carrying cars. The Taftsville on Route 4 was built in 1836 and is still standing because the town pays a small line in the budget every year for cedar shakes on the roof.

In Waterbury the Ben & Jerry’s factory tour costs five dollars and ends at a fenced-off grass plot called the Flavor Graveyard, where each retired flavour gets a headstone with a four-line poem. The Cabot cooperative thirty minutes north is owned by 750 dairy farms in New England and gives you a toothpick at the door for the cheddar wall. Both are tourist things and both are also true.

What stays after Vermont is the smallness. The legislature meets in a gold-domed statehouse in Montpelier, a town of 8,000, the smallest state capital in the country. The covered-bridge budget gets discussed by name. It is one of the few places left where the scale of the politics matches the scale of the landscape.

Chapter 03 · the story

The wind at the summit of Mount Washington once hit 372 km/h — a world record that stood for sixty-two years. The mountain is only 1,917 m. The weather observatory still measures it every minute, and the sign at the top reads worst weather in the world, and the sign means it.

The Kancamagus Highway climbs west out of Conway through 56 km of the White Mountain National Forest with no gas station and no cell service and seven overlooks numbered on the map. The road crosses the Swift River three times. The maples here turn a week later than Vermont’s because the elevation is higher and the nights colder, which is also why the wind on Mount Washington does what it does.

The Cog Railway leaves from Marshfield Base Station at 838 m and climbs to the summit on a rack-and-pinion track at an average gradient of 25 percent, with one section called Jacob’s Ladder at 37 percent — steep enough that the boiler had to be tilted in the locomotive design or the firebox would have dewatered on the climb. The railway opened in 1869, the first mountain cog in the world. The trip up takes 65 minutes. The summit is above treeline.

What happens at the top is meteorological. Mount Washington sits at the intersection of three storm tracks — the Atlantic, the Great Lakes, the Gulf — and the summit cone funnels the resulting wind into the gap between the Presidential Range peaks. On 12 April 1934 the observatory anemometer recorded 231 mph (372 km/h), the highest surface wind ever measured by a human, and the observatory was on shift through it. The cable was tied down with chains.

What stays after New Hampshire is the relationship between the small mountain and the big weather. The summit is half the height of Mont Blanc and the wind speed is twice. The state motto is Live Free or Die. The mountain is the unofficial second half of the sentence: and accept what the weather costs.

Chapter 04 · the story

Maine has 5,500 kilometres of coastline — more than California, on a state a fifth of the size — because the glaciers crushed the granite into a fractal of bays and headlands and 4,600 islands. The lobster boats go out before sunrise and the colour of the buoys says whose trap is whose.

The drive east from North Conway crosses the Saco River and the state line and the road widens onto the coastal plain where the pine gives way to oak and the air goes salt. Portland is on a peninsula sticking south into Casco Bay, with the Old Port at the tip — brick warehouses from the 1860s that survived the Great Fire of 1866 only because the wind shifted, and have been a working waterfront ever since. The cobblestones on Wharf Street are original. The lobster pounds at the end of Commercial Street are the same ones the boats unload into at dawn.

The lobster is the state’s argument with itself. The fishery is the most regulated in the country: minimum carapace size 83 mm, maximum 127 mm, no egg-bearing females, no traps in winter for some zones, V-notch on the tail of any breeding female caught and released. The rules are set by the lobstermen themselves, zone by zone, and the result is a stock that has been climbing for forty years against a Gulf of Maine warming faster than 99 percent of the world ocean. The buoys are colour-coded: every licensed lobsterman picks a pattern and registers it, and the colour on the buoy matches the colour on the boat.

Out at Portland Head Light, fifteen minutes south on Cape Elizabeth, the lighthouse has been on the same rock since 1791, commissioned by George Washington, and the fog signal still works. The lens is a third-order Fresnel. The light is automated now but the keeper’s house is a museum and the rocks below are the same ones the Annie C. Maguire hit on Christmas Eve 1886.

What stays after Maine is the working-coast quality. The lobster boats are not props. The buoy colours are a property register maintained by the people who haul the traps. The coastline is so long because the rock said so, eleven thousand years ago, and nobody has had the resources to straighten it since.
