Wheels down at JFK. Then the long week of the maples.

Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, into JFK by Friday afternoon (the day rewinds) — Cathay direct, sixteen hours through the arctic. Eight nights ahead between three bases — four in Midtown Manhattan for the museums and the matinees, two in Williamsburg for the Brooklyn side, and two final nights up the Hudson at Beacon for the Dia and the Storm King fall colour. Mid-October is the cusp: Manhattan''s honey-locusts and Brooklyn''s ginkgos a week early, the Hudson Valley''s maples and oaks at their very peak. Eight days walked, every subway turnstile beeped through, every Hudson Line departure scheduled to the minute on the printed timetable.
