Chapter 01 · the story

Vegas is not the trip. Vegas is the doorway the trip opens through — a neon vestibule at the bottom of the Mojave where the SUV gets picked up, the last cold-room shower happens, and the 11-day Grand Circle starts at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.

The desert begins at the city limit and the city pretends it doesn’t. Inside the casino floor the air is pumped to 20°C and smells of carpet and cold metal; outside the temperature in October is still 28°C at 9 p.m., and the Strip is a six-lane boulevard running through what was, ninety years ago, a railroad watering stop with one block of saloons. The Bellagio fountains fire to Sinatra every fifteen minutes from a lake that should not exist in the Mojave at all.

The math of the place is that water comes 400 km from the Colorado River through Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, both of which this trip drives past in the next two days. The fountains and the swimming pools and the misters at every cabana — all of it runs on the same river that has carved the canyon you are about to descend. The connection is rarely advertised on the Strip. It becomes hard to ignore by Page.

The In-N-Out off Tropicana is the last stop before sleep. A double-double animal-style, fries well-done, a chocolate shake; the menu has not changed in any meaningful way since 1948. The checker calls out the order number in a yellow cap and a white shirt and the meat is fresh, never frozen, which the company puts on the wall as a vow. Eat on the patio. The light over the parking lot is sodium-yellow and the desert behind it is already black.

The SUV is picked up at 7 a.m. tomorrow from the off-Strip rental row by Paradise Road. The route east climbs out of the basin onto the high Colorado Plateau and does not come back down for ten days. Sleep early. The doorway opens at sunrise.

Chapter 02 · the story

The canyon is 446 km long and 1,800 m deep and the first time you walk to the rim no photograph has prepared you. The scale refuses the eye. The brain reaches for a comparison, finds none, and goes quiet.

The South Rim sneaks up. You drive an hour through flat ponderosa pine forest from Williams, the road tilts up almost imperceptibly, and then there is a parking lot at Mather Point and a paved path and a railing — and on the far side of the railing the ground is gone. Not slope, not valley, not gorge. Gone. The other rim is 16 km away and 1,800 m below your eyes sits a green-brown thread that turns out to be the Colorado River, which cut all of this in five or six million years of patient water and rising plateau.

At sunrise the light walks down the cliff wall in colour bands — purple, then rose, then orange, then the full red — and the shadows in each side canyon move with it. The Yavapai Geology Museum has a glassed-in viewing room with rock samples and a timeline that explains the layers visible from the patio outside: Kaibab Limestone at the rim is 270 million years old, the Vishnu Schist at the bottom of the inner gorge is 1.8 billion. Each band is a different ocean or desert or river that once lived here.

Bright Angel Trail drops 300 m in the first two hours to 1.5 Mile Resthouse, and the climb back is a slow 600-step shuffle that takes nearly twice as long. The mule trains have right of way. The guide rule is to turn around well before you think you need to. The canyon punishes a misjudged descent with a helicopter bill, and the rangers will tell you, calmly, that more people die of dehydration here than of falls.

At sunset El Tovar serves a 1905 lodge dining room with white linen and a wall of glass facing the rim, and the canyon turns black-purple while the wine is poured. Mary Colter designed the buildings to look indigenous to the rim. They do. Eat slowly. Tomorrow is Page.

Chapter 03 · the story

The slot canyon is a corridor the width of a person, twenty metres tall, and at noon a shaft of light comes through the crack overhead and lands like a spotlight on the sandstone floor. The Navajo word for the place means the-place-where-the-water-runs-through-the-rocks.

Upper Antelope is on Navajo Nation land and access has been guided-only since 1997. The tour vehicle is a high-clearance pickup that bumps three kilometres up a dry wash bed at 30 km/h, and then the guide stops at a crack in a sandstone wall barely wide enough for one person. You walk in single file. The canyon ceiling is twenty metres above your head and the floor is fine red sand, soft, slightly damp. The walls are striated in long swooping curves where flash floods have polished the Navajo Sandstone for eleven thousand years.

At midday, in the right months, the sun is high enough to send a shaft straight down through one of the cracks. The guide tosses a handful of sand into the beam to make it visible. The column of light stands in the corridor for ninety seconds, then moves. Then the next one starts in the next chamber. The tour is choreographed around them. The guide knows every angle and every name — the eagle, the seahorse, the woman watching — and will hold up an iPhone with the camera settings already dialled in for the rock.

Outside Page, four kilometres south of town, Horseshoe Bend is a 270-degree meander where the Colorado River wraps back on itself 300 metres below an overlook. The walk in is fifteen minutes across slickrock; the drop is unfenced for most of its length. Arrive at sunrise — the bend faces east and at dawn the water glows turquoise against the rust-red wall.

In the evening, on a Page corner stand, a Diné cook fries fry-bread to order — flour, salt, water, lard, stretched and dropped into hot oil — and tops it with pinto beans and ground beef and shredded iceberg lettuce. The bread is a twentieth-century invention from the forced relocation; the history rides with the meal. Eat it on a plastic chair under the sodium light. The dam holds back the lake behind you.

Chapter 04 · the story

Bryce is not a canyon. It is an amphitheatre — a half-bowl eroded into the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau at 2,400 m, its floor pillared with thousands of orange limestone hoodoos standing in ranks like a stone congregation waiting for the sermon to start.

The Paiute name for the hoodoos translates as legend people who were turned to stone. The geologist’s name for them is frost wedging — water gets into a crack, freezes overnight at 2,500 m, expands nine percent, splits the rock; repeats for ten million years. The Claron Formation is pink limestone laid down at the bottom of a lake fifty-five million years ago, and Bryce has the highest concentration of these spires on Earth.

At Sunrise Point at dawn the rim is lined with photographers and silent retired couples in fleece jackets. The temperature in October is below freezing at first light. Then the sun comes over the eastern ridge and the whole amphitheatre lights orange from the top down. The shadow line walks down the columns minute by minute. The hoodoos at the front catch first; the ones in the back stay grey-blue. The transition takes about twenty minutes and then it is done. A raven calls.

The Navajo Loop drops you between them. The trail switchbacks down through Wall Street — a slot in the limestone where two fir trees grow improbably tall in a stripe of light — and at the bottom the spires rise on either side like a cathedral nave. The climb back up the Queen’s Garden side is gentler, longer, and goes past Queen Victoria herself, a hoodoo that unmistakably has her crown and chin and the line of her dress.

After sunset, with the parking-lot lights off, Bryce is one of the darkest skies in the lower forty-eight. The Milky Way is a ribbon overhead and the Andromeda Galaxy is visible to the naked eye at 2.5 million light-years. The hoodoos below stay ghost-pale in the starlight. The park hosts an annual Astronomy Festival in June. In October the sky is just as good and the rim has gone quiet.

Chapter 05 · the story

The Narrows is the river. You hike up the river itself, waist-deep where the canyon pinches to four metres across and the walls climb 600 metres on either side, the only path being the one the Virgin River carves and re-carves with every summer flood.

The Virgin River drops 25 metres for every kilometre it runs — one of the steepest river gradients in North America — and the work it has done over the last million years is a slot canyon in red Navajo Sandstone that you cannot enter from above. The only way in is to walk upstream from the Temple of Sinawava where the paved Riverside Walk ends and the river is the trail.

The water in October is 12°C and shin-to-thigh deep depending on which bend you are crossing. The outfitter on Zion Park Boulevard rents dry-suit bibs, neoprene socks, canyoneering boots and a wooden walking stick for grip on the smooth river cobbles. The bottom is slick and the current is firm. You take short, planted steps and watch the canyon walls climb. Two hours in, at the spot known as Wall Street, the canyon narrows to four metres across and the walls go vertical for six hundred. Sunlight enters as a slot of sky overhead. The acoustics flatten. The air is twelve degrees cooler than at the trailhead.

Angels Landing is the other Zion. A 450-metre climb up switchbacks called Walter’s Wiggles, then a half-kilometre spine of rock no wider than the path itself with sheer drops on either side and a chain bolted into the sandstone to grip. Twenty people have died here since 2000. The permit lottery exists for a reason. Without the permit, Scout Lookout — the last point before the chains — is the safer eighty percent of the view.

The canyon shuttle has banned private cars since 2000 and the silence in the canyon is part of why Zion still feels like itself. The buses run every ten minutes from the visitor centre to the trailheads. In October the cottonwoods along the river have turned gold. The river is still running.

Chapter 06 · the story

Arches holds more than two thousand catalogued natural sandstone arches in a single park — the densest concentration on Earth — and the one on the Utah license plate, Delicate Arch, stands free on its slickrock bowl at sunset, sixteen metres tall, lit gold then red then violet.

Salt did the work. Three hundred million years ago an inland sea evaporated and left a kilometre-thick salt bed under what is now Moab. The salt deforms under pressure, lifts and fractures the Entrada Sandstone above it, and water and frost do the rest. Fins of rock become walls. Walls become windows. Windows fall. What is left is the inventory the park rangers catalogue: 2,000+ arches, anything with an opening at least one metre across counted in. The smallest is 90 cm. The biggest, Landscape Arch, spans 88 metres and is currently shedding.

The Delicate Arch hike is 4.8 km return on slickrock, with the last kilometre traversing a sloped rib of sandstone that has been polished by boots into a hard road. The arch is not visible until the very last bend. Then it is there, standing on the rim of a natural sandstone bowl, framing the La Sal Mountains behind it. At sunset, the western light hits the underside of the span and the whole arch glows — first gold, then orange, then the deep red the postcards have promised. A hundred people sit around the bowl in silence. No one talks through the last fifteen minutes.

Canyonlands is the other half of the Moab equation — Island in the Sky, a mesa two thousand feet above the confluence of the Colorado and the Green, with overlooks at Grand View Point and the Green River Overlook that look down into a country of side canyons that no one walks through. The Island is forty minutes from Moab. Even a half-day there explains why Edward Abbey wrote what he wrote.

Back in town the Moab Brewery does a green-chile cheeseburger with house-brewed Dead Horse Ale on tap, and on a clear October night the parking lot is dark enough to see Saturn unaided. Arches is an International Dark Sky Park. The sky overhead is the show.

Sedona · Cathedral Rock

One last night at the red-rock end. Drive south through Monument Valley (or shortcut via Flagstaff), end the trip at Cathedral Rock at sunset, fly out of Phoenix tomorrow.

Sedona sells itself on the vortex — four named sites where the desert is supposed to concentrate spiritual energy and turn juniper trunks into helixes — and whether that is true or marketing, the red rock spires really do glow against the cobalt sky and the trip ends here for a reason.

The Schnebly Hill Formation is the red sandstone that gives Sedona its colour: iron oxide cementing the grains, 280 million years of weather doing the carving. The four named vortex sites — Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Boynton Canyon, Airport Mesa — were assembled into a spiritual map by a psychic named Page Bryant in 1980 and the town has run on it ever since. The juniper trees near the sites do grow in unusual twisted spirals; geologists attribute this to soil and wind, and practitioners attribute it to the field. Both explanations are welcome at the trailhead.

Cathedral Rock at sunset is the closing image of the trip. The trail is short — a kilometre and a quarter each way — but the last third is a hands-and-knees scramble up a sandstone chute between two of the spires. The view at the top opens west over Oak Creek and the entire valley turns red as the sun drops. A dozen people sit on the rim and watch the light walk up the opposite cliff face and disappear. No one wants to start back down.

Tlaquepaque is the other Sedona — a 1970s arts village built in Mexican-colonial style under sycamore shade trees on the banks of Oak Creek, the only place in town with old growth canopy and the only place that feels low-altitude. The galleries are good for last-day souvenirs. The Elote Cafe across the highway does an elote en la calle with Cotija and lime and a chile rub that closes the trip the way it should be closed.

Phoenix Sky Harbor is two hours south on Hwy 89A through Oak Creek Canyon and then I-17 down off the Mogollon Rim. The Colorado Plateau ends at the rim and the SUV drops two kilometres in altitude on the way to the airport. The red rock disappears in the rearview. The flight is at 22:30.

Last Cathedral Rock at sunset in Sedona. Then the flight home.
