Zimbabwe · the Smoke That Thunders
Eight nights through Zimbabwe in peak dry season · solo · domestic flights + private safari operator, no rental car. Two nights at Victoria Falls — guided rainforest walk on the Zimbabwe side (the view of the falls is better from Zambia, but the activities are all on the Zimbabwe side), helicopter “Flight of Angels” over the falls, sunset Zambezi cruise from Victoria Falls Hotel, Devil”s Pool from the Zambian side (Aug-Jan only, NOT June), bungee jump from Victoria Falls Bridge, evening at the Boma traditional restaurant. Fly south to Hwange National Park for three nights at a Main Camp lodge — game drives twice daily at dawn + sunset for the 40,000-elephant herds (the largest in Africa), the lion prides, the painted dogs (African wild dog, endangered, Hwange is the stronghold), buffalo, kudu, sable antelope, the Painted Dog Conservation Centre at Hwange. Fly northeast to Mana Pools for two nights — walking-safari country (one of the few African parks where you walk close to lion + elephant on foot with armed ranger), canoe on the Zambezi for the hippo + croc + carmine bee-eater colonies, the Lower Zambezi escarpment view. Fly south to Masvingo for one final night at Great Zimbabwe UNESCO ruins — the 11th-15th-century Shona kingdom”s capital, the Great Enclosure stone walls (largest pre-colonial structure in sub-Saharan Africa), Conical Tower, the namesake Bird of Zimbabwe soapstone carvings — before the drive back to Harare for the long flight home.
Wheels down at VFA. Then eight nights through the Zambezi south.
Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Johannesburg by Saturday morning, Victoria Falls by Saturday afternoon — Cathay + SAA, eighteen hours via JNB. Eight nights ahead through Zimbabwe — two at Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the Smoke that Thunders," at 1.7 km wide the largest curtain of falling water on Earth), three at Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe''s largest, home to 40,000 elephants), two at Mana Pools National Park (the only park where walking safari is the norm, on the edge of the Zambezi flood plain), one final night at Great Zimbabwe (UNESCO medieval Shona kingdom ruins) before the long flight home. June is the cusp — peak dry season, daytime 25 °C, nights cold (4 °C), no rain, animals concentrated at permanent waterholes, the Falls still in full flow from the March-April rains upriver in Angola.
