Chapter 01 · the story

From the Zimbabwe side the falls are not a place you visit, they are a wall of water you stand opposite. The Knife-Edge Bridge spray reaches you across the gorge as weather, soaking the rainforest path while the cliff stays dry. The Zambia side gives you the edge; this side gives you the whole frontage.

The path from the entrance gate runs along the cliff opposite the curtain, sixteen viewpoints spaced along 1.7 kilometres of escarpment. The first viewpoint is the Devil’s Cataract and the last is Eastern Cataract, and between them the river is doing something that no still photograph has ever quite caught: 1,088 cubic metres per second falling 108 metres into a basalt slot so narrow that the spray has nowhere to go but back up.

The spray rises six hundred metres on a good day. You see it from the plane before you see the river. The locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya — the smoke that thunders — and the name is diagnostic. The smoke is permanent; the thunder is felt as much as heard, a low pressure in the chest at viewpoint six where the path crosses the Knife-Edge footbridge and the wind off the falls delivers a sustained horizontal rain that does not stop for the length of the crossing. The poncho the gate sold you for two dollars is not adequate; the camera in a plastic bag is barely adequate; the joy of it is total.

The Zambia side, across the bridge, gives you Devil’s Pool — the swim at the lip, the photograph at the edge of the drop. That is its register: vertigo, intimacy, the trick of leaning over the abyss. The Zimbabwe side gives you the opposite register entirely. You are standing back at full-frontal-view distance, with the curtain in front of you wall-to-wall, and the geometry of the basalt is finally legible: how the river bends, how the gorge turns ninety degrees at the Boiling Pot, how the bridge below threads through the canyon at 128 metres above the water.

What stays is the noise. The rainforest path keeps a permanent microclimate — ferns, vervet monkeys, a fine constant drizzle on the leaf canopy — fed entirely by the falls themselves. You walk back to the gate damp through and grinning, and the sound follows you out into the car park, into the taxi, halfway into town, fading by degrees but never quite gone.

Chapter 02 · the story

Hwange holds forty thousand elephants — the largest population of any park in Zimbabwe and one of the densest concentrations left on the continent. At Nyamandlovu Pan in the dry season they come in by the hundred at dusk, moving in family lines, and the dust they raise sits in the air for an hour after they leave.

The park has no natural surface water for most of the year. The elephants are here because of sixty-odd diesel-pumped boreholes, maintained by a consortium of lodges and a charity called the Bhejane Trust, that keep the pans topped up through the dry months. June is dry — the rains finished in March, the next ones arrive in November — and so the pans have become the only show in town. The herds time their movement around them. The vehicles park back from the rim and the radios go quiet.

A bull elephant drinks two hundred litres at a sitting. A breeding herd of forty animals, which is the usual size at Nyamandlovu in the late afternoon, gets through eight thousand. The pump on the far side of the pan runs on a generator that the camp manager trucks fuel out to every Wednesday. The fact of the herds is contingent on this. Take the diesel away and the population collapses in a season — the 2013 cyanide poisonings at Pelandaba killed three hundred elephants and forced the trust to rebuild the entire borehole network from scratch.

What you watch at the rim of the pan is not wilderness in the romantic sense. It is the result of an active, expensive, human-tended intervention — one of the more functional examples on the continent of what conservation actually costs, animal by animal, litre by litre. The matriarch comes in first, walks the perimeter, drinks. The juveniles follow. The bulls hold back at the treeline until the herd is settled, then come in alone.

At sunset the light flattens to copper and the dust hangs at elephant-shoulder height. The painted dogs Lycaon pictus that the conservation centre tracks in the northern sector — 800 animals in 17 packs, the global stronghold — come through here too, but not on schedule. You see them or you don’t. The elephants, on a June evening at Nyamandlovu, you see.

Chapter 03 · the story

Mana Pools is the African park that lets you out of the vehicle. Walking with an armed ranger at dawn, paddling the Zambezi floodplain by canoe in the afternoon — the rules are looser here than anywhere else on the continent, and the wildlife knows it. Mana means four — four pools, an old river bend.

The floodplain at Mana is the leftover of an old Zambezi meander — a strip of mahogany and acacia woodland a few kilometres wide between the river and the Zambian escarpment. Cathedral fig trees, fifteen metres across at the trunk, drop a constant rain of seedpods that elephant and impala come in for at dusk. The light filters down through the canopy in a way the rest of the African bush does not allow; the ranger calls it the albida glow, after the winter-thorn acacia that defines the woodland. The result is that the animals here are visible against a soft, mottled, almost European background — not the open savannah of Hwange or the dense miombo of Mana’s hinterland.

You walk at six in the morning, single file, the ranger in front with a .458 rifle that he hopes not to load. The rules are stricter than they sound: no talking above a murmur, no sudden movement, hand-signals only for stop and freeze. An elephant at twenty metres is a routine encounter and you stand still until he moves off. The bull called Boss, who learned to balance on his hind legs to reach the higher acacia pods, is the famous one — the BBC filmed him for Dynasties — and his lineage still works the same trees.

The canoe trip in the afternoon is the other half of the deal. A fibreglass two-seater, paddles, a guide in the stern who knows which hippo pods to avoid. The Zambezi here is wide and slow and shallow; the channel braids around sandbars where crocodiles haul out to thermoregulate. You stay close to the bank — never between a hippo and deep water — and the kilometres pass in a slow sun-warm trance interrupted by the carmine bee-eaters flashing red along the cliffs and the buffalo herds coming down to drink.

What stays from Mana is the change in posture. After two days on foot and on the water, climbing back into a Land Cruiser at Nyamepi airstrip feels like getting back into an armour. The vehicle is how the rest of Africa is seen; Mana is the place that briefly remembers another way.

Chapter 04 · the story

A medieval African capital of eighteen thousand people, trading gold and ivory to Kilwa and Chinese porcelain back inland, built from mortarless granite blocks between 1100 and 1450. The country took its name from the ruin. The largest stone structure in sub-Saharan Africa is named after the place it stands.

The word zimbabwe in Shona means house of stone. There are several hundred such ruins scattered across the Zimbabwean plateau, but this is the one that gave the country its name — the largest, the oldest of the great phase, the one that ran the trade. At its height the capital held eighteen thousand people and controlled an export economy that reached the Swahili coast at Sofala and Kilwa, sending gold and ivory east in exchange for glass beads from Persia and celadon porcelain from Song-dynasty China. The site museum still has the porcelain shards.

The Great Enclosure is the largest single ancient structure in sub-Saharan Africa. Two hundred and fifty metres of curving wall, eleven metres tall at the highest course, five metres thick at the base, dressed granite blocks fitted without mortar — the chevron-pattern band along the top course is purely decorative, which is itself a statement about whoever was paying for the labour. Inside, the Conical Tower stands eleven metres of solid masonry, no opening, no internal chamber, purpose still unknown. The current best guess is that it is a granary symbol, a stone metaphor for royal wealth in stored grain.

The Hill Complex above is older. You climb a narrow stone-cut staircase between two granite kopjes — the same staircase the king’s wives climbed — and emerge on a balcony of rock where the royal residence was. From here the eight soapstone birds were taken in the 1890s by Cecil Rhodes’ agents; five have since returned to the country, three are still abroad. The birds are on the national flag.

The colonial-era refusal to accept that Africans had built this — the Rhodes-era theory that it was Phoenician or Sabaean, anything but Shona — persisted in academic circles into the 1970s. The last thing the place asks, standing in the Great Enclosure at sundown with the granite still warm, is who gets to write whose history. The answer the country chose, at independence in 1980, was to take its name from the ruin and put the bird on the flag.
