East Africa · the Great Migration

Eleven nights working the migration route through northern Tanzania and into Kenya · solo · August, the dry-season peak. Land at JRO, one night in Arusha under Mt Meru. Two nights at Tarangire among the baobabs and the largest elephant herds in Tanzania. A night on the rim of Ngorongoro, down into the caldera at first light for the black rhino and the densest lion population on earth. Four nights at Kogatende on the Mara River — the crossings, the crocodiles, the black-maned lions of the north Serengeti. Across the Sand River into Kenya for the last three nights in the Mara Triangle, a balloon over the savanna, a Maasai homestead visit, and out from Wilson on the long flight home.

Aug 15 · Day 1 · the first one

Wheels down at Kilimanjaro. Then the dust road north.

August on the Mara. Out of Hong Kong via Addis, into JRO at dusk — Meru in cloud, the smell of damp acacia rising off the laterite as the sun drops. Eleven nights ahead working north toward the river: Tarangire's baobabs, the rim of Ngorongoro, four nights at Kogatende waiting for 1.5 million wildebeest to find the courage to step into the Mara, then over the Sand River into Kenya for the last three. Polepole. The river will cross when it crosses.

Tarangire baobabs

The baobab park. In August the Tarangire River is the only water for fifty kilometres, and every elephant in the ecosystem knows it.
2 nights
Road Arusha → Tarangire main gate · 2.5 hr south-west on the A104

Things to do

  • Vervet monkeys at the lodge · keep the tent zipped, the sugar bowl covered
  • Sundowner G&T on a kopje · the dust hanging gold in the last light

activity Full-day private game drive · packed lunch in the bush pending
activity Off-vehicle walking safari with armed ranger pending

Chapter 03 · Aug 18 Day 4

Ngorongoro · into the caldera

A two-million-year-old caldera, 600 m deep, 260 km² wide. Twenty-five thousand large animals living inside the walls. Down at first light, out before the buses arrive.
1 night
Road Tarangire → Mto wa Mbu → Ngorongoro gate · 3 hr via the Rift escarpment
Altitude rim camp at 2,300 m · pack a fleece, it falls below freezing in tents

  • Lerai Forest · the yellow-bark fever trees, elephant bulls with metre-long tusks
  • Black rhino scan across the Gorigor Swamp · the resident pair, on a good morning
  • Sundowner on the rim · the caldera filling with cloud as the temperature drops

activity Olduvai Gorge detour on the way north pending

  • Balloon over the Mara at dawn · champagne-and-bacon breakfast on the savanna afterwards
  • Black-maned lion prides on the Bologonja kopjes · the heaviest cats in the ecosystem
  • Cheetah on the short-grass plains · solo males, mid-morning, the perfect light
  • Dinner at the camp fire under the southern stars · the cook serves samaki wa kupaka and chapati
Mobile camps are unfenced; an askari with a torch walks you to the tent after dinner — the low cough of a lion at three in the morning a hundred metres off is normal, do not unzip

Aug 26 · Day 12 · the last one

Last balloon at dawn. Then the long flight south.

Final morning lifting off the Mara at first light — the basket skimming the heads of giraffe, the shadow of the envelope racing a herd of zebra across the plain. Champagne and bacon on a folding table in the long grass. Wilson by mid-afternoon, Nairobi to Addis to Hong Kong by the night after. Eleven nights — the smell of dust and woodsmoke already half-remembered, the low cough of a lion at three in the morning still in the bones.
