Belize · the Blue Hole and the Mayan week
Seven nights through Belize at the dry-season cusp · solo · water taxi + Cessna + rental car, no rental car needed for the islands. Three nights on Caye Caulker — a 5-mile-long fishing island with no cars, only golf carts + bikes, “Go Slow” being the literal town motto, snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve (Belize Barrier Reef, UNESCO, second-largest on Earth) for nurse sharks + spotted eagle rays at Shark Ray Alley, kite-surf at the windward end. Blue Hole day-trip optional (3-hour boat or 30-min Cessna over the 1,000-foot-wide circular sinkhole that became the Cousteau-discovered icon of Belize, a UNESCO World Heritage site that needs 30 m visibility to be worth the price tag). Fly + drive west to the Cayo District for three nights at a jungle lodge — Mayan ruins at Xunantunich (the 130-ft El Castillo pyramid at the Guatemalan border), Cahal Pech, Caracol (the largest Maya site in Belize, 3-hour drive into the Pine Ridge forest), the Actun Tunichil Muknal “ATM” cave (swim into a Mayan sacrificial site, sealed since 900 AD, with 14 intact skeletons including the “Crystal Maiden”), howler-monkey walks at the Black Rock River, Big Rock Falls swim. Drive back + ferry to Caye Caulker for one final reef morning before the long flight home.
Wheels down at BZE. Then seven nights between reef and jungle.
Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Houston by Saturday morning, Belize City by Saturday afternoon — Cathay + United, eighteen hours all in. Seven nights ahead in Central America''s smallest English-speaking country — three nights on Caye Caulker in the laid-back fishing-island side of the Belize Barrier Reef (UNESCO, the second-largest reef on Earth), three nights at a Cayo jungle lodge for the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich and Caracol + the ATM "Actun Tunichil Muknal" cave + the howler-monkey-haunted Pine Ridge forest, one final night back in Caye Caulker for the closing reef dive. February is the cusp — Caribbean dry season, daytime 28 °C, water 24 °C, no rain, the Mayan-ruin temperatures bearable enough to climb the pyramids and the reef visibility at 30 m. The country motto is "Go Slow" — the Caye Caulker speed limit is golf-cart, and nobody bothers to enforce it.
