Uruguay · the Río de la Plata

Six nights through Uruguay at the summer cusp · solo · rental car from Montevideo. Two nights in Montevideo — the Ciudad Vieja old town (the colonial-era core), Mercado del Puerto (the old port market turned parrilla-grill restaurant complex), Plaza Independencia + the Palacio Salvo (the 1928 27-floor Art Deco tower), Solis Theatre (1856 Italian-style opera house), Pocitos Beach, the Rambla coastal walk (22 km along the Río de la Plata), Tannat wine + chivito sandwich + dulce de leche. Ferry across the Río de la Plata to Colonia del Sacramento UNESCO for one night — the 1680 Portuguese-founded town with the cobblestone streets + Bastión del Carmen + the lighthouse + the Plaza Mayor. Drive east 2.5 hr to Punta del Este for two nights — the “St Tropez of South America” beach scene, Casa Pueblo (the surreal sculpted-plaster building by Carlos Páez Vilaró), La Mano sculpture in the sand, Punta del Este Marina, day-trip to José Ignacio (the quieter alternative). Drive north to Cabo Polonio for one final night — the bohemian sea-lion-colony lighthouse village, only accessible by 4WD over the dunes, no electricity, no cell signal, the most stargazing- optimised location in Uruguay, before the drive back to Carrasco airport for the long flight home.

Wheels down at Carrasco. Then six nights down the South Atlantic.

Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Montevideo by Saturday evening — Cathay/LATAM via Buenos Aires, twenty-five hours total. Six nights ahead through Uruguay (the second-smallest country in South America, but possibly the most stable + progressive) — two in Montevideo for the Río de la Plata capital and the Ciudad Vieja old town, one in Colonia del Sacramento UNESCO across the river from Buenos Aires, two in Punta del Este for the South Atlantic beach scene, one final night up at Cabo Polonio for the lighthouse + sea-lion colony. February is the cusp — southern-hemisphere summer at peak, daytime 27 °C, sea 22 °C, the post-Carnival quiet (Carnival ends mid-February), and Punta del Este''s sky-high January peak prices have finally dropped.
