Chapter 01 · the story

Montevideo is the capital that forgot to get loud. Half the country lives here and most of them seem to be walking the Rambla with a mate gourd in one hand and a thermos under the arm, watching the same flat brown river the Spanish saw in 1726.

The flight in from Buenos Aires takes forty minutes across the Río de la Plata, which is not a river so much as a brown inland sea so wide the opposite shore disappears into haze. Ciudad Vieja starts at the port and ends at Plaza Independencia, fifteen blocks of flaking Beaux-Arts and 1920s Art Deco that the city has chosen not to scrub clean. Palacio Salvo, finished in 1928, was briefly the tallest building in South America and still looks like a Gothic cathedral that ate a wedding cake.

Inside Mercado del Puerto the wrought-iron 1868 hall smells of oak smoke and beef fat. The parrillas line both long walls and the grilling happens in the open — whole ribs, sausages, sweet breads, kidneys, the chivito sandwich that is the national obsession — and the waiter pours Tannat from Canelones into a short tumbler without asking. The bill arrives in Uruguayan pesos and the change is always wrong by a few coins in the customer’s favour, which is the local rounding convention.

The Rambla begins at the port and runs twenty-two kilometres east along the river. Pocitos beach is the curved sandy hinge where it turns into a residential city — apartment blocks behind a long arc of sand, palm trees, a single curving promenade. On Sunday afternoons the locals come down with mate gourds and thermoses of hot water and sit on the seawall for hours. The drinking is communal and unhurried; passing the gourd is the conversation.

What the city offers is not spectacle but a measured, slightly melancholy civility — the opera house still working after 170 years, the cafés that close at midnight not 2am, the fact that no one tries to sell anything on the street. It is the calmest capital on the continent.

Chapter 02 · the story

Colonia changed hands between the Portuguese and the Spanish seven times in its first hundred years. The cobbles still show it — Portuguese blocks tilted to drain to the centre, Spanish blocks tilted to drain to the sides — and Buenos Aires sits one hour across the water, watching.

The town was founded in 1680 by Manuel Lobo of Portugal, on the north bank of the Río de la Plata, directly opposite the Spanish settlement at Buenos Aires. The Spanish thought this was provocation, which it was. Colonia was besieged, traded, sacked, ceded by treaty, re-taken, re-ceded, and finally handed to Spain in 1777 — by which point the Old Town had been built and rebuilt in two architectural grammars at once.

The drainage channels are the giveaway. The Portuguese laid their cobbled streets with a centre gutter, water draining down the middle. The Spanish, who came later and rebuilt over the bones, laid theirs with gutters on both sides, water running along the walls. The two systems still alternate from Plaza Mayor west toward the lighthouse, and the locals will point them out without being asked.

Calle de los Suspiros — the Street of Sighs — is fifty metres of seventeenth-century stones running down to the water. The name is either about condemned prisoners walking to the river to drown (Portuguese version) or about lovers leaning out of upper windows (Spanish version), and the guides will tell whichever story the group seems to prefer. The lighthouse next door, built in 1857 on the ruins of a 1683 Franciscan convent, climbs thirty metres to a platform that looks straight across the brown estuary toward the Buenos Aires skyline, faint on a clear afternoon.

The Buquebus ferry from the Colonia terminal reaches Puerto Madero in just under an hour. Day-trippers from Argentina arrive at 10am with cameras and leave on the 6pm boat; what stays after dark is a quieter town of two thousand people, a few candle-lit restaurants on Calle del Comercio, and the sound of the river against the seawall. The bullring at Real de San Carlos is a 1910 ruin in a field outside town — built for a sport that Uruguay banned two years later, and never used again.

Chapter 03 · the story

Five concrete fingers rise out of the sand at Playa Brava. The locals call it La Mano. For two months every summer the population of Punta del Este multiplies by ten as Buenos Aires empties itself across the estuary, and the hand is the spot where every photo gets taken.

The drive east from Montevideo follows the Interbalnearia, four lanes of motorway between scrubland and Atlantic dune. The first sign that the resort coast has begun is Casa Pueblo, the white sculpted plaster house Carlos Páez Vilaró built into the cliffs at Punta Ballena from 1958 onwards. It has no straight lines. Páez Vilaró kept adding rooms until he died in 2014; the building still looks unfinished because, in a real sense, it never was.

La Mano, the five concrete fingers emerging from Playa Brava, was made by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal in five days in February 1982 for an open-air art competition. It won, the city kept it, and within a decade it had become the visual shorthand for the whole peninsula — a hand drowning, or a hand waving, depending on which interview Irarrázabal had given that year. He has since made versions in Madrid, the Atacama, and a beach in Venice. The Punta del Este one is the original.

In February the Argentine licence plates outnumber the Uruguayan on the avenida. The high-rise apartments along Playa Mansa fill with Buenos Aires families who keep beach-club memberships year to year; the seafood restaurants on the marina double their prices and triple their staff. The yachts in the harbour are Argentine-flagged. The currency at the beach kiosks is the Argentine peso, the Uruguayan peso, US dollars, or any combination — the change comes back in whichever the kiosk has most of.

Forty kilometres east, José Ignacio is the quieter, richer alternative: a fishing village of two hundred year-round residents that fills, in summer, with low-rise design hotels and the people who can afford to skip the high-rise version. Further on at Cabo Polonio the road simply ends. The way in is a forty-minute 4WD ride across open dunes to a village without electricity or pavement, where seven hundred sea lions sleep on the rocks below the 1881 lighthouse and the only night light comes from candles and the beam turning slowly overhead.

Final lunch at La Pasiva in Montevideo's Pocitos — chivito (the Uruguayan national sandwich of steak + ham + cheese + egg + bacon + lettuce + tomato on a milanesa bun), Tannat red wine. Taxi to Carrasco airport at midnight, LATAM via Buenos Aires east + Cathay to Hong Kong. Six nights — two in Montevideo, one at Colonia del Sacramento UNESCO, two on the Punta del Este beach scene, one at the Cabo Polonio lighthouse.
