Three nights in Rio for ensaios técnicos at the Sambódromo, a Saturday at Mangueira”s quadra with 250 surdos pounding the pink-and-green floor, and a Monday roda at Pedra do Sal. One night south down the Costa Verde to Paraty for cobblestones, cachaça at Engenho d”Ouro, and Banana da Terra. A flight north to three nights in Salvador”s Pelourinho — Olodum on Tuesday, Ilê Aiyê at Curuzu, capoeira-de-Angola at Forte de Santo Antônio, a respectful afternoon at the Casa Branca terreiro, moqueca and acarajé from Cira at Largo da Mariquita. Two nights between Recife and Olinda for frevo passistas with their tiny umbrellas, a Saturday night with Estrela Brilhante”s alfaia drums, and the Bonecos Gigantes still walking the Olinda hills on Sunday. Out through two nights in São Paulo for Sala São Paulo, choro Mondays at Boteco do França, and a tropicália pilgrimage to the corner where Caetano and Gil once played TV Record.

Out of Hong Kong on a Sunday, Rio by Tuesday afternoon. Carnival just closed its lid on Quarta-feira de Cinzas — the streets still smell of beer and sequins, the blocos already rehearsing for next year. Eleven nights ahead along the country''s music spine — three in Rio for samba schools at the quadra and bossa at the Beco, one in the colonial cobblestones of Paraty, three in Salvador''s Pelourinho for Olodum and capoeira-de-Angola and the candomblé drums, two between Recife and Olinda for frevo and maracatu de baque virado, and out through São Paulo for OSESP at Sala São Paulo and choro on a Monday night in Vila Madalena.

Rio de Janeiro · the bateria

Three nights in the cidade maravilhosa with the surdo still ringing from Carnival. Mangueira pink-and-green on a Saturday, bossa at the Beco where Tom Jobim wrote it, capoeira on Copacabana at sunset.

Paraty · the colonial coast

A single night south down the Costa Verde. Cobblestones laid so the tide could wash them clean, cachaça aged in jequitibá-rosa barrels, a small wooden boat in a fjord that shouldn't exist on this continent.

Three nights in the first capital of Brazil, the most African city outside Africa. Olodum's timbau on a Tuesday in Pelourinho, capoeira-de-Angola in the slow ginga of Mestre João Pequeno's line, atabaque drums at a terreiro with the shoes left at the gate.

Two nights in the country's largest city, the city Caetano sang about as a stone in the sun. OSESP at Sala São Paulo on a Thursday, choro at a boteco on a Friday, a last bossa under the elevated highway of Minhocão on a Sunday morning when it closes to cars.

Final evening at a boteco off Rua Aspicuelta, the cavaquinho finding a chord the bandolim has been waiting for. A last pão-de-queijo at the airport counter, a small bottle of cachaça Maria Izabel tucked in the carry-on. Guarulhos by midnight, Hong Kong by Saturday. Eleven nights — surdo and tamborim and agogô still ringing somewhere behind the eyes, the bateria of Mangueira refusing to fade.
