Pacific Northwest · the Cascades week
Seven nights up + down the Cascades arc · solo · rental car from SEA airport. Two nights in Seattle — Space Needle (605 ft, 1962 World”s Fair leftover), Pike Place Market (the original Starbucks
- the fish-throwing fishmongers), Chihuly Garden and Glass next to the Space Needle, MoPOP (Frank Gehry music museum), Olympic Sculpture Park on the waterfront, Ferry to Bainbridge Island for half a day, dinner at Canlis (book 60+ days). Drive west to the Olympic Peninsula for two nights — Hurricane Ridge (1,600 m, the Olympic Mountain panorama), Hoh Rain Forest (one of the few temperate rainforests on Earth, 3.5 m of rain per year), Ruby Beach + the sea stacks on the Pacific coast, Sol Duc hot springs. Drive south to Mt Rainier National Park for one night at Paradise — wildflower meadows at peak Aug bloom, Skyline Trail loop (5 hr, the iconic Rainier-from-above view), Reflection Lakes. Drive south to Portland for one night — Powell”s City of Books (the largest independent bookstore in the world), Voodoo Doughnut, the Pearl District + brewery scene (Deschutes + Widmer + Cascade), the Japanese Garden (the most authentic outside Japan). One final night at Crater Lake National Park — the 1,950-ft-deep deepest lake in the US, formed 7,700 years ago when Mt Mazama collapsed, the 33-mile rim road drive, Wizard Island, before the drive back to SEA for the long flight home.
Wheels down at SeaTac. Then the long week of the Cascades.
Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Seattle by Friday morning — Cathay direct, twelve hours over the Pacific. Seven nights ahead through the Pacific Northwest — two in Seattle for the Space Needle and Pike Place, two on the Olympic Peninsula for the rainforest and the Pacific beaches, one at Mt Rainier for the wildflower meadows, one in Portland for the brewery + food scene, one final night at Crater Lake before the long flight home. August is the cusp — the only viable window for the Cascades (the other 9 months are rain-soaked or snow-covered), daytime 24 °C in the lowlands, the alpine wildflowers at peak in Paradise + Sunrise areas of Rainier, the Olympic rainforest sun-dappled rather than rain-soaked, and Crater Lake''s rim road finally fully open after the snow.
