Chapter 01 · the story

A salmon flies four metres above the ice at Pike Place and the crowd cheers like it's scripted, which it is, and the Space Needle stands 605 feet over the same block where Boeing built the first 747. Seattle's reflex is to perform itself.

The fish at Pike Place are thrown for show. The fishmongers at Pike Place Fish Market started the tossing routine in 1986 as a way to move salmon from the ice display to the wrapping counter without walking around the stall, and three decades on it is the city’s most-photographed thirty-second loop. A king salmon goes up, a man in a yellow rubber apron catches it without looking, and a crowd of two hundred phone cameras lowers in unison. The market itself has been here since 1907 — the oldest continuously operated farmers’ market in the United States — and the original Starbucks across the cobblestones still pours the same green-mermaid logo they used in 1971.

Up the hill at Seattle Center, the Space Needle stands at 605 feet above the old fairgrounds that hosted the 1962 World’s Fair. The revolving deck completes a turn every forty-seven minutes and the glass-floor Loupe rotates beneath your shoes at the same speed, which means you can stand still and watch the city move past in silence. From the east face, Lake Union, the seaplanes, the Cascade foothills. From the west, Elliott Bay and the Olympic peninsula on a clear August afternoon, the mountains a long blue ridge over the water.

Frank Gehry’s MoPOP a block south is the building Gehry himself called a smashed guitar, and Paul Allen built it to house his Jimi Hendrix collection. The crumpled-steel skin in oxidised red and gold looks like a piece of industrial waste from a distance and like a sculpture up close. The two facts — the fish stunt and the billionaire’s guitar museum — are the same city explaining itself the same way. Seattle does not whisper.

Chapter 02 · the story

The Hoh Rain Forest gets 3.5 metres of rain a year and the moss on the bigleaf maples grows in curtains, layered so densely that the trunks vanish under green. Three temperate rainforests like this exist on the planet; one of them is here.

The road from Port Angeles bends west along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, then south through the Sol Duc valley, and somewhere past the Forks turnoff the air changes. The pines thicken. The understory goes green-on-green. By the time the car pulls into the Hoh visitor centre parking lot, the trees are no longer trees in the ordinary sense — they are columns of moss with bark somewhere underneath, and the Hall of Mosses trail loops 1.3 kilometres through what the Park Service calls a temperate rainforest and what the rest of the world calls something closer to a cathedral.

The numbers do the explaining. Three and a half metres of rain a year, all of it caught against the Olympic Mountains’ western flank by the prevailing Pacific weather. Sitka spruce reaching ninety metres. Bigleaf maples and vine maples so heavily curtained in club moss and selaginella and licorice fern that you cannot see the trunk beneath the green. Only three temperate rainforests like this exist on Earth — the Hoh, the parts of southern Chile around Valdivia, and a strip of New Zealand’s South Island — and the silence is the same kind in all three. No insects in the canopy. Footsteps absorbed by moss.

West from the Hoh the highway hits the coast at Ruby Beach and the geometry changes again. Sea stacks rise out of the surf — slabs of basalt left over when the softer rock around them eroded away — and at low tide the tidepools fill with ochre stars and green anemones. Driftwood the size of telephone poles lines the high-water mark, bleached white by salt. The Olympic Peninsula holds three ecosystems back-to-back: alpine at Hurricane Ridge, rainforest at the Hoh, Pacific shore at Ruby. The drive between them is under three hours. The contrast is the point.

Chapter 03 · the story

Mt Rainier rises 4,392 metres out of farmland — the most topographically prominent peak in the contiguous United States, a stratovolcano alone above the Cascades that locals call the Mountain, definite article, no other needed.

Rainier does the trick of looking impossibly tall because nothing else around it is. The Cascades to its south top out under three thousand metres; the rolling farmland west toward Tacoma sits near sea level. The summit at 4,392 metres rises 4,026 metres above the local base — more topographic prominence than any other peak in the contiguous United States — and the result is that on a clear day in Seattle, ninety kilometres north, the mountain hangs in the sky as if pasted there by a child with a glue stick. Locals don’t say Mt Rainier. They say the Mountain, and everyone knows which one.

The Paradise meadows sit at 1,650 metres on the south flank, and the August wildflower bloom is the reason to be standing in them. Lupine in violet drifts, paintbrush in orange, glacier lily and avalanche lily and the white shaggy heads of western pasqueflower gone to seed. The bloom is short — six weeks from mid-July to early September — because the snow that covers Paradise nine months a year only melts off in time for a brief alpine summer. The Skyline Trail loops eight kilometres up to Panorama Point at 2,100 metres, where the Tatoosh Range fans south and Rainier fills the entire northern horizon.

The mountain is also an active stratovolcano. Twenty-six named glaciers cover its upper flanks — the largest single-mountain glacial system in the lower forty-eight — and the USGS classifies it as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, not because eruption is imminent but because the city of Tacoma sits in the lahar path. Walking through lupine in August, the danger is impossible to feel. The mountain is just the mountain, white and enormous, and the bees are working the paintbrush.

Chapter 04 · the story

Powell's City of Books holds over a million volumes across a city block, and 250 kilometres south Crater Lake fills the 594-metre-deep caldera left when Mt Mazama collapsed — the deepest lake in the United States, blue the way nothing else is.

Powell’s takes the entire block bounded by Burnside and Couch and 10th and 11th in downtown Portland. The Pearl Room, the Gold Room, the Blue Room, the Orange Room — nine colour-coded sections across four floors, holding more than a million titles, the largest independent bookstore in the world by a margin that is not close. New and used books shelved side-by-side on the same shelf, sorted by author and not by condition, which is the store’s quiet thesis: that a book is a book regardless of who has read it first. You walk in for one title and leave two hours later with four others. Everyone does. There is a map at the entrance.

Portland’s posture is the bookstore’s posture writ across the city. Independent everything, low-rise everything, light rail and food carts and a long thin grid laid out by surveyors who never quite got around to the rivers. The brewery district in the Pearl walks between Deschutes and Bridgeport and Cascade and back to the Powell’s entrance in twenty minutes flat. The Japanese Garden up in Washington Park is called, by the Japanese ambassador who inspected it in 1988, the most authentic Japanese garden outside Japan, and the koi in the pond are unbothered by the compliment.

South down I-5 then east across the Cascades, Crater Lake fills the caldera that Mt Mazama left when it collapsed in on itself roughly 7,700 years ago in an eruption forty-two times the size of Mount St Helens. The lake is 594 metres deep — the deepest in the United States, the ninth-deepest on Earth — and the water has no inlet or outlet, only snowmelt and rain, which is why it sits at a clarity that pulls the colour out of the visible spectrum and returns only blue. The Rim Drive runs fifty-three kilometres around the caldera. The Watchman, the Phantom Ship, Wizard Island in the middle. Stand at any viewpoint and the lake is the same impossible colour. The crater is the punctuation mark at the end of the trip.

Final morning at Pike Place Market in Seattle — fresh-caught wild king salmon at the original Starbucks corner, hot Beecher's cheese curds, a flat white at Storyville Coffee. Light rail to SEA, Cathay direct west to Hong Kong, landing Saturday evening after the date line. Seven nights — two in the Seattle Space Needle + Pike Place, two on the Olympic Peninsula rainforest, one on Mt Rainier wildflower meadows, two on the Portland + Crater Lake rim. The colour of the Cascades and the depth of Crater Lake already half- remembered.
