Drive north on US-101 + then CA-1 to Santa Barbara for one night — the Mission + the State Street Spanish-Colonial architecture

Continue up to Hearst Castle for one night at Cambria — the William Randolph Hearst 1919-1947 165-room estate with Casa Grande + Neptune Pool + the zebra herd still roaming the grounds. Drive the iconic Big Sur stretch for one night — McWay Falls (the 24-m waterfall onto the beach at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park), Bixby Bridge (the 1932 concrete arch), Point Sur Lighthouse, Pfeiffer Beach. Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Los Angeles by Friday afternoon (the day rewinds across the Pacific) — Cathay direct, twelve hours over the date line. Seven nights ahead up the Pacific Coast Highway — two in LA for the canyon drives and the beaches, three down the central coast (Santa Barbara + Hearst Castle + Big Sur), two in Monterey for the cypress drive + the aquarium, one final night in San Francisco before the flight home. Late May is the cusp — the wildflowers on the Big Sur cliffs at peak, the central-coast marine layer still cooling the inland-summer heat, the Hearst Castle Tour 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 all open, and the Pacific Coast Highway 1 finally fully open after the winter landslide closures.
