Wheels down at Sofia. Then seven nights from the mountains to the sea.

Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Sofia by Saturday afternoon via Istanbul — Turkish, fifteen hours total. Seven nights ahead through Bulgaria — two in Sofia for the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Vitosha mountain backdrop, one at Rila Monastery (UNESCO, the oldest in Bulgaria), two in Plovdiv for the Roman amphitheatre and the painted-house Old Town Kapana quarter, one in Veliko Tarnovo for the medieval fortress, one final night on the Black Sea at Sozopol for the small coastal town. Late May is the cusp — the Rose Valley harvest peaks in the first week of June (the world''s largest source of rose oil for perfumery, 70% of global production), and the Black Sea water is finally warm enough for a swim. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 and is one of the cheapest countries in the EU for travel costs, with rough Cyrillic-Russian-style menus + traditional shopska salad + rakija brandy + Bulgarian yogurt.

Chapter 01 · the story

Within two hundred metres of the Largo, a synagogue, a mosque, an Orthodox cathedral, and a Catholic church share the same patch of sky. Beneath them, the Roman road from Serdica still runs under glass — the city stacked four civilisations deep.

The first thing the alphabet does is slow you down. The metro signs read Сердика, the bakery boards spell баница in tall blue letters, and for two days the reading is half-translation, half-guess — Cyrillic was invented here in the ninth century by the disciples of saints Cyril and Methodius, and Bulgaria is the country that exports it. Walk out of Serdika station and the Roman road from the second century is set into the floor beneath your feet, lit from below, the cart-grooves still visible in the limestone.

Above that, the Largo. Three socialist-classical buildings in yellow stone arranged around a square the Communist Party built to look permanent in 1955. The Party House at the head of it lost its red star in 1990; the empty spike on the roof has never been replaced. Across the boulevard the Sveta Nedelya cathedral, then the Banya Bashi mosque from 1576 with its single minaret, then the 1909 synagogue — the largest Sephardic synagogue in southeast Europe — then the Catholic St Joseph’s cathedral. Four faiths, two hundred metres, no fence between any of them. The locals call it the Square of Tolerance and mean it as a fact, not a slogan.

A kilometre east, Alexander Nevsky’s gold-leaf domes — five tonnes of it, hammered to fifty kilos of leaf — float above yellow paving stones cut from imperial Vienna. The cathedral was finished in 1912 to thank the Russian soldiers who died liberating Bulgaria from the Ottomans in 1878. Inside, the chant on a weekday evening is in Old Church Slavonic, the same language the disciples brought up from Salonica.

Then south, Vitosha rises straight out of the suburbs — a 2,290-metre massif that begins where the tram lines end. On a clear morning the snow on Cherni Vrah is visible from the cathedral steps. The city is built into the foot of a mountain that the city refuses to call countryside, and the mountain refuses to call city. They share the weather.

Chapter 02 · the story

People have been living on these seven hills for six thousand years — older than Rome, older than Athens, older than the pyramids. The Roman amphitheatre cut into the hillside still seats seven thousand, and still hosts opera in July.

The amphitheatre is the easiest way to feel the age of the place. A construction crew building a tunnel in 1972 hit marble; what they uncovered was the second-century theatre Trajan built into the slope of Nebet Tepe, seats numbered in Greek, the Rhodope mountains framed in the gap above the stage. Seven thousand people sat there to watch Roman tragedies, and seven thousand people sit there now to watch Verdi every summer. The acoustics have not been touched. A whisper from the orchestra carries to the last row.

Climb the cobbled lane to the Old Town and the centuries fold again. The Bulgarian Revival houses along Saborna Street are timber and lath painted in ochres and dusty blues, their upper storeys cantilevered out over the lane on hand-carved consoles — oriels that almost touch their neighbours across the street. Wool merchants and tobacco traders built them in the 1830s and 1840s with the money the late Ottoman period made possible, and they painted the ceilings in Vienna-Baroque flourishes because they had been to Vienna and wanted everyone to know it. Balabanov House still has the original cedar ceiling rosette.

Down the hill again, the Kapana quarter — the trap in Bulgarian, named for the maze of Ottoman lanes you used to lose yourself in shopping. After the city’s 2019 turn as European Capital of Culture the quarter became the country’s clearest example of a working creative renaissance: stencil murals on nineteenth-century plaster, third-wave coffee next to a 1920s barbershop, a bookshop selling Cyrillic translations of Pessoa, a gallery in a former garage. The streets are narrow enough that two cars cannot pass; the cafes have moved their tables onto the cobbles by general agreement.

What sticks in Plovdiv is not any single ruin but the layering. Thracian acropolis, Roman amphitheatre, Byzantine wall, Ottoman hammam, Revival house, Soviet block, Kapana mural — all of it on the same hillside, none of it pretending the others are not there.

Chapter 03 · the story

At nightfall the Tsarevets fortress turns into a forty-five-minute projection: lasers, bells, choral chant. By the next afternoon the road has dropped four hundred metres to the Black Sea, and the second-empire capital gives way to a fishing village on a stone peninsula.

Veliko Tarnovo sits inside a hairpin bend of the Yantra, and the fortress on the high ground inside the bend was the seat of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 until the Ottomans took it in 1393. From the bridge across the gorge the hill looks medieval in the way drawings of medieval things look medieval — towers, walls, a single church on the summit silhouetted against sky. The Patriarchal Cathedral on top was rebuilt in the 1980s, its interior frescoed by Teofan Sokerov in a style that is neither Byzantine nor modern but something the Communist culture ministry would have called socialist Orthodox. The result is stranger and better than that sounds.

The sound-and-light show begins at nightfall. Three laser projectors throw imperial-purple light across the fortress walls, the bells of forty-three churches in the lower town ring at once on a recorded loop, and a choral Te Deum in Old Slavonic narrates the rise of the Asen dynasty, the Ottoman conquest, the 1393 fall, and the 1879 liberation in forty-five minutes. It is part civic ritual, part Soviet-era son et lumière, part sincere medieval reenactment, and it runs every clear evening from April to October on demand.

In the morning the road drops south-east towards the coast, the Balkan range falling away behind, and four hours later the asphalt ends at Sozopol — a stone peninsula stuck out into the Black Sea, walls in places still Byzantine, the streets too narrow for cars. The old town houses are Bulgarian Revival in the same vocabulary as Plovdiv’s, but the timber is silvered from the salt and the upper storeys lean further out, cantilevered on consoles above the lanes so that the sky narrows to a strip of blue between two roofs. Fishing nets dry on the seawall. The boats are wooden, painted in pairs of complementary colours, and they go out at four in the morning.

Sozopol was Apollonia Pontica to the Greeks, founded in the seventh century BC; the Apollo bronze that once stood here was taken to Rome as war booty in 72 BC. What remains is the peninsula, the houses, the salt wind, and the long slow Black Sea — a different Bulgaria from the fortress two days behind, and the right last word before the drive back to Sofia.

Seven nights — three in Sofia + Rila Monastery, two in Plovdiv, one in Veliko Tarnovo, one on the Black Sea at Sozopol. The colour of the Boyana frescoes and the silhouette of Tsarevets Fortress already half-remembered.
