Out of Hong Kong on a Wednesday, Kona on the Big Island by Wednesday afternoon — the time zone clawed back by the date line. Eleven nights ahead across three islands and three rental cars — four on the Big Island for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and Mauna Kea''s summit at 4,205 m, four on Maui for the Road to Hana and the cinder dome of Haleakalā at sunrise, and three on Kauai for the Nā Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon (the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific"). Skipping Oahu deliberately — the busiest island is what most visitors do once and never repeat — going straight to the wilder three.

Chapter 01 · the story

Mauna Kea rises 4,205 m above the sea and another 6,000 m below it, which makes it — measured from the seafloor — the tallest mountain on earth. From the summit at sunset the curve of the Pacific is visible. Forty kilometres south, Kīlauea is still venting.

The road up Mauna Kea climbs from sea level to 4,205 m in two hours of switchbacks. The standard rental contract from Kona forbids you outright above the visitor centre — the summit road has been an explicit exclusion on the major chains for years — so the tour van picks you up at the hotel instead. At the visitor centre at 2,800 m the driver stops for forty minutes; the altitude gain is too fast otherwise. The last eight miles are unpaved. The thirteen observatories at the top belong to eleven countries. The Subaru telescope is Japanese. The Keck twins are Caltech. At sunset the shadow of the mountain falls east across the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, a perfect triangle laid across forty kilometres of lava.

Forty kilometres south of that triangle, Halemaʻumaʻu is still active. Kīlauea has erupted in episodes through 2024 and 2025, the lava lake in the summit crater filling and draining on its own schedule, and the overlook at Volcanoes National Park is either glowing or quiet depending on the week. The 1959 Kīlauea Iki crater walk crosses a solidified lava lake, the surface still warm in places where steam vents through the cracks. The trail signs are clear: stay on the path, the crust is thin.

What the island is, geologically, is a single shield volcano that has been building itself out of the seafloor for a million years. The black sand at Punaluʻu is yesterday’s lava, ground down by surf. The sea turtles haul out at midday because the sand is warm. The Kona coast on the west is dry and the Hilo coast on the east is wet because Mauna Loa, between them, intercepts every cloud that the trade winds push west. Two ecosystems, one volcano, one short rental drive between them.

The thing the Big Island asks is to hold scale. Forty kilometres of shadow at sunset, six thousand metres of mountain below the waterline, a lava lake that has its own weekly schedule. The map says one island. The ground says otherwise.

Four nights on the Valley Isle. The Road to Hāna takes most of one day, Haleakalā summit at dawn takes the next, the rest is for the small beaches and reef snorkels along the south shore.

Chapter 02 · the story

Haleakalā means house of the sun. The summit is at 3,055 m and the drive from sea level to the dawn parking lot takes an hour and ten minutes in the dark. The reservation locks sixty days out and there is no walk-up. The crater holds the cold until the light arrives.

Lahaina burned on 8 August 2023. The fire crossed the Front Street historic district in under an hour and killed a hundred and two people, the deadliest US wildfire in a century, and the 150-year-old banyan tree on the courthouse lawn was scorched to the trunk but did not die. It has put out new leaves. The town is rebuilding on a timeline that is not a tourist’s to set. Visit if you go, spend money at the businesses that have reopened, but go quiet. The signs at the edges of the cordoned-off blocks ask exactly that.

The Road to Hāna is sixty-four miles of coastal highway with something near six hundred curves and around fifty single-lane bridges. The locals drive it daily. Tourists drive it once and treat it as a destination, which is a misread — the road is the destination. The waterfalls (Twin Falls at mile 2, Upper Waikani at mile 19, Wailua at mile 45) are stops, not the point. The point is the rainforest closing over the windshield and the smell of guava when the window is down.

Haleakalā at 4 a.m. is colder than anyone packs for. The parking lot at 3,055 m is full by 4:30 and the rangers turn back anyone without a reservation at the gate four miles below. The crater is twelve kilometres across and seven hundred metres deep — the moon landings trained here — and as the sun comes up the cinder cones inside it turn red, then orange, then the colour of rust. People applaud. Some cry. It is genuinely worth the alarm clock.

Mākena’s small beaches on the south are the part of Maui that guidebooks tend to skip. Little Beach, Big Beach, the lava-rock coves between them — short walks from the road, no signage, the sand still volcanic-grit underfoot. The trade winds drop in the late afternoon. The water turns flat. That is when to swim.

Chapter 03 · the story

The Nā Pali cliffs rise 1,200 m straight out of the Pacific along twenty-seven kilometres of coast that has no road. There is a trail. There is a boat. There is a helicopter. Otherwise the cliffs are what they have been for five million years: themselves, unaccompanied.

Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands. Five million years of rainfall has done to it what younger islands have not yet had time for: the volcanic shield has been carved into ridges and amphitheatres and the long deep cuts of Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, sixteen kilometres long and nine hundred metres deep. The road up to the Kalalau Lookout climbs from sea level at Waimea town to 1,200 m at the rim. The lookout is often in cloud. When it clears, the valley floor below is two kilometres straight down.

The Nā Pali Coast has no road for a reason. The cliffs are too steep and the rainfall too high — the windward face gets twelve metres of rain a year — and the trail that does exist, the Kalalau, runs eighteen kilometres along the cliff faces to a beach that can only be reached on foot or by sea. The catamarans out of Port Allen take five hours to run the coast and back. The boat is the easy way to see what the trail does the hard way: sea caves at Honopu and Nuʻalolo, the waterfalls landing in salt, the cliff that rises out of the water and keeps going past where a head can comfortably tilt back.

Hanalei Bay on the north shore is a perfect crescent two miles long. The pier at the east end has been there in roughly its current form since 1912 and is the place to watch the sun set into the western end of the bay. The taro fields behind the town are still the working agricultural backbone of the valley. The poi sold at the roadside stand on Kūhiō Highway is yesterday’s taro, pounded.

What stays after Kauai is how quiet a place can be when there is no road through it. The cliffs do not perform. They sit there, five million years old, doing the thing they do.

May 3 · Day 12 · the last one

Last poke bowl on Hanalei Bay. Then the flight home.

Final evening at a Hanalei pier picnic table — ahi poke with avocado and shoyu, sticky rice, sweet POG juice, the long Kalalau ridge on the horizon. Last drive to Līhuʻe, Hawaiian Airlines back to Honolulu and onward to Hong Kong via the date line, landing in Hong Kong two calendar days later. Eleven nights — four with Kīlauea''s glow on the eyeline, four with the Hāna road''s waterfalls and Haleakalā''s cinder cones, three with the Nā Pali Coast rising 1,200 m above the ocean. The plate lunch and the shave ice and the long volcanic horizons already half- remembered.
