Wheels down at Calgary. Then the long Icefields Parkway.

Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday, Calgary by Saturday afternoon — Cathay direct over the pole. Early September shoulder, the larches starting their yellow turn at altitude, the bears still grazing low. Eight nights ahead on a Banff–Jasper rental-car spine — three in Banff and Canmore for the gondola summit and the Bow Falls walk, two at Lake Louise for the glacial-blue water and the Plain of Six Glaciers tea-house hike, two driving the Icefields Parkway with stops at Peyto Lake and the Athabasca Glacier ice walk, and one final night at Jasper for Maligne Lake and the Spirit Island boat. The road from Calgary to Jasper is 425 km and one of the great scenic drives on the planet · do not rush it.

Last elk at the Athabasca riverbank. Then the flight home.

Final evening at Jasper''s Athabasca riverbank — a bull elk grazing the willows 30 m away, the river behind in pewter under the last light. Last poutine at a Patricia Street counter, drive back to Calgary at dawn (5 hr), Cathay direct west at noon. Hong Kong by sunset the next calendar day. Eight nights — three under Banff''s skyline of Cascade Mountain, two with Lake Louise''s turquoise on the eyeline, two along the Icefields Parkway past the toe of the Athabasca Glacier, one at Jasper with the bull elk and the dark sky preserve overhead. The bannock and the maple butter and the long mountain horizons already half-remembered.
