Queensland · the Great Barrier Reef week
Eight nights through tropical-coast Queensland at the dry-season peak · solo · domestic flights + rental car at Cairns, ferry + boat elsewhere. Three nights in Cairns + Daintree — half-day reef trip from Port Douglas (the Outer Ribbon Reef sites are 30 km offshore, ride the catamaran), the Skyrail Cableway over the rainforest from Smithfield to Kuranda, Daintree National Park overnight at Cape Tribulation (the only place on Earth where two UNESCO sites meet — rainforest and reef), Mossman Gorge for the Indigenous-guided Dreamtime walk, Mount Mulligan side-trip optional. Fly south to Hamilton Island (Whitsundays) for three nights — Whitehaven Beach by catamaran day-trip (push your toes into the 98%-silica squeaky white sand), Hill Inlet lookout for the postcard “swirl” view, snorkel at Heart Reef + Bait Reef on a half-day trip, sailing the Whitsunday Passage on a sunset catamaran. Fly to Bundaberg + light aircraft to Lady Elliot Island for two final nights — only 200 guests on the island, no mobile signal, snorkel from the beach for green turtles + manta rays + reef sharks, scuba day-trip if certified, Milky Way at midnight in zero light pollution.
Wheels down at Cairns. Then three reefs in eight nights.
Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday night, Cairns by Sunday afternoon — Cathay direct to BNE then domestic up to CNS, eleven hours all in. Eight nights ahead down Queensland''s tropical coast — three at Cairns for the Daintree rainforest and the northern Great Barrier Reef out of Port Douglas, three at the Whitsundays for the 74 islands and Whitehaven Beach (the whitest sand on Earth, 98% silica), two final nights on tiny Lady Elliot Island at the southern tip of the GBR for manta rays + green turtles + a sky black enough that the Milky Way casts shadows. September is the cusp — the southern hemisphere dry season, daytime 26 °C, water 24 °C, no jellyfish (April-Oct only), no rain, and the coral health is at its annual peak before the November-Feb spawning and the summer bleaching risk.
