Chapter 01 · the story

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, but the trick is that the rainforest gets to the water first. The Daintree is 180 million years old — the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth — and it walks down to the sand at Cape Tribulation, where Cook ran aground in 1770 and named the place after his bad day.

The catamaran leaves Port Douglas at 8:30 and runs ninety minutes north-east to the Outer Ribbon. The colour gradient starts the moment the engines slow: the inner reef is green-grey from river silt and the mangrove run-off of three wet seasons, and then a line appears in the water where the silt stops and the outer reef begins, and the blue underneath is the blue of every brochure ever printed about this place. The first drop-in is at Agincourt, the second at St Crispin. The clownfish in the anemones are smaller than a thumb.

North of the Daintree River the ferry crosses to gravel. The road is sealed for the first kilometre and then it is not, and the canopy closes overhead in the way that only a forest with this kind of head-start can manage. The fan palms are Licuala ramsayi, endemic to the Daintree lowlands. The cassowary signs are real — the flightless bird is a forty-kilo dinosaur with a blue neck and a claw that can open a stomach — and the only way to see one is to drive slowly and accept that you probably will not.

Cape Tribulation Beach has no swimming because of the box jellyfish in summer and the saltwater crocs that move between the river and the sea, and the absence of swimmers is the point. The beach is empty. Mossman Gorge has clear cold water that comes off the Atherton Tableland; the Kuku-Yalanji guides do the welcome-to-country in language first. Skyrail back to Cairns is ninety minutes of canopy from above, and the Scenic Railway down via Barron Gorge is the slow way home. Two World Heritage Sites touch here. They touch nowhere else on the planet.

Chapter 02 · the story

Whitehaven Beach is 98% pure silica. The sand does not warm under the sun. You stand on it at noon in September and the grains stay cool, and the squeak under your toes is the quartz grinding against itself — a sound the rest of the world's beaches forgot how to make.

The catamaran out of Hamilton Island marina takes an hour and ten minutes across the Whitsunday Passage. The water shifts colour every few minutes, and the named blues run out before the colours do: turquoise, aquamarine, a milky jade where the tidal channels run over the silica. Whitsunday Island appears low and green, and the boat drops anchor at the south end of Whitehaven. The walk over the sandbar is six kilometres if you do the whole beach. Almost no one does.

The trick the silica plays is geological. The sand came in from somewhere — no one knows where, since none of the surrounding catchments produce quartz this pure — and it has been sorting itself for millions of years against the tides of Hill Inlet. The inlet is the photograph: a tidal estuary at the north end of the beach where the white sand swirls into the green water and back out again, a new pattern at every change of tide, never the same shape twice. The lookout track climbs a hundred and sixty steps through hoop pine and grass-tree to the platform on the ridge.

Heart Reef is fifteen minutes by helicopter from Hamilton. The formation is no bigger than a tennis court — a small coral bommie that happens to be shaped like a heart — and no one is allowed to swim there because the coral has become an icon and icons need protecting. From above it sits inside Hardy Reef like a thumbprint. The sunset catamaran on the last evening runs an hour around the island, drinks on the foredeck, the Whitsunday Passage going pink to the west, the lights of Hamilton coming on behind.

Chapter 03 · the story

Lady Elliot is the southern full stop of the Great Barrier Reef — a forty-hectare coral cay where the seabirds outnumber the guests three hundred to one and the green turtles haul up at midnight to dig holes in the sand. The light aircraft from Bundaberg lands on a coral runway.

The Seair flight from Bundaberg takes thirty minutes in a seven-seater. The pilot does the safety briefing himself, the runway is a strip of crushed coral across the middle of the island, and the windsock at the end is the only piece of infrastructure visible from the air. The cay is two kilometres by one. The reef is the fringe. The lighthouse — 1873, stone, white-painted — stands on the western edge, the only thing on the horizon for the manta rays that come in to be cleaned.

The mantas are the headline. Lady Elliot is one of three places on Earth where the reef mantas appear year-round, drawn in to the cleaning station off the lagoon edge where the small wrasse pick the parasites off their wings. They are five metres across, the largest ray on the planet, and they move past you at swimming speed in water clear enough to count their gill slits. The first one always arrives without warning. The lagoon is also the green-turtle nursery — the resident population is two hundred — and the November nesting season is months away, but the turtles glide under the snorkel mask all the same.

The Eco Resort has two hundred beds and no mobile signal. The generator runs on solar by day and diesel by night, the dining hall serves everyone at the same time, and the marine biologist gives the five-o’clock talk in the same room every evening. At midnight you walk out to the beach with no torch. The Magellanic clouds are overhead, the Southern Cross is upright, and the Milky Way casts a shadow on the sand. The cay sits on its reef like a small green disc, and the reef goes on under the dark for sixty kilometres south before it stops.

Last barramundi at the Hello Harry. Then the long flight home.

Final lunch in Brisbane''s South Bank — barramundi fish and chips with a Pure Blonde at Hello Harry, the deer at the Streets Beach lagoon swimming pool. Train to Brisbane Domestic, Qantas back via Sydney, Cathay across to Hong Kong overnight. Eight nights — three under the Daintree canopy, three on a catamaran through the Whitsundays, two on the southern coral cay of Lady Elliot. The colour of the reef from 30 m up and the silica-white of Whitehaven Beach already half-remembered.
