Chapter 01 · the story

The name means apple-y. The wild ancestor of every supermarket apple in the world — Malus sieversii — still grows on the slopes above the city. The Tian Shan sits at the end of every avenue, white even in August, and Almaty arranges itself around the mountain like a courtyard around its tree.

The taxi from ALA runs north-to-south along streets laid out on a Russian grid and the mountain gets bigger the whole way. The Tian Shan is not a backdrop; it is the south wall of the city. Every intersection on Dostyk Avenue ends in white peaks. Locals give directions in vertical terms — vverkh up toward the mountain, vniz down toward the steppe — because the compass is the geology.

The etymology is the giveaway. Alma is apple, -ty is the possessive — the apple-y place. The botanist Nikolai Vavilov worked out in the 1920s that the world’s domesticated apple descends from Malus sieversii, which grows wild here and only here, on the foothills of these mountains. The orchards on the edge of Medeu still ripen the ancestor fruit in August. You can buy a kilo at the Green Bazaar — small, tart, unbranded — for the price of a coffee.

Up at 1,691 m the Medeu skating rink sits where a glacial moraine was scraped flat in 1949. Below it a 150-m mudflow dam holds the mountain back from the city — Almaty has been buried by sel mudslides three times in living memory, and the engineers stopped the next one with explosives in 1973. Above Medeu the Shymbulak cable car lifts you to 3,200 m in twenty minutes and the apple trees give way to spruce and then to scree.

What stays from Almaty is the geometry. The mountain in the south, the steppe in the north, the city pinned between them on alluvial fans threaded with the meltwater channels that locals call aryks. The Zenkov Cathedral in Panfilov Park, raised in 1907 without a single nail, survived the 1911 earthquake that levelled half the brick city — wood gives, stone doesn’t. Almaty knows the mountain made it and could unmake it. The apples are the truce.

Chapter 02 · the story

In 1997 the capital moved a thousand kilometres north onto the bare steppe. There was no city here — a Soviet provincial town called Akmola, fifty winters of minus forty, and grass to the horizon. Thirty years on, Norman Foster's glass tent rises out of the grass like the future arrived ahead of schedule.

Astana is a capital built on a decision. In December 1997 the government moved north from Almaty — earthquake risk, Chinese border proximity, the demographic argument that the new capital needed to anchor the Russian-majority north — and the steppe town of Akmola became the seat of the republic by ukaz. The renamings came after. Akmola to Astana in 1998. Astana to Nur-Sultan in 2019 when the founding president stepped down. Back to Astana in 2022 when his name became inconvenient. The city has had four names in twenty-five years.

Norman Foster arrived in 2004. The brief was a glass pyramid for the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions — the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, finished 2006, sixty-two metres on each side and a dove-stained-glass crown at the apex. In 2010 he came back with the Khan Shatyr, the world’s largest tensile structure, a 150-metre transparent tent pitched over an indoor beach and a tropical-climate shopping mall. Outside it is minus forty in January. Inside the tent it is twenty-four degrees and the sand was shipped in from the Maldives.

The axial mall between Bayterek Tower and the Ak Orda Presidential Palace runs 1.5 kilometres east-to-west, the ministries on either side like a parade of Astana’s commissioned architects — Kisho Kurokawa’s master plan, Foster’s two crowns, Manfredi Nicoletti’s concert hall. Bayterek itself is the symbol — a 105-metre tower holding a gold sphere, the egg of the samruk bird laid in the tree of life, the Kazakh creation myth rendered as civic monument and finished in 2002.

Thirty-five kilometres west, at ALZHIR, eighteen thousand women were imprisoned between 1937 and 1953 for being married to men the regime had already shot. The museum keeps the steppe wind in the courtyard. The new capital is twenty minutes by car from the old one. Astana is one country holding both.

Last beshbarmak at Nogai. Then the long flight south.

Final dinner at Nogai restaurant in Almaty — beshbarmak (the Kazakh national dish of boiled mutton on hand-rolled pasta), kymyz fermented mare's milk, the traditional Kazakh meal eaten with hands. Taxi to Almaty airport at midnight, Air Astana direct south to Hong Kong by Saturday morning.
