Chapter 01 · the story

The Astronomical Clock has been keeping time on the south wall of the Old Town Hall since 1410. Every hour, on the hour, the twelve apostles still walk past the small windows above the dial, and a skeleton on the right pulls a rope to ring the bell.

The clock is the oldest one in the world that still works. Six hundred and seventeen years on the same wall — through the Hussite wars, through the Thirty Years’ War, through the Nazi shelling of May 1945 that took out the roof and the calendar disc and most of the apostles — and the mechanism inside is still the original gothic gear-train of Mikuláš of Kadaň. The skeleton on the right flips an hourglass. Then he tugs the rope. The bell answers. The apostles file past their small windows. A golden cockerel at the top flaps its wings. Then, every hour, the trumpeter on the tower above plays a four-note fanfare to the four cardinal points.

The crowd in Staroměstské náměstí for this is three hundred deep by 11am in May. The trick is to be on Karlův most before sunrise — the bridge is empty for the one hour the city gives you — and then to be back in the square just before the eight-o’clock chime, when the apostles still walk but the audience is twenty locals and a man sweeping cigarette ends.

What stays is that the city kept the clock. Through every regime that came through — Habsburg, First Republic, Protectorate, the Communist forty years, the Velvet — someone wound it. Someone fixed it. The 1945 fire took most of the wooden apostles and the calendar; the city carved new ones from the surviving photographs and put them back. Kafka grew up four streets away in Josefov and he would have heard the same four-note trumpet through the windows of the Gymnasium on Old Town Square. Petřín hill rises on the far bank and you can climb it for the view, but the clock is the proof: Prague’s deal with time is that the hour is kept.

Chapter 02 · the story

The Vltava bends a full S through the town and the Renaissance castle sits on the inside of the upper curve, its 1591 tower painted in trompe-l'œil stone blocks because real stone was too expensive. The illusion has held for four hundred and thirty-six years.

The painted tower is the trick the whole town is built on. The Rosenberg lords couldn’t afford to clad the věž in cut stone, so in 1591 they hired the Italian Gabriel de Blanda to paint the stones on the plaster — ashlar blocks, shadows falling the right way, a chequer of pink and cream and ochre going all the way up the seven storeys. From the bridge below the illusion still works. You climb it for the view: from the top, the Vltava’s S-bend cradles the town like a hand, the red-clay roofs spread out beneath in a single warm sheet, and the Baroque theatre behind you is the one from 1766 that still has its original hand-cranked thunder-machine, its painted backdrops, the four working stage-machinery sets that survive nowhere else in Europe.

Egon Schiele came here in spring 1911. His mother was born in the town. He brought Wally Neuzil and they took a house on Linecká street and he worked through the summer on the landscape watercolours and on the small nudes of local girls who modelled for a few crowns. The town ran them out in October. Three months. The Schiele Art Centrum sits two streets from where his studio was and shows the surviving Krumlov-period work — the river, the roofs from above, one or two of the nudes that started the trouble.

By 5pm the day-trip buses leave and the lanterns come on along Latrán street and the town belongs again to the people who live in it. The thing to do is to stand on the castle bridge after dark, look down at the S-bend with the painted tower lit from below, and notice that the painted stones still look real. Four centuries of weather and the trick still holds.

Chapter 03 · the story

The Sachertorte at Café Sacher is the original — the 1832 recipe Franz Sacher invented at sixteen for Metternich's guests, still made on the premises, still served warm with unsweetened whipped cream and a tiny chocolate seal stamped with the hotel's name.

The cake is a small ceremony. The waiter in the black tailcoat sets the plate down with the two triangles of Sachertorte sitting upright, the apricot-jam layer just visible between the chocolate sponge and the dark glaze, and beside it a separate porcelain dish of Schlagobers — the cream is unsweetened on principle, because the cake is sweet enough. The seal on the top is a disc of bitter chocolate pressed with the word Sacher. A small melange comes with it. The price is twelve euros and that is also part of the ceremony.

The recipe sits at the centre of a feud. Sacher’s grandson sold some torte to Demel in the 1930s and the resulting court case over which café owned the name Original Sachertorte ran for seven years and ended in a 1963 settlement: Sacher keeps the title, Demel calls theirs Eduard-Sacher-Torte with the seal upside-down. Both are five minutes’ walk apart. The civic position is that you owe yourself both.

Outside the café the Stephansdom spire is four streets north — the gothic tiles in the chevron green-and-gold and zigzag of the Habsburg eagle, the south tower 136 m and climbable for a euro, the same tiles still being replaced one at a time by a workshop behind the cathedral that has been doing the job since 1359. The Lipizzaner stallions in the Spanish Riding School are rehearsing on the same morning at the Hofburg next door, the same haute école school they have run since 1572. The Belvedere across town holds Klimt’s Der Kuss. Three sweetnesses in three quarters: torte, dressage, gold leaf. Vienna is methodical about all three.

Chapter 04 · the story

The flying-saucer disc on top of the SNP Bridge is genuinely called UFO. It hangs eighty-five metres above the Danube on a single pylon, the only one of its kind in Europe, a 1972 Communist-era engineering boast nobody knew quite what to do with afterwards.

The bridge is called Most SNP — Slovak National Uprising Bridge — and the disc on top is officially the UFO Observation Deck and unofficially just the UFO. It sits at 95 metres on a single asymmetric pylon, the cables running off it like a fan to the road deck below, the whole thing finished in 1972 to a brutal-modernist brief that wanted to give socialist Bratislava its own monumental crossing. The lift inside the pylon takes forty-five seconds. The deck on top serves overpriced espressos and rotates slowly enough that you don’t quite notice — just enough that the Bratislavský hrad on its hill comes into view, then the old town’s red roofs, then the brown plain of the Danube curving toward the Hungarian border thirty kilometres on.

The Communists demolished a third of the old Jewish quarter to build the approach road on the Petržalka side. The synagogue that stood at the foot of the cathedral is now a parking lot with a marble outline showing where the walls were. The bridge crosses over the gap. This is the trade-off the building made visible: a socialist gesture against a hole it cut to make itself.

Back across in Staré Mesto the bronzes are the other thing. A man in a manhole — Čumil, the Watcher — leaning his chin on the lip of the pavement at Panská and Rybárska, polished gold by forty years of palms. Napoleon at the bench in Hlavné námestie. A photographer round the corner at Laurinská. The eastern-most capital of the European Union does this casually: a flying saucer over the river, bronze men in the streets, halušky at the Slovak Pub with sheep cheese and crisp bacon, and the day-trip crowd from Vienna gone by six.

Chapter 05 · the story

Buda is hills and a castle. Pest is the flat grid and the Parliament. The two cities sit on opposite banks of the Danube and were stitched into one city only in 1873 — the Chain Bridge between them, the seam of the joining still visible from either side.

The unification is a recent fact. Buda on the hilly west bank had been the royal seat since the thirteenth century; Pest on the flat east bank was the merchant town; Óbuda upstream was the old Roman Aquincum. The 1873 act of the Hungarian parliament welded the three into one. Széchenyi’s Chain Bridge — the first permanent crossing, finished 1849 — became the spine, and the view from Buda Castle hill across to the Országház parliament building on Pest is still the picture the city sells. The two banks read like two cities because they are.

Six a.m. at Széchenyi fürdő is the move. The thermal baths in Városliget park open at six and the locals are there first: men in their seventies playing chess on the floating boards across the corner of the outer pool, the water at 38°C, steam rising off the mustard-yellow neo-Baroque facade into the cold morning, the chess pieces wet from the players’ hands. The pool was built in 1913 over an artesian well that still feeds it at 77°C from 1,256 metres down. The chess has been there since the 1980s. Nobody talks much; the games are slow and serious and the loser buys the next round of pálinka at the cafe by the changing rooms.

By midnight the city has rearranged itself to Szimpla Kert on Kazinczy utca in district VII — the original 1999 romkocsma that started the ruin-bar movement, an abandoned tenement courtyard filled with mismatched chairs, a bathtub sofa, a Trabant cut in half. Forints only. Buda is asleep across the river, the bridge floodlights cut at midnight on the dot, and Pest goes on. The deal of 1873 still holds: one city, two temperaments, the brown river between them keeping the score.

May 18 · Day 11 · the last one

Last lights on the Chain Bridge. Then the flight home.

Final midnight in Pest. The Lánchíd chains lit up over a dark Danube, the funicular shut for the night, a last pohár of Tokaji on the hotel terrace. Liszt Ferenc by morning, Vienna by noon, Hong Kong by the next dawn. Ten nights — every one of them yours, the trdelník smoke and the paprika and the lilacs already half-remembered.
