Chapter 01 · the story

At midday the Pantheon's oculus drops a perfect disc of sun through 43 metres of unreinforced concrete dome and lays it down on the marble floor. Hadrian's engineers cast that dome in the year 126 and nobody has built one larger from concrete since.

The trick the Pantheon plays on the eye is that the dome looks shallow from the piazza and bottomless from inside. Walk through the bronze doors at noon in April and a column of light is already in the room — a disc of sun ten metres across, projected through the eight-metre hole at the apex, sliding slowly across the porphyry roundels in the floor as the earth turns. The coffers narrow as they climb, five rings of them, smaller and smaller, so the dome reads as deeper than it is. The oculus is the only light source. On a wet day rain falls through it onto a drainage grid in the centre of the floor, where it has been falling for nineteen hundred years.

Three streets away, in a side chapel at San Luigi dei Francesi, Caravaggio painted Matthew three times — called, written, martyred — on the walls of a room nobody bothered to brighten until 1600. The chapel is lit by a single candelabrum that the church will turn on for a one-euro coin in the box by the door. Drop the coin and a hard yellow light cuts across the canvas and the apostle’s face comes out of the dark exactly the way Caravaggio meant it to. The light goes off after two minutes. Drop another coin.

What stays from Rome is the layering. The Pantheon is a temple that became a church that became a tomb for Raphael. The Forum is a marketplace that became a quarry that became a cow pasture that became a ruin again. Every wall has at least three skins. The Borghese is a cardinal’s pleasure villa with Bernini’s marble Daphne still in the act of turning into a tree, leaves breaking out of her fingertips in mid-stride. Nothing in Rome is only one thing. The city does not require you to choose.

Chapter 02 · the story

The water organ at Villa d'Este still plays on the hour, driven by nothing but the head of pressure of the Aniene river running downhill since 1572. Across the valley Hadrian built a private city for himself — a hundred and twenty hectares of villa masquerading as countryside.

Cardinal Ippolito d’Este lost a papal election in 1549 and the consolation prize was the governorship of Tivoli, which came with an old Benedictine monastery on a hill. He spent the rest of his life turning the monastery into a garden, and the garden into a hydraulic argument: that water under pressure could replace music, sculpture, weather, and the passage of time. The Hundred Fountains terrace runs a hundred metres of carved stone heads, each spitting a thin arc of Aniene into a long basin. The Fountain of the Owl plays a bird call when the valves cycle. The water organ, restored in 2003, plays a four-minute madrigal every two hours, the air forced through brass pipes by a falling column of water with no moving parts a Renaissance plumber would not recognise.

Six kilometres down the hill, Hadrian had already done it bigger. Villa Adriana is not a villa — it is a hundred-and-twenty-hectare imperial retreat where the emperor recreated, in stone, every place he had ever loved. The Canopus is an Egyptian canal in a Sabine valley. The Maritime Theatre is a circular island in a circular moat, reached by a swing bridge the emperor pulled in behind him when he wanted to be alone. The Poikile is the painted stoa of Athens reproduced in travertine. Hadrian travelled more than any emperor before him and built his memory of the world into the ground here, then died of dropsy in 138 with the place still unfinished.

What stays from Tivoli is that two rich men, fourteen centuries apart, looked at the same hillside and reached for the same answer: build the world you have seen, in stone, in water, where you can walk through it in the evening. The cypresses lining the Canopus were not there in Hadrian’s time. Everything else was.

Chapter 03 · the story

Orvieto sits on a single plug of volcanic tufa rising 150 metres out of the Paglia valley, an entire town balanced on a cork. The striped Duomo is the size of a small cathedral and the rock under it is full of holes — twelve hundred Etruscan cellars carved straight down into the cliff.

The funicular up from Orvieto Scalo takes two minutes and climbs the cliff at a thirty-five-degree angle, the cable hauling a counterweighted car that was, until 1990, balanced by a tank of water filled at the top and drained at the bottom. Step out at Piazza Cahen and the town begins immediately — narrow streets in the same butter-coloured tufa as the cliff itself, so the houses and the bedrock are one continuous mass quarried over twenty-five centuries from below. The Etruscans hollowed out the first cellars in the sixth century BCE. The medieval guilds added wells, olive presses, dovecotes, escape tunnels. The Orvieto Underground tour shows you a city beneath the city — twelve hundred excavated chambers, the largest network of carved tufa rooms in Europe.

The Duomo is the reason most people come up the funicular. The facade is mosaic and stripe and gold in alternating bands of travertine and basalt, finished in 1591 after three centuries of work by Lorenzo Maitani and successors. Inside, Luca Signorelli spent five years from 1499 painting the Cappella di San Brizio with a Last Judgment cycle so violent and corporeal that Michelangelo came to Orvieto in 1508 to study it before starting the Sistine. The damned souls writhe in a single panel — naked, muscled, faces twisted in actual pain — and the proportions of the bodies, the mid-stride drama of them, are visibly the source code for what Michelangelo would do four years later in Rome.

The other thing Orvieto does, beyond the cathedral and the cliff, is wine. The Etruscans pressed grapes in tufa cellars because the volcanic rock holds a constant 13°C year-round. The same cellars still hold the same wine — Orvieto Classico, a straw-coloured DOC white pressed from Trebbiano and Grechetto — in barrels in caves under the streets. The cellars are below the restaurant floor. You can hear nothing from down there.

Chapter 04 · the story

Twice a summer — on 2 July and 16 August — Siena pours sand across the brick of the Piazza del Campo and ten bareback horses run three laps around the shell-shaped piazza in ninety seconds. The Palio is older than the Renaissance and the contrade are older still.

The piazza slopes. Stand at the high end by the Fonte Gaia and the whole shell-shape tilts gently away towards the Palazzo Pubblico, the eleven brick segments fanning out from the campanile like the ribs of an opened scallop. The shape is the reason for the Palio. Three times around the perimeter at full gallop, the horses leaning into the brick-banked curves at San Martino and the Casato — the two corners where most of the falls happen — and ninety seconds later one of the seventeen contrade has won the silk banner and the others have not. The race has run, in roughly this form, since 1644. The contrade themselves predate it by four hundred years: neighbourhoods turned into tribes, each with its own flag, its own church, its own baptismal font, its own historical enemy across the city.

The Allegory of Good and Bad Government in the Sala dei Nove of the Palazzo Pubblico is the other thing Siena does that nowhere else in Italy does. Ambrogio Lorenzetti painted the cycle from 1338 to 1339 — three full walls of fresco showing what happens to a city ruled well and a city ruled badly. The good city: women dancing in the street, merchants weighing goods, a teacher lecturing, peasants bringing wheat through an open gate. The bad city: a tyrant in chains, soldiers, ruin. It is the first secular landscape in European art. The frescoes hang directly opposite the windows that look down into the Campo. The men who voted in that chamber could see, on one wall, the city they were paid to build, and through the window, the city as it actually was.

What stays from Siena is that the medieval city kept working as a medieval city. The brick is the same brick. The contrade are the same contrade. The horses still come.

Chapter 05 · the story

Brunelleschi's dome over Santa Maria del Fiore spans 45.5 metres of unsupported octagonal terracotta — the largest masonry dome ever built — and the man who designed it had no formal training as an architect and refused to tell anyone how it was going to stand up.

The cathedral had been waiting for its dome for over a century. The walls of Arnolfo di Cambio’s nave were finished in 1380. The drum to take the dome was raised by 1418. Nobody knew how to close it. The opening was forty-five metres across, the largest since the Pantheon thirteen centuries earlier, and the Roman formwork techniques — wooden centring under a poured concrete shell — required timber that no Tuscan forest could supply. The 1418 design competition was won by Filippo Brunelleschi, a goldsmith who had spent the previous twenty years measuring Roman ruins and would not show his drawings. He built the dome without centring. Two shells, an inner and an outer, locked together by a herringbone-pattern brick bond that climbed in self-supporting rings. Four million bricks, sixteen years of construction, no scaffolding crossing the gap below the workers. The dome was closed in 1436. It is still standing.

Vasari painted the inside of the dome with the Last Judgment in the 1570s. The climb to the lantern goes up between the two shells — 463 steps, the inner brickwork visible the whole way, the herringbone running diagonally past at arm’s length — and emerges on the marble balcony at the apex into a view of the city’s red-tile roofs reaching to Fiesole. Down in Piazza del Duomo, Ghiberti’s bronze east doors of the Baptistery, the ones Michelangelo called the Gates of Paradise, took twenty-seven years to cast. The originals are in the Museo dell’Opera now, the doors on the building are copies, but the cast bronze panels of the originals — Jacob and Esau in deep perspective, the columns receding into the metal — are the moment European sculpture taught itself the same thing painting was teaching itself across the river at the Brancacci Chapel: how to fool the eye into seeing a room that is not there.

What stays from Florence is that an entire grammar — perspective, proportion, the human body as a measure — got worked out inside a square mile in three generations, and the buildings that taught it are still the buildings on the street.

Chapter 06 · the story

The Leaning Tower is 56 metres of white Carrara marble standing 4 degrees off vertical on alluvial clay that gave way during construction in 1178. It has been falling over for eight hundred and fifty years and they have not yet let it.

The tower started leaning before the third storey was finished. The foundation, three metres deep into Pisan clay and silt, settled unevenly almost as soon as the load came on, and the masons — recognising the problem somewhere around 1178 — stopped work for the better part of a century. When construction resumed under Giovanni di Simone in 1272 the upper storeys were built with a curve in them, the columns on the south side cut shorter than those on the north, so the tower bends slightly back towards plumb as it climbs. It still does not reach it. The bell chamber at the top, finished in 1372, is angled at four degrees from vertical and the apex hangs four metres out from the base. Galileo is said to have dropped a cannonball and a musket ball from the top in 1589 to test whether mass affected the rate of fall. He probably did not. But the building is the right shape for the story.

The tilt got worse through the twentieth century. By 1990 the tower was leaning at 5.5 degrees and closing on the angle at which it would simply topple. The Italian government closed it. An international commission spent ten years extracting clay from the high side of the foundation with vacuum drills — seventy tonnes of it, a half-cubic-metre slice at a time — so the building could settle gently back the way it had come. The lean was reduced by 44 centimetres. It opened again in 2001. The current four degrees is expected to hold for at least three hundred years.

The Campo dei Miracoli — Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto, Tower — is laid out on a wide green lawn outside the city walls, deliberately separate from the medieval town, four pale buildings in marble standing on grass like something arranged. The acoustic demonstration in the Baptistery on the half hour is six seconds of reverb under the dome, a single sung note travelling all the way around and coming back overlapped with itself. The flight east leaves the next afternoon.

Final morning on the Campo dei Miracoli, the marble of the Camposanto catching low Tyrrhenian light. A panino with mortadella from the station bar, an espresso standing up, the Frecciarossa back through Tuscan green to Fiumicino.
