Finland · the aurora winter
A two-flight, three-base loop of Finnish Lapland · nine nights, solo, late-February dark season. Helsinki for two nights at the start — Senate Square and the white Helsinki Cathedral, Allas Sea Pool sauna on the harbour, Suomenlinna sea fortress ferry, Kauppatori salmon soup at lunch, Temppeliaukio rock-carved church, Oodi central library. Finnair domestic 75 min north to Rovaniemi for two nights — Santa Claus Village on the 66°33’ Arctic Circle, husky-sled run for 30 min on forest tracks, Arktikum museum, the Lordi Square reindeer-burger. VR overnight or Finnair flight further north to Ivalo + transfer to Inari for three nights — Siida (Sámi cultural centre and Lapland nature museum), snow-mobile night aurora chase, reindeer-sleigh through birch forest on a frozen lake, Pielpajärvi Wilderness Church at the end of a 6 km ski trail. South to Kakslauttanen for two nights in a glass-roof igloo — the sky over your head when the lights are out, aurora forecast app on the bedside, the Christmas Cottage breakfast. Direct flight Ivalo → Helsinki for the long-haul south.
Wheels down at Helsinki-Vantaa. Then the long Arctic dark.
Out of Hong Kong on a Wednesday, Helsinki by Thursday morning — Finnair direct over Siberia, the polar projection slowly turning out the window. Nine nights ahead north of the Arctic Circle — two in Helsinki for the Senate Square white cathedral and the Allas Sea Pool sauna at -10 °C, two at Rovaniemi for the Santa Claus Village on the 66°33'' line and the husky-sled run on snowy forest tracks, three at Inari deeper north for the Sámi cultural centre, the snowmobile night chase for aurora, and a reindeer-sleigh through frozen lake birch forest, and two final nights at Kakslauttanen for the glass igloo with the sky overhead. The Aurora forecast is the planning artefact · chase the dark cold clear nights.
