Wheels down at Helsinki-Vantaa. Then the long Arctic dark.

Out of Hong Kong on a Wednesday, Helsinki by Thursday morning — Finnair direct over Siberia, the polar projection slowly turning out the window. Nine nights ahead north of the Arctic Circle — two in Helsinki for the Senate Square white cathedral and the Allas Sea Pool sauna at -10 °C, two at Rovaniemi for the Santa Claus Village on the 66°33'' line and the husky-sled run on snowy forest tracks, three at Inari deeper north for the Sámi cultural centre, the snowmobile night chase for aurora, and a reindeer-sleigh through frozen lake birch forest, and two final nights at Kakslauttanen for the glass igloo with the sky overhead. Chapter 01 · the story

At 60.17°N the February sun rises at nine and sets before five. The Senate Square cathedral is white on a white sky on a white square, and the city has decided this is fine. The sauna is non-negotiable. Everyone takes one. The Prime Minister takes one.

The train from Vantaa runs underground for the last stop and delivers you, with no ceremony, into a Helsinki that is dim and salted and so quiet the tram bells sound rude. The Esplanadi has been swept down to the granite. The Marimekko window is lit. The Stockmann clock at the corner says minus seven. By the time the coffee at Ekberg is in front of you the light outside has turned that specific Baltic blue that the design district has been trying to put on rugs since 1951.

The rule is that everyone takes a sauna. Not as a tourist exercise — as a civic baseline. There are an estimated three million saunas in a country of five and a half million people. Löyly on Hernesaarenranta, the cedar-clad public sauna on the water, is the way in if you have one evening: 80 °C in the smoke room until your face stops working, then through the door in a towel and down the wooden ladder into the Baltic, which in February is minus two and ice on the surface. You do not gasp. You count to ten. You climb out. You do it twice more. By the third round the cold is no longer cold; it is information.

At the Senate Square the Lutheran cathedral of 1852 sits at the top of its broad granite stair, neoclassical and white and unfussy. Alexander II in bronze in the middle. Across the square the University library. Around the corner the Government Palace. A capital arranged with the same minimalism the design district sells on shelves — Aalto’s stool, Iittala’s tumbler, Marimekko’s poppy — as if the country has been quietly insisting for a century that a thing should do its job and stop talking.

What Helsinki gives, before the trip moves north, is the register. Cold is not punishment. Quiet is not absence. The salmon soup at the harbour cabin comes with rye and butter and one chive, and that is the whole bowl, and it is enough.

Chapter 02 · the story

The Arctic Circle is a real line at 66°33′ and a painted one across a courtyard in a village outside town, and Rovaniemi has decided to monetise the second without diminishing the first. The huskies, once they start running, go silent.

The Finnair turboprop from Helsinki lands seventy-five minutes later at Rovaniemi and the temperature on the gate display reads minus eighteen. The town centre was firebombed flat by the retreating Wehrmacht in 1944 and rebuilt to a 1950 Alvar Aalto plan in the shape — visible only from the air — of a reindeer’s head. Lordi Square is the eye. The river the Ounasjoki meets the Kemijoki at the western edge and the Arktikum’s long glass tube points the rest of the way north toward the pole.

The Arctic Circle, the actual one, drifts by about fifteen metres a year because the planet wobbles. Santa Claus Village ten kilometres outside town has painted the 66°33′ line across its courtyard and put a post office on top of it where the postmark is, by commercial register, the official Santa Claus return address. You can cross the line, take the photograph, buy a postcard, and pretend the whole apparatus is for the children. Some of it is. Some of it is for the adults who needed permission.

The huskies are the part that is not for show. Six Alaskan-Siberian crossbreeds in harness, the lead dog up front, the team howling in the kennel and then — the second the brake comes off the sled — nothing. They run silent. The forest track is groomed snow between birch trunks and the only sound for thirty minutes is the runners on the surface and your own breathing under the balaclava. The musher at the back stage-whispers gee for a right turn. The dogs change line. No bark, no acknowledgement. Pure locomotion.

What stays from Rovaniemi is the doubling. A line that is real and a line that is painted. A town rebuilt twice — once by the war, once by Aalto. A team of dogs that howl when stopped and go quiet when moving. The Arctic Circle is exactly where it says it is, and also somewhere else.

Inari · Sámi country

Three nights deeper north in Sámi homeland. Inari is the cultural capital of Finnish Sámi country and the third-largest lake in Finland is frozen solid in early March.

Chapter 03 · the story

Inari is the cultural capital of the Finnish Sámi and the lake is the third largest in the country and frozen a metre thick in March. The Siida museum tells the story in three languages and one of them — Sámi — is the one that belongs to the land.

The road from Ivalo runs forty minutes north along the Juutuanjoki through pine forest and emerges at the lakeside village of Inari, population around five hundred, with the Sajos Sámi parliament building — the wooden 2012 hall designed by Halo Architects — standing low on the river. The kp-index app on the phone says 4 for tonight, which is good. The thermometer outside the konditoria says minus twenty-six, which is also good: clear skies, hard cold, no cloud cover. Aurora needs both.

The Siida cultural centre has been the keeping place for the Finnish Sámi since 1998. The permanent exhibition walks the year in eight Sámi seasons — not four, eight — and the names of those seasons in North Sámi are on the wall: giđđa, giđđageassi, geassi, čakčageassi, čakča, čakčadálvi, dálvi, giđđadálvi. Spring, spring-summer, summer, autumn-summer, autumn, autumn-winter, winter, spring-winter. A calendar shaped by the reindeer and not the Gregorian Pope. The displays of the gákti — the traditional dress, each pattern tied to a specific family region — say plainly that this is not folklore. This is now.

At twenty-two-thirty the snowmobile guide stops the engines in a clearing of frozen lake and points east-northeast and the green curtain has already started. It moves the way smoke moves underwater. The Sámi name is guovssahasat — the lights you can hear — and there is a recorded yoik playing low from a speaker in the lavvu tent behind us, the throat-singing tradition that has no fixed melody and improvises around the subject of the song. The aurora is the subject. The yoik catches up.

What Inari offers, that Rovaniemi cannot, is the sense that the land has its own owners and they are still here.

The thermal glass is heated to keep the snow off. Inside the igloo it is eighteen degrees. Outside it is minus twenty-eight. The aurora, if it comes, comes through the ceiling, and the bed is angled so you do not have to sit up to watch it.

The drive south from Inari is forty-five minutes along Route 4 through Saariselkä pine forest and the property appears as a cluster of low log buildings around a Christmas Cottage that is, by stated intention, open for breakfast every day of the year. Thirty-six glass igloos sit in their own clearing in the trees, each one a domed thermal-glass shell on a low log base, spaced far enough apart that the neighbour’s lamp does not bleed in. The east-side igloos face the dawn and the most reliable aurora arc. The west-side igloos face the daytime forest. The first question at check-in is which side.

The thermal glass is the trick. It is heated electrically along fine wires in the laminate so the snow melts off and the frost does not form on the inside. The igloo holds steady at about eighteen degrees while the outdoor reading at the Christmas Cottage thermometer is minus twenty-eight. The bed is angled northward, pillow under the apex of the dome, blackout curtain on a runner so it can be drawn shut for an afternoon nap. At twenty-three-fourteen the aurora alarm on the bedside clock — yes, that is included — goes off because the resort’s kp-index feed has crossed the threshold for the night, and a green ribbon is already running east to west across the dome.

The smoke sauna is across the snowpath, a low blackened log building heated for six hours before service to about seventy degrees of dense, dry, soft heat. The protocol is: in for fifteen minutes, out through the door to the cut hole in the lake ice, down the ladder, count to ten, climb out, walk back. Repeat three times. The Finnish term for the post-sauna calm is löylyn jälkeen — after the steam — and on the third round, snow falling, igloo lamps in the trees, the aurora still breaking faintly in the north, you understand the whole country has been arranged around this exact thirty seconds.

Mar 6 · Day 10 · the last one

Last sauna at Allas. Then the flight home.

Final evening at the Allas Sea Pool by the Helsinki harbour — 80 °C smoke sauna, then ice-water plunge in the seawater pool at -2 °C, repeat three times until the brain calms. Last salmon-soup at the Kauppatori market, train to Helsinki-Vantaa at dawn, Finnair AY69 south at 9 a.m. Hong Kong by midnight. Nine nights — two through Helsinki''s white Senate Square, two at Rovaniemi for husky teams and Santa''s post office, three at Inari for Sámi reindeer and snow-mobile aurora chase, two under the glass igloo at Kakslauttanen with the curtain breaking green above. The salmiakki and the karjalanpiirakka and the long dark already half-remembered.
