Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday morning, Kuala Lumpur by Saturday afternoon — Cathay or AirAsia, four hours south. Eight nights ahead across two Malaysias — two in KL for the Petronas Twin Towers and the night markets, three in Penang for the Georgetown UNESCO shophouses and the legendary hawker food, three on the Borneo side at Sepilok for the orangutans and the proboscis monkeys of the Kinabatangan river. The Indian-Ocean monsoon has eased; on the South-China-Sea side of the country August is the cusp before September haze season. Two countries in one passport — peninsular Muslim-Malay Malaysia and East Malaysia on Borneo, where the indigenous Dayak peoples make up the majority and the rainforest is 140 million years old.
