Six nights through Montenegro at the spring cusp · solo · rental car from Podgorica airport. Three nights in Kotor — the medieval walled town in the bend of the Bay of Kotor (UNESCO since 1979), ascent up the 1,350-step San Giovanni Fortress city walls (260 m above the town), Saint Tryphon Cathedral (1166), Maritime Museum of Montenegro, Perast village (15 min north, with the two artificial islands), boat to Our Lady of the Rocks (the 1452 artificial island church built on a pile of sunken ships), and the entire Bay of Kotor fjord drive. One night in Budva — the medieval walled Old Town, Sveti Stefan (the 15th-century fishing village turned luxury island resort, viewable but not enterable), Mogren beach, Jaz beach. Drive north into the mountains for two final nights in Durmitor National Park — the Black Lake (Crno Jezero) under Bobotov Kuk peak (2,523 m), Tara River Canyon (1,300 m deep, second-deepest after Grand Canyon), Durdevica Tara Bridge (172 m above the canyon), Žabljak village, Lovćen mausoleum side-trip (the Petar II Petrović-Njegoš mausoleum at 1,657 m, the symbolic centre of Montenegro) before the drive back to Podgorica for the long flight home.
Wheels down at Podgorica. Then six nights along the fjord and the mountains.
Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Podgorica by Saturday afternoon via Istanbul — Turkish, fifteen hours all in. Six nights ahead through Montenegro — three at the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska, Europe''s southernmost fjord, UNESCO since 1979) for the medieval walled town and the ascent to the San Giovanni Fortress, one on the Budva Riviera for the Sveti Stefan island-resort silhouette, two in the Durmitor Mountains for the Black Lake + Tara River Canyon + the high alpine plateau. Late May is the cusp — daytime 24 °C on the coast, 16 °C at altitude, the Mediterranean still cool but warming, the alpine wildflowers at their peak in Durmitor, and the Bay of Kotor cruise crowds haven''t fully arrived yet.
