Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Podgorica by Saturday afternoon via Istanbul — Turkish, fifteen hours all in. Six nights ahead through Montenegro — three at the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska, Europe''s southernmost fjord, UNESCO since 1979) for the medieval walled town and the ascent to the San Giovanni Fortress, one on the Budva Riviera for the Sveti Stefan island-resort silhouette, two in the Durmitor Mountains for the Black Lake + Tara River Canyon + the high alpine plateau. Late May is the cusp — daytime 24 °C on the coast, 16 °C at altitude, the Mediterranean still cool but warming, the alpine wildflowers at their peak in Durmitor, and the Bay of Kotor cruise crowds haven''t fully arrived yet.

Chapter 01 · the story

The Bay of Kotor is the southernmost fjord-like inlet in Europe, and the old town sits at the back of it inside Venetian walls. At dawn the 1,355 steps up to San Giovanni are empty. By ten, four cruise ships have unloaded and the lanes are full.

The walls start at sea level and zigzag up the limestone face behind the town. There are 1,355 steps cut into the rock between the Sea Gate and the fortress of San Giovanni at the top, 260 m up, and the only way to have them to yourself is to start before sunrise. By six the bay below is still glass. By seven the first cruise ship is inching past Verige strait. By ten the lanes inside the walls are shoulder-to-shoulder and the climb is a slow queue of sunburn.

Kotor has been a Venetian town, a Habsburg town, a Yugoslav town, and now a Montenegrin town, and the walls were built by all of them in turn — the inscriptions on the lower stones are still in Latin and the upper ones in Cirilica. Saint Tryphon’s cathedral is from 1166. The reliquaries inside are silver and gold and the saint’s skull is on a velvet cushion behind glass.

The bay itself is not technically a fjord — it is a ria, a drowned river canyon — but the geometry is the same: two narrow inlets opening into a wider basin, mountains rising 1,700 m straight from the water on three sides. The road around it is a hundred kilometres and changes character at every village. Perast is Venetian stone; Risan is Roman mosaic; Herceg Novi is Ottoman fountain.

The Cats Museum is in a small palazzo on the seafront and is mostly postcards and a donation jar. The cats themselves are everywhere — the city has been protecting its street cats since the 1900s when they kept the harbour rats down — and they sleep in the sun on the steps of the cathedral. You step around them on the way up to the fortress, and they are still there, in the same patches of sun, when you come back down.

Chapter 02 · the story

Sveti Stefan is a 15th-century fishing village on a small islet tied to the shore by a sand causeway. The fishermen left in the 1950s, the state turned the houses into a luxury hotel in 1960, and now the gate is locked. The silhouette is all anyone has of it.

The islet is fifty metres offshore and the causeway is a thin pale strip of sand. From the viewpoint on the coastal road you see the whole thing in one frame: terracotta roofs stacked up the rock, cypress trees in the gaps, the church of Saint Stephen at the top. It is the postcard of the Adriatic. It has been on every Yugoslav tourist brochure since 1962. Sophia Loren came. Elizabeth Taylor came. Bobby Fischer played Boris Spassky on the island in 1992 and the chess board is still up there somewhere behind the locked gate.

Sveti Stefan was a working fishing village for five hundred years — the stone houses on the rock belonged to families, the church was the parish church, the boats came in onto the sand strip — and then in the 1950s the families were moved off and the state turned the village into a single hotel. Every house became a suite. The cobbled lanes became corridors. In 2007 Aman took the lease and turned the hotel into a forty-suite resort. In 2021 the lease ended in a dispute the courts are still working through. Since then the island has been closed and the silhouette is all anyone has of it.

Budva itself is a different register entirely. The Old Town on the peninsula is genuinely medieval — 9th-century church, 17th-century citadel walls, narrow lanes opening onto small squares — but in July the streets fill with the Riviera party crowd and the klapa singers are drowned out by the clubs along Slovenska Plaža. We are here in June, the week before all of that starts, and the Old Town is mostly Montenegrin families eating sea bass on Trg pjesnika and drinking Crmnica wine from Lake Skadar.

Chapter 03 · the story

The Tara River canyon is 1,300 m deep, the deepest in Europe, and the road from the coast climbs out of the Mediterranean and into a country that looks like Wyoming. At Žabljak the air is thin and cold even in June and the sky has stars again.

The drive from Budva is four hours and changes the entire trip. The coast falls away in the rear-view mirror. The road climbs out of the karst hills, through the river valleys north of Podgorica, and then up onto the Sinjajevina plateau where the trees thin out and the limestone takes over. By the time the road reaches Žabljak the altitude is 1,453 m, the air is twelve degrees cooler than the coast, and the architecture has switched from Venetian stone to log-cabin alpine.

Durmitor is a high massif of forty-eight peaks above 2,000 m and eighteen glacial lakes scattered across the plateau between them. The Black Lake — Crno Jezero — is at 1,416 m and is the postcard image: the limestone peak of Međed reflected in still black water on a calm morning. A three-kilometre loop walks around it. Wild horses graze in the meadow at the south end. The Bobotov Kuk peak at 2,523 m is a five-hour scramble from the Sedlo pass and the summit looks down into the Tara canyon on the far side.

The Tara is the deepest canyon in Europe — 1,300 m from rim to river — and the Đurđevica bridge crosses it on five stone arches at 172 m above the water. The bridge was built in 1940, blown up in 1942 by its own engineer to slow the Italian army, and rebuilt in 1946. The plaque at the south end names the engineer. The river below is class three in spring, gentler by June, and the rafts launch from Splavište at first light. The water is cold and clear enough to drink — Durmitor’s rivers carry the least human input of any river system in Europe, which is the kind of statistic a national park makes a sign about, and which on the water turns out to be the simple fact of the place.

Final lunch at Konoba Catovica Mlini in the Kotor hinterland — cevapi grilled minced-meat skewers, kajmak fresh cream, Vranac red wine from Plantaze, the watermill-converted restaurant atmosphere. Drive back to Podgorica, Turkish via Istanbul east to Hong Kong by next-day evening. Six nights — three on the Bay of Kotor walled town, one on the Budva Riviera, two in the Durmitor mountains. The reflection of Kotor in the fjord and the silhouette of Black Lake already half-remembered.
