Slovenia · the Julian Alps
A small-country loop · nine nights, solo, late-spring shoulder. Ljubljana for two nights at the start — Triple Bridge of Plečnik 1932 over the Ljubljanica, dragon-statue Dragon Bridge, the Castle funicular for the city view, Central Market, struklji rolled cheese dumplings at a city kitchen, Metelkova street-art barracks for a quirky last evening. Drive 30 min to Lake Bohinj for two nights — the quieter alpine lake inside Triglav NP, paddle on flat water, Mostnica gorge walk, Savica waterfall at the head of the valley, hike to Voje Valley. Drive over the Vršič Pass (50 hairpins, 1,611 m) into the Soča Valley for two nights at Bovec — kayaking the turquoise Soča, Boka waterfall, Kobarid (Caporetto) WWI museum and the Italian ossuario, Soča Trout at a riverside konoba. Drive south to Piran for one final night — Venetian-style sea-port, Tartini Square, medieval sea walls, octopus pršut, the last sunset over the Adriatic before the flight east.
Wheels down at Brnik. Then the small green country.
Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday, Ljubljana by Sunday afternoon — a short hop on Lufthansa from Frankfurt into Brnik''s one-runway airport, the Julian Alps already on the windward side. Nine nights ahead across a country smaller than Switzerland — two in Ljubljana for Plečnik''s bridges and the Triple Bridge over the Ljubljanica, two at Lake Bled for the island church and the Vintgar Gorge boardwalk, two at Lake Bohinj inside Triglav National Park for the quieter water and the Mostnica gorge, two along the turquoise Soča River for kayaking and the Vršič Pass drive over 1,611 m, and one final night at Piran on the 20 km of Adriatic coast at the country''s only sea exit. The whole loop fits comfortably on a single rental car and 600 km of road · a Switzerland the size of Wales.
