Eight nights through Myanmar at the cool-dry-season cusp · solo · domestic flights between the four bases, no rental car. One night in Yangon — Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset (the 99-m gilded stupa with the 76-carat diamond at its tip), the British-colonial Pansodan Street + the Strand Hotel + Sule Pagoda traffic circle, Bogyoke Aung San Market for lacquerware and longyis, a Burmese set-dinner of laphet thoke + mohinga at Aung Thukha. Fly north to Bagan for three nights — over 2,200 surviving pagodas of the 11th-13th century Pagan empire stretched across a 26 sq mile plain at the bend of the Ayeyarwady, sunrise hot-air-balloon flight over the forest of pagodas at first light, electric-bike laps through the ruins on day two (Ananda Temple, Shwesandaw, Dhammayangyi, Sulamani), sunset from the Bulethi pagoda. Fly north to Mandalay for two nights — U Bein Bridge (1.2-km teak bridge across Taungthaman Lake, the longest teak bridge in the world) at sunset, Mahamuni Buddha (the gold-leaf-encrusted ancient bronze Buddha that pilgrims have been adding to for 250 years), Mingun ferry across the Ayeyarwady, the unfinished 1810 pagoda + the world”s largest intact ringing bell. Fly south to Heho for two final nights on Inle Lake — the floating gardens + the leg-rowing Intha fishermen who balance one-legged on the bow + the Indein pagoda forest of hundreds of crumbling stupas in a single field.
