Eight nights through Myanmar at the cool-dry-season cusp · solo · domestic flights between the four bases, no rental car. One night in Yangon — Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset (the 99-m gilded stupa with the 76-carat diamond at its tip), the British-colonial Pansodan Street + the Strand Hotel + Sule Pagoda traffic circle, Bogyoke Aung San Market for lacquerware and longyis, a Burmese set-dinner of laphet thoke + mohinga at Aung Thukha. Fly north to Bagan for three nights — over 2,200 surviving pagodas of the 11th-13th century Pagan empire stretched across a 26 sq mile plain at the bend of the Ayeyarwady, sunrise hot-air-balloon flight over the forest of pagodas at first light, electric-bike laps through the ruins on day two (Ananda Temple, Shwesandaw, Dhammayangyi, Sulamani), sunset from the Bulethi pagoda. Fly north to Mandalay for two nights — U Bein Bridge (1.2-km teak bridge across Taungthaman Lake, the longest teak bridge in the world) at sunset, Mahamuni Buddha (the gold-leaf-encrusted ancient bronze Buddha that pilgrims have been adding to for 250 years), Mingun ferry across the Ayeyarwady, the unfinished 1810 pagoda + the world”s largest intact ringing bell. Fly south to Heho for two final nights on Inle Lake — the floating gardens + the leg-rowing Intha fishermen who balance one-legged on the bow + the Indein pagoda forest of hundreds of crumbling stupas in a single field. Fly back through Yangon for the long flight home.

Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday morning, Yangon by Saturday evening via Bangkok — Thai Airways through Suvarnabhumi, six hours all in. Eight nights ahead through Myanmar — one in Yangon for Shwedagon Pagoda at dusk and the British-colonial quarter, three at Bagan for the 2,200+ surviving 11th-13th century pagodas of the old Pagan empire and a sunrise hot-air-balloon over the plain, two in Mandalay for the U Bein teak bridge at sunset and the imperial palace, two final nights on Inle Lake for the leg-rowing fishermen and Indein pagoda forest. November is the cusp — dry season has started, daytime 28 °C, nights cool, the haze has not yet returned to the central valley, and the country is finally accessible again.

Final dinner at Aung Thukha in Yangon — Burmese set meal with laphet thoke (fermented-tea-leaf salad), mohinga rice noodles, monk-fish curry, the family-style table of small dishes. Taxi to Mingaladon at midnight, Thai Airways back via Bangkok. Hong Kong by next-day evening. Eight nights — one at the gold of Shwedagon, three at the dawn balloon over Bagan, two on the U Bein bridge silhouettes, two on the Inle leg-rowing canoes. The smell of betel-nut chewers'' red-stained walls and the chime of the Shwedagon roof bells already half-remembered.
