Ghana · the Door of No Return
Seven nights through Ghana at the dry-season cusp · solo · private driver-guide. Two nights in Accra — Independence Square + Black Star Gate, Du Bois Memorial Centre (the W.E.B. Du Bois grave + museum), Jamestown lighthouse + the fishermen, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (the first Ghanaian president”s mausoleum), Makola Market, the Arts Centre for crafts. Drive west 3 hr to Cape Coast for three nights — Cape Coast Castle UNESCO (the 1653 Swedish-built, British-expanded slave-trade castle, the “Door of No Return”), Elmina Castle (the 1482 Portuguese-built castle, the oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa, also slave-trade), Kakum National Park (the 7-bridge 350-m canopy walkway 40 m above the rainforest), Hans Cottage Botel (the crocodile-pond eco-lodge). Drive 4 hr north to Kumasi for two final nights — Manhyia Palace + Museum (the Asantehene “king of the Ashanti” residence + the kingdom history, 1817 founded), Kejetia Central Market (the largest open-air market in West Africa, 10,000+ stalls), Bonwire kente cloth village (the original Ashanti royal kente-cloth weaving), Lake Bosomtwe (Ghana”s only natural lake, a meteorite crater).
Wheels down at Kotoka. Then seven nights down the Gold Coast.
Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Accra by Saturday afternoon via Addis Ababa — Ethiopian Airlines, fifteen hours total. Seven nights ahead through Ghana — two in Accra for the West African capital + Du Bois Centre + Independence Square, three at Cape Coast for the UNESCO Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle (the two main slave-trade departure points to the Americas) + Kakum National Park canopy walkway, two final nights in Kumasi for the Ashanti kingdom capital + Manhyia Palace + Kejetia Market (the largest in West Africa). November is the cusp — the rainy season has ended, daytime 30 °C, the December Harmattan dust haze has not yet arrived, and the Cape Coast slave-trade memorial sites are visitable in clear conditions. Ghana''s "Year of Return" campaign in 2019 invited African-Americans to reconnect with their heritage, and the slave-castle visit has become one of the most emotionally significant experiences in African tourism.
