Seven nights ahead through Sweden — three in Stockholm for the Gamla Stan Old Town and the Vasa Museum and the archipelago, two on Gotland at Visby for the medieval ring wall and the midsummer celebration on the Baltic''s largest island, two final nights in Gothenburg on the west coast for the seafood + the Liseberg amusement park. Late June is the Swedish midsummer cusp — Midsommarafton on June 23 (the second-most-important Swedish holiday after Christmas), 19 hours of daylight at this latitude, the archipelago at peak sailing-season, and the entire country on holiday for the last weekend of school summer.

Chapter 01 · the story

The city is built on fourteen islands, the bridges count fifty-seven, and the most-visited museum holds a warship that sat on the seabed for 333 years before someone thought to look. Sweden keeps its disasters, then puts them under glass.

Stockholm sits across fourteen islands at the seam where Lake Mälaren empties into the Baltic, and the city’s geography is its founding joke: every neighbourhood is a different rock. Gamla Stan is the oldest one, a single medieval island where the painted houses lean together on Stortorget and the alley called Mårten Trotzigs gränd narrows to ninety centimetres. Walk it shoulder-first. Skeppsholmen, the next island over, holds the modern-art museum on what used to be a naval base. Djurgården, royal hunting park, holds the warship.

On 10 August 1628 the Vasa sailed twenty minutes out of Stockholm harbour, heeled in a gust, and sank in the inner roadstead with the royal court watching. Sixty-four bronze cannon, four hundred carved oak figures, the ambition of a Sweden trying to be a Baltic empire, all of it on the bottom in thirty-two metres of water. Then the city forgot. The ship sat in the cold low-salinity mud for three hundred and thirty-three years, the very conditions that would have rotted it anywhere else preserving it instead, until a marine archaeologist named Anders Franzén pulled a core sample with a custom plumb and found black oak. They raised her in 1961.

The hall built around her is dim and cool because daylight would finish what the Baltic started. Ninety-eight per cent of the timber is original. You walk a ramp that spirals up seven storeys and the ship is always the same ship at different heights — the gun deck, the stern with the lion of Sweden in mid-roar, the carved Roman emperors who were supposed to scare the Polish navy. The labels are brief because the ship is the argument.

What sticks about Stockholm is the willingness to keep the thing that went wrong, fish it up, give it a building. The kings get their changing-of-the-guard at 12:15; the disaster gets the warmer room.

Chapter 02 · the story

Ninety-two medieval stone churches stand on Gotland, one for every parish on an island of fifty-nine thousand people. They are the proof of a century when this rock in the Baltic was rich. Then the plague came, the trade routes moved, and the churches stayed.

The ferry from Nynäshamn takes three hours across open Baltic, and Gotland rises out of it as a flat limestone shelf — a hundred and seventy-six kilometres long, no real hills, the cliffs at Hoburgen the only edge that announces itself. The first thing visible from the sea is the Visby ring wall: three and a half kilometres of thirteenth-century masonry with forty-four surviving towers, the most complete medieval town wall north of the Alps. Inside, the streets are crooked and the houses are timber, and twelve church ruins stand roofless among them like a question nobody answered.

The answer is on the rest of the island. Gotland has ninety-two medieval ringkirka — stone parish churches built between roughly 1150 and 1350, when this island was the richest waypoint on the Hanseatic trade route running from Novgorod to Lübeck. Every parish of any size built one. They are heavy and small and decorated, with limestone fonts carved by a workshop called Master Sigraf and paintings of the wheel of fortune fading on the plaster. Drive north toward Bunge or south toward Linde and you pass one every few kilometres, white-walled, the door usually unlocked.

Then in 1361 a Danish army under Valdemar IV landed on the west coast and killed two thousand farmers outside the Visby walls in a single afternoon. The town surrendered. The Hansa moved its business elsewhere. The plague came twice. The churches, which had been built for parishes that were about to halve, never got replaced — there was no money to rebuild and no fashion to demolish, so the twelfth century stayed standing. The whole island became a museum nobody curated.

Midsommarafton on June 23 — the maypole, the herring and new potatoes, the flower-crown wreath — happens on the village green beside whichever ringkirka the parish still uses. The ruins watch from a hundred metres away.

Gothenburg speaks a Sweden that Stockholm doesn't. The vowels are longer, the harbour is open to the Atlantic via the Kattegat, the fish market is shaped like a church, and the cinnamon bun is the point of fika, not a souvenir.

The SJ X2000 from Stockholm runs three hours west across the Götaland plain and arrives at Centralstation in a different register of Sweden. Stockholm is east-facing, Baltic, capital, court. Gothenburg — Sweden’s second city, founded 1621 by Gustav II Adolf with Dutch engineers digging the canals — is west-facing, North Sea, working port, the home of Volvo and SKF and the cargo quay that handles a third of Swedish foreign trade. The accent slows. The kanelbulle gets bigger. Locals call themselves göteborgare with a soft initial y.

Feskekôrka is the joke of the harbour. Built 1874, the fish market hall is shaped like a Gothic church — pointed windows, steep gables, a Lutheran severity to the brick — and inside it sells the morning’s catch from the Kattegat: hand-peeled shrimp by the kilo, langoustines, the small flat oysters, the smoked mackerel that is the standing-bar lunch with a slice of dark rye. The locals call it the fish church without irony. You eat at a counter looking at a herring under a pointed arch.

Across the canal, Haga is the seventeenth-century working-class district that survived the great fires that took the rest of central Gothenburg. The wooden two-storey landshövdingehus still line Haga Nygata, painted ochre and falu red, the cafes inside them serving a hagabulle the size of a small dinner plate. Fika is not a coffee break here so much as a thirty-minute parking of the day.

Liseberg, on the south side of the river, is the largest amusement park in Scandinavia and feels like a city park that grew rides — wooden boardwalks, a 1923-vintage rose garden, the Valkyria coaster now anchoring the skyline. Families come in shifts after work. The Volvo museum is east of town. The trams are 1960s rolling stock and they still rattle.

Final morning at Vete-Katten in Stockholm — kanelbulle (the Swedish cinnamon bun, more substantial than the American version) and a strong filter coffee in the 1928 mahogany- panelled konditori. Arlanda Express to ARN, Cathay east to Hong Kong by Saturday morning. Seven nights — three in the Stockholm Gamla Stan, two on the Gotland ring wall at Visby, two on the Gothenburg west coast. The sound of Swedish midsummer and the silhouette of Visby walls already half-remembered.
