Three nights in Stockholm — Gamla Stan (the medieval Old Town on Stadsholmen island), Vasa Museum (the 1628 warship preserved after 333 years on the seabed, the only near-fully-intact 17th-century ship in the world), the Royal Palace + the Changing of the Guard at 12:15pm, ABBA Museum on Djurgården, Skansen open-air museum (the world”s oldest open-air museum, 1891), Stockholm City Hall + the Golden Hall (where the Nobel banquet is held in December), 1-hour archipelago boat to Vaxholm, and the Midsommarafton celebration on Skansen with the maypole + folk dancing. Ferry south to Visby on Gotland for two nights — the complete 13th-century medieval ring wall (3.4 km, 44 towers), the Hanseatic-League-era ruins of 12 medieval churches within the wall, Saint Mary”s Cathedral, the limestone Almedalen park, the medieval-week festival in August (NOT June, but worth knowing). Ferry + train to Gothenburg for two final nights — the 17th-century canal-grid Old Town built by the Dutch, the seafood at the Feskekôrka “fish church” market hall, Liseberg amusement park, the Saltholmen archipelago ferries to the car-free islands, and the train back to Arlanda for the flight home.

Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Stockholm by Saturday morning — Cathay direct (resumed 2024), eleven hours over the Pole. Seven nights ahead through Sweden — three in Stockholm for the Gamla Stan Old Town and the Vasa Museum and the archipelago, two on Gotland at Visby for the medieval ring wall and the midsummer celebration on the Baltic''s largest island, two final nights in Gothenburg on the west coast for the seafood + the Liseberg amusement park. Late June is the Swedish midsummer cusp — Midsommarafton on June 23 (the second-most-important Swedish holiday after Christmas), 19 hours of daylight at this latitude, the archipelago at peak sailing-season, and the entire country on holiday for the last weekend of school summer.

Final morning at Vete-Katten in Stockholm — kanelbulle (the Swedish cinnamon bun, more substantial than the American version) and a strong filter coffee in the 1928 mahogany- panelled konditori. Arlanda Express to ARN, Cathay east to Hong Kong by Saturday morning. Seven nights — three in the Stockholm Gamla Stan, two on the Gotland ring wall at Visby, two on the Gothenburg west coast. The sound of Swedish midsummer and the silhouette of Visby walls already half-remembered.
