Chapter 01 · the story

At 5:40 the Reuss runs glass-green under the Kapellbrücke and no one is on the bridge yet. The painted panels in the gable triangles are six hundred years of plague and saints, and the river under your feet drains the entire spine of the Alps.

The first morning of the trip begins on the wrong side of the clock. You wake at five because the body still thinks it is noon in Hong Kong, and that is exactly the right hour to be at the river. The Kapellbrücke is empty. The water under it is the colour of celadon — the Reuss is glacier-fed, draining the Vierwaldstättersee and the Engelberg snowfields and, eventually, every drop that ever fell on the Gotthard. It runs fast and clear. You can see the pebbles on the bed two metres down.

The bridge was built in 1333 and the painted panels in the gable triangles went up later, one hundred and twenty pictures of city history and saints’ lives. A third of them burned in 1993. The replacements are honest about being replacements — the soot-darkened originals hang next to the bright newer ones, and the bridge does not pretend the fire didn’t happen. Somewhere in the same hour, the swans drift through from the lake-mouth, indifferent to all of it.

By seven the cog railway up Pilatus is loading at Alpnachstad. The 48% gradient is the steepest in the world and the carriage tips back on its haunches like a horse refusing a fence. At the top, on a clear day, you can see eight cantons and the Bernese Oberland in a single arc. On a bad day you see cloud and pay for the privilege. The mountain decides.

What stays after Lucerne is the river. The Reuss runs the entire nine days under everything — under the Glacier Express viaducts, through the Bernina valleys, down the south face into the Ticino — and the city at its elbow is, more than anything, a place that remembers what the water is doing.

Zermatt · under the Matterhorn

Three nights in the car-free village under the most photographed mountain in the world. Gornergrat at sunrise on day one, the Five Lakes traverse on day two, Klein Matterhorn or Schwarzsee on day three depending on cloud.

Chapter 02 · the story

At Rotenboden the cog stops one halt below the summit and you walk twenty minutes down to Riffelsee. The lake is the size of a swimming pool. The Matterhorn lands in it upside down — the same cathedral mountain, copied perfectly, twice.

You come for the reflection. Everything else at Zermatt is consolation prize. The trick is that Riffelsee — the small alpine pool at 2,757 m that turns the Matterhorn into a mirror image — only works before the wind comes up, which means before ten in the morning, which means catching the 6:24 cog from the village. The carriage climbs through pine forest into open meadow and the meadow falls away into rock, and at Rotenboden you step off into thin cold air with the Monte Rosa massif on the left and the entire Gornergletscher sweeping down behind you in a frozen river.

The path to the lake is twenty minutes downhill on a gravel track. You arrive and there are already six other people, all silent, all with cameras on tripods, all waiting for the exact instant the surface goes still. It does, around 7:15. The Matterhorn lands in the water inverted — the same impossible east face, the same north ridge sharp as a fishhook — and for ninety seconds the lake holds two mountains. Then a single fish moves, or the wind shifts, and the second mountain breaks into pieces.

Back in the village the cars do not exist. Zermatt has been combustion-engine-free since 1947 and the silence is the second thing you notice after the mountain. The taxis are electric golf-carts. The shopping street is paved in stone. The porter from the hotel meets you at the platform with a hand-cart because every hotel still does that — it is not a heritage performance, it is just the way luggage moves here.

What you bring back from Zermatt is the duplication. One mountain, copied. The thing itself and the picture of the thing, held in the same lake for as long as the air stays still enough to hold them.

Chapter 03 · the story

Eight hours from Zermatt and the light has changed. The Engadin sits at 1,800 m on a high plateau and the air comes out blue — a cold dry mountain blue that the painter Segantini chased for forty years and never quite caught.

The Glacier Express is not fast. That is the point. Eight hours of panoramic carriage from Zermatt to St Moritz — 291 bridges, 91 tunnels, the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 m, a three-course lunch served at the seat with the Landwasser viaduct curling under the wheels at exactly the right moment. You eat veal and Älplermagronen off a linen-covered tray while the Rhine springs out of a rockface somewhere below Disentis. The carriage tilts on the cog sections. The wine in the glass slants and rights itself.

You step off at St Moritz at 17:45 and the light is different. This is the Engadin — a long high plateau at 1,800 metres along the Inn valley, the river that eventually runs east through Innsbruck and ends in the Danube — and the air is dry the way desert air is dry, but cold. The lakes are the colour of mineral silt, somewhere between green and milk. Giovanni Segantini lived and worked here from 1894 until he died of peritonitis on the Schafberg in 1899, painting the same light over and over and never finishing his great alpine triptych. La Vita, La Natura, La Morte. Two of the three panels are in the museum on the hill. The third is unfinished, propped on the easel he was still painting from.

The next morning the Bernina line goes south. The Rhaetian Railway is UNESCO and the carriages are red and small. Thirty minutes from St Moritz the train arrives at Diavolezza and the cable car climbs to 2,978 m, and from the top you stand above the Persgletscher with Piz Bernina at 4,049 m to the south and the Morteratsch valley falling away beneath your boots. Glaciers do not photograph well. The eye sees what the camera can’t.

What stays after the Engadin is the colour. The lakes hold a green that has no equivalent further west — glacier milk over alpine mineral, refracted through air thin enough to change the spectrum itself.

Chapter 04 · Jul 11–12 Days 8–9

Lugano · the Italian Swiss

Two final nights on the south side of the Alps. The Italian-speaking canton with palms on the lakefront, a funicular up Monte Brè, a steamer to Gandria, and (if there's time) a half-day across the border to Lake Como.

Chapter 04 · the story

The train comes out of the Gotthard tunnel and the language has changed. Signs in Italian. Palms on the platform. The same country, the same currency, but the air smells of oleander and lake water instead of pine.

The Bernina Express drops south through Tirano and the regional connection threads west along the Italian-speaking valleys to Lugano, and somewhere around Bellinzona the trip becomes a different trip. The pines give way to chestnut. The signs go from Ausgang to uscita. Stone houses turn ochre. The lake when it appears is not glacier-blue but Mediterranean — a deeper saturated green-blue that holds the heat of the day. Lugano sits on the north shore at the foot of Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore, two steep hills that the city climbs without apology.

The first morning, the funicular up Monte Brè runs from 8:15. Two minutes to the upper station, six francs with the pass, and you step out at 925 m with the lake unrolling below and the snowline of the Bernese Alps visible to the north on a clear day. The cafe at the top serves espresso the way Italians serve it — short, strong, no apology, no cup of water. You drink it standing at the counter because that’s how it’s done. Down on the Lungolago the palms are real palms, the magnolias in Parco Ciani are real magnolias, and the lake-steamer to Gandria leaves the central pier at 10:35.

Gandria has no road. The village is built into the cliff above the lake and the only way in is the boat. The houses are stacked vertically — stone stairs between them instead of streets — and a grotto on the waterfront serves polenta and lake fish under a pergola of wisteria. You eat slowly because the boat back is at 14:20 and there is no reason to be anywhere else.

What you carry out of Lugano is the climate creep. The Alps are still there, still snowcapped to the north, but the south face of the range has been lent to Italy for the afternoon. The country ends here, geologically, before it ends politically.

Last cable car down from Monte Brè. Then the night train to Zurich.

Final morning above Lugano — Monte Brè funicular at sunrise, espresso at the top, the cable car back down through the palms. Lugano to Zurich by Gotthard Base Tunnel, two hours under the spine of the Alps to the city. Late check-in at Zurich airport, Cathay east at midnight, Hong Kong by tomorrow afternoon. Nine nights — every panoramic carriage on time to the second, every cog railway grinding up its slope, the white of the Matterhorn at first light and the green of the Engadin lakes already half-remembered.
