Switzerland · the Glacier Express arc
Nine nights down the Glacier Express arc · solo · half-fare Swiss Travel Pass, four bases, no rental car. Two nights in Lucerne for the Chapel Bridge, a cog railway up Pilatus, the funicular up Rigi, and a lake steamer to Vitznau. Three nights in Zermatt for Gornergrat at sunrise, the Five Lakes traverse, the Riffelsee Matterhorn reflection, Schwarzsee and the Hörnli hut, and (if the weather holds) the Klein Matterhorn glacier paradise at 3,883 m. The Glacier Express on day six — eight hours, 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 m — into St Moritz. Two nights in the Engadin for the Bernina line to Diavolezza, the green-glacier lakes at Pontresina, and a hike from Muottas Muragl. Final two nights in Lugano on the Italian-speaking side for the lake-steamer to Gandria, the Monte Generoso cog railway to the south, and a half-day across the border to Como before the Gotthard Base Tunnel back to Zurich and the long flight home.
Wheels down at Zurich. Then nine nights across the Alps.
Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday night, Zurich by Sunday morning, Lucerne by lunch. Nine nights ahead on Swiss rails — the half-fare travel pass tucked into the front of the wallet, the Glacier Express seat reserved for day five. Two nights at the elbow of Lake Lucerne for Pilatus and Rigi, three under the Matterhorn at Zermatt for Gornergrat at sunrise and the high traverse to Riffelsee, two in the Engadin for the lakes that turn the colour of glacier silt, two final nights in Lugano for the Italian Swiss palms and a side step over the border to Lake Como. Wengen and Grindelwald sit out this trip; the south and east take their turn under the same sky.
