Out of Hong Kong on a Tuesday, Johannesburg by Wednesday morning, Maun on a Cessna Caravan by Wednesday afternoon. August dry season in the Kalahari, the highs at 28 °C and the waterholes drawing every breathing thing for 100 km. Eight nights ahead on a fly-in safari circuit — three at an Okavango Delta tented camp for the mokoro (dug-out canoe) at dawn and the elephant herd crossing the flood-plain channel, two at Moremi Game Reserve for the dry-land leopard and wild-dog territory, two at Chobe National Park for the largest elephant population in Africa (~120,000), and one final day at Victoria Falls just over the Zimbabwe border. Chapter 01 · the story

The water arriving under the mokoro in August fell as rain in the Angolan highlands in January. Five months across 1,000 km of Kalahari sand to reach this papyrus channel, and none of it is on its way to the sea. The Okavango never finds one.

The Cessna 208 banks low over the delta and the floor of the flood-plain comes apart into islands — thousands of them, fig-tree islands ringed by white sand, lechwe visible from 500 ft as moving dots — and then the grass strip is a red-earth line in the green and the pilot puts the Caravan down on it in under 400 metres. The camp Land Cruiser meets the plane. There is no fence around the camp. There is no fence around anywhere.

The mokoro pole is four metres of mokwa wood. The poler stands at the stern and pushes off the channel bed in absolute silence — the dugout cuts through the lily pads without a wake, and the rule is that you do not speak above a whisper because the entire economy of the delta runs on quiet. A reed-frog clicks on a stem six inches from a hand. A red lechwe lifts its head fifty metres off. A hippo grunts from a side channel and the poler stops the boat without being asked.

At 4am the lion’s roar carries eight kilometres across the flood-plain. The science is that the calls travel along a body-low temperature inversion before dawn, but the experience is that the canvas wall between the bed and the dark is sixteen ounces of cotton duck and the sound is inside the tent. Three calls. Then a fourth, fainter, an answer from a different pride further west.

The paradox is that the flood comes in the dry season. The Angolan rain in January reaches Mohembo in May, the panhandle in June, the Maun gauge in August, and so the delta is at its fullest when the rest of southern Africa is at its driest. The animals know the calendar that the water is on. They come from the Kalahari and from the Makgadikgadi and from as far as Hwange to drink at the delta in the months when nothing else has water. A tent on a wooden platform sits in the middle of the reason.

Moremi · leopard and wild dogs

Two nights in the dry-land game reserve adjacent to the Delta. Moremi is where the cats are easier to spot — the mopane woodland gives them less cover and the painted-dog packs hunt at sunrise on the plains.

Chapter 02 · the story

There are perhaps 6,000 African wild dogs left on earth. Moremi has the densest population of them anywhere. A Khwai pack of fourteen, all known to the guides by ear-notch, runs at impala on the floodplain at sunrise and brings one down in under four minutes.

The Cessna lifts off the delta strip and the eastern third of the Okavango rolls underneath in thirty minutes — channels widening, papyrus thinning to mopane scrub, the line where the permanent water ends and the seasonal pans begin. The Moremi airstrip is slightly longer, slightly dustier. The Land Cruiser is open at the sides and the guide drives standing at the wheel because visibility wins. Leopard tracks are on the road within the first kilometre. Lone male, last night, walking away from camp.

The painted dog is the harder animal. The pack rests up in the shade of a single jackalberry tree in the heat of the day — fourteen of them in a heap, ears flicking at flies, breathing shallow — and at 4pm they get up, all at once, with a soft chittering call that the guide says is their hunting handshake. They trot. Then they run. The lead dog locks onto a young impala ram at 200 metres and the rest fan out in a soft horseshoe, and the kill is over in three minutes and forty seconds, by the guide’s watch.

Khwai is the community concession that borders Moremi to the north — the Bayei and Bukakhwe families relocated here in 1963 when the reserve was gazetted, and the village still runs the cattle pans and the elephant-corridor track. Their bush school takes guests for tracking lessons. The kids can read a leopard print sideways at thirty paces and know which way the cat was travelling and how long ago and whether the back paw stepped inside the front, which means it was relaxed.

At Xakanaxa lagoon the permanent water draws the elephant herd at midday. Forty animals. They drink, then bathe, then dust, in that order, every time. The matriarch lifts her trunk and tests the air for the smell of the Cruiser, decides we are not a problem, and turns her back. Permission, in the only currency Moremi trades in.

Chobe · the elephant river

Two nights along the Chobe River, the northern border of Botswana with Namibia and the boundary of the park that has the largest elephant population in Africa (~120,000). The river is the entire point.

Chapter 03 · the story

Botswana has 120,000 elephants. A third of the continent's total. At sunset on the Chobe they come down to the river in herds of eighty, cross the channel to the Namibian sandbar, drink, dust-bathe in red Kalahari sand, and walk back at dusk. Every evening. Every year.

The boat is a flat aluminium skiff and the guide cuts the outboard fifty metres off the channel and lets the current bring it in sideways to the herd. You sit low — water at gunwale height — and the lead cow is eight metres off the bow, ears spread, trunk testing the boat for threat. She decides the boat is not a threat. Eighty animals walk past in single file behind her, calves under mothers’ bellies, the youngest of them no taller than a knee, and the only sound is feet on mud and the soft squelch of the crossing.

Kasane is the gateway town. The lodge is at the four-corners point — the exact place where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe meet at a single coordinate on the Zambezi, the only quadripoint on earth between four sovereign countries, marked by a small concrete buoy that nobody can quite anchor in the right spot because the river keeps shifting. From the deck at sunset the lights of four flags are visible across two kilometres of water.

Linyanti is the other side of the park — the seasonal floodplain that fills from the Kwando system, not the Okavango — and the morning walk is two hours with an armed guide and a tracker who walks ten metres ahead. They carry a .375 H&H. The tracker reads elephant dung by squeezing it between two fingers, judges the freshness by heat, and the rule is single file at five-metre spacing and no speaking. The walk is silent. The bush is loud. Cape turtle-doves, francolin, a lone bushbuck snorting at the edge of the mopane.

The elephant population has tripled since the 1970s — Chobe is the safest range in Africa for the species, the reason being a combination of CITES enforcement, the village patrols, and Botswana’s standing shoot-to-kill order on commercial poachers. The trade-off is fierce arguments at every village waterhole along the boundary. The cows know the boundary. They cross it anyway, every dusk, because the sandbar on the Namibian side has the better grass.

Chapter 04 · the story

The Kololo word is Mosi-oa-Tunya — the smoke that thunders — and from a kilometre back the spray column is visible above the mopane canopy as a vertical white cloud. The sound arrives before the river does. The river is 1.7 km wide, falling 108 m, all at once.

David Livingstone reached the falls on 16 November 1855, gave them the name of his queen, and admitted in his journal that the Kololo name was the better one. The smoke that thunders. The spray column rises 400 metres in flood season, visible from 50 km out, and the sound at the edge of the Eastern Cataract is loud enough that conversation requires shouting. August is the end of high water. The Zimbabwe-side rainbow is at the upstream cataract in the early morning and at the Devil’s Cataract by 11am, on a schedule the rangers post at the gate.

The Zambian side has the dry-season trick. From August through December the eastern lip dries enough to expose a basalt shelf at the very edge of the falls — Livingstone Island — and a natural rock pool sits behind a lip of stone two metres back from the 108-metre drop. You swim across to the lip. The current is gentle because the river has fanned out across the full mile and lost its hurry. You hold onto the rock and look over. There is no railing. There is a guide with a rope. It is the closest a human gets to falling without falling.

The Victoria Falls Bridge was finished in 1905 — Cecil Rhodes wanted the spray to fall on the carriages as they crossed — and the railway still uses it. The bungee operator works from the deck mid-span, 111 metres above the Zambezi, and the cord is South African and the harness is Australian and the operator’s weight chart is calibrated in five-kilogram brackets. The jump is not the point. Standing at the rail watching the river run away into the Batoka Gorge is the point.

The trip ends here, on the gorge rim at the Lookout Café over a last sundowner Mosi lager, the Zimbabwe side at dusk, the smoke column lit pink by the sun behind it. The 1.7 km of curtain is the world’s largest sheet of falling water by combined width and height. There is no good way to be done looking at it.

Aug 12 · Day 9 · the last one

Last sundowner at Vic Falls. Then the flight home.

Final evening at the Lookout Café over Batoka Gorge — a Zambezi sundowner with the Falls spray drifting back over the basalt cliffs at golden hour. Last pap nyama lunch tomorrow, drive Livingstone airport at noon, SAA to Johannesburg + Cathay back to HKG. Hong Kong by morning. Eight nights — three under the Delta''s flood-plain reeds at dawn, two in Moremi''s mopane woodland with the leopard tracks in the dust, two at Chobe''s sunset of 200 elephants crossing the river, one with the Devil''s Pool spray of Vic Falls on the eyeline. The kudu biltong and the bushveld dust and the long radio chatter on the safari frequency already half-remembered.
