Out of Hong Kong on a Tuesday, San José by Wednesday afternoon — a long United routing via SFO + LAX or American via DFW. March in full dry season, the Pacific north arid and the Caribbean side still occasionally wet. Nine nights ahead on a clockwise rental- car loop — two at Arenal for the active conical volcano (last erupted 2010) and Tabacón''s hot springs, two at Monteverde for the cloud forest canopy walk and the hummingbird gallery, two at Manuel Antonio for the Pacific beach + monkey reserve, two on the Osa Peninsula for the Corcovado primary rainforest and the macaw flock, and one final night back in San José for the morning flight north. Chapter 01 · the story

The cone rises 1,670 m off the plain in a single uninterrupted triangle, geometry too clean to be accidental. It went quiet in 2010 after forty-two years of throwing lava. The town below still calls it active, because the ground does.

On 29 July 1968, at 7:30 in the morning, the west flank of what people in the valley still called Cerro Arenal — a quiet forested hill — opened along a fissure and threw pyroclastic flow over the village of Tabacón. Eighty-seven people died. The mountain that had been a hill the day before was now, demonstrably, a volcano. It kept erupting on a near-daily schedule for the next forty-two years. Then on 6 December 2010 it stopped. Geologists call the current state resting. Nobody in La Fortuna uses that word.

The town sits four kilometres east of the cone in its rain shadow, a single grid of streets around a small park with a church and a soda. From the parque you look up at the volcano whenever the cloud lifts. The 1968 trail in the national park crosses the cooled basalt of the flow that buried Tabacón — black rubble the size of armchairs and refrigerators, still loose underfoot fifty-nine years on, with the cinder pressing through your boot soles warm in the afternoon sun. The forest is coming back through the cracks: cecropia, balsa, the long ferns first.

At Tabacón Hot Springs the water arrives at 38–40°C from a river fed by aquifers heated by the magma chamber still sitting a few kilometres beneath the mountain. The resort has terraced the river into a sequence of pools, the hottest at the top, each spilling down through palms strung with fairy lights. You sit chest-deep at dusk with a Pilsen and watch the cone go from green to grey to black against the last orange. The water you are sitting in came out of the same heat that came out, sideways, in 1968.

The hanging-bridges trail at Mistico crosses sixteen suspension spans through primary rainforest at canopy height. Howler monkeys wake you at the fourth bridge with a sound somewhere between a diesel engine and the end of the world. A three-toed sloth in the crook of a guarumo eats one almond leaf per minute and breathes four times. The cone is behind you the whole walk, framed through the trees, doing nothing visible, doing everything.

Chapter 02 · the story

The cloud sits at 1,440 m and does not move. It is the forest's weather and also its plumbing — water condensing on every leaf, dripping from every epiphyte, sustaining a biome that exists in the gap between two oceans of air.

A group of Alabama Quakers fleeing the 1950 US draft bought 1,400 hectares of cattle land on the Tilarán ridge in 1951 and set aside the top third — the wet, useless part where the cloud lived — as a watershed reserve. Forty-one of them came. They built a dairy, made cheese, learned Spanish, and left the cloud forest standing. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve as it exists today, 14,200 hectares of protected primary forest, grew outward from that original Quaker decision to leave a piece of land alone.

The canopy walkway at Selvatura is eight suspension bridges strung between platforms at fifty metres, three kilometres end to end. You walk through the cloud rather than under it. Bromeliads hang from every fork in every branch, each one a small reservoir of standing water with its own population of frogs and mosquito larvae and beetles. The visibility on the walkway changes every ninety seconds: a curtain of mist comes through, the next bridge disappears, you stand still until the air thins again. The sound is constant slow dripping and one of three hundred bird species being too far off to identify.

At the hummingbird gallery by the reserve entrance, nine species feed at sugar-water stations hung from a covered patio. The violet sabrewing weighs eleven grams, beats its wings sixty times a second, and hovers at face level for as long as it takes to drain a feeder port. The magenta-throated woodstar is smaller than a thumb. They show no fear because the gallery is old enough that the population has, in some functional sense, grown up around it. You stand in the middle of the patio and forget to breathe.

The night walk leaves at six. Headlamps off, the guide finds an orange-kneed tarantula by the cool reflection of her eyes in red light, the size of a saucer at the mouth of her burrow. Forty metres on, a red-eyed tree frog the colour of a glow stick clings to the underside of a heliconia leaf. The guide says the resplendent quetzal is harder this year — only February through April for the breeding pair, and after that the cloud takes them.

Chapter 03 · the story

1,983 hectares — the smallest national park in the country and one of its most visited. The rainforest walks down to the sand here, capuchins crossing the trail at ankle height and sloths hanging from almond trees ten metres above the beach.

Manuel Antonio is the geographical accident of a tropical forest that does not stop at the coast. The Pacific almond, manchineel, and balsa stand all the way to the high-tide line. Playa Manuel Antonio is a horseshoe of fine white sand inside the park, hemmed on three sides by jungle running up the cliffs of the Punta Catedral peninsula — once an island, now joined to the mainland by a tombolo of accreted sand that visibly thickens decade by decade. The forest meets the beach at a single sharp green edge.

The white-faced capuchins work in troops of fifteen to twenty along the main park trail. They are habituated to humans in the exact wrong way: they know that backpacks contain food, that zippers are simple, that screaming is unproductive. A male takes a sandwich straight out of a Dutch tourist’s hand at the picnic ground and is gone into the canopy in under two seconds. The guide says without changing tone: don’t bring food into the park. The squirrel monkeys come through ten minutes later in a single long line through the cecropia tops, a hundred of them, the smallest the size of a coffee mug.

Three-toed sloths live along the first kilometre of the Sendero Principal in the cecropia canopy that hangs over the trail. The guides know each tree. The animals descend once a week to defecate at the foot of their tree — the only time they touch the ground — and otherwise hang in the same fork for days at a time, taking sixteen breaths a minute when active and four when asleep. They are easier to spot than you would think, because they don’t actually move, and harder than you would think, because everything else also doesn’t move when it doesn’t want to be seen.

In the afternoon the Damas Estuary kayak goes inland through fifty kilometres of silver mangrove channels, the tide running backward through the roots. A juvenile American crocodile lies on a bank with its mouth open, thermoregulating. Roseate spoonbills work the shallows. The water is the colour of weak coffee from the tannin in the mangrove leaves, and the air at canopy level is full of the smell of low-tide mud.

National Geographic called Corcovado the most biologically intense place on earth in 1993 and never had to take it back. 2.5% of the planet's biodiversity sits on 0.001% of its surface. The road ends in Sierpe. After that it is boats.

The Osa Peninsula juts into the Pacific from the southwestern corner of the country like a thumb pressing against the ocean. Forty-two thousand hectares of Corcovado National Park cover most of it: the largest remaining stand of primary lowland rainforest on the Pacific coast of Central America, never logged, never cleared, the canopy structure unbroken since the Pleistocene. The road south from Sierpe ends at a river jetty. The peninsula is reached by a fifty-minute panga ride across the Sierpe estuary and out along the open Pacific to Drake Bay, which has a beach and a dirt strip and forty lodges scattered along the shoreline with no road connecting them.

The Sirena ranger station, three hours by boat down the coast, is the deep interior. The first hour off the beach you see spider monkeys, then a herd of collared peccaries crossing single-file with the smell of garlic and dog, then scarlet macaws in pairs in the high almendro trees making a sound that is half scream and half laugh. The trail crosses a small clear river. A Baird’s tapir — the largest land mammal in Central America, four hundred kilos, the colour of wet bark — is asleep in the shallows on her side. The guide stops walking and so do you. Tapirs are rare enough that the guides who saw one in 2024 talk about it like a birthday.

Jaguars are here. Twenty to forty individuals in the park, nocturnal, secretive, almost never seen. What you see instead is the evidence: scrape marks on a trail post, a paw print in mud, the silence of howler monkeys when a cat moves through. The naturalist points at a track the size of a tea saucer and moves on. Nobody on the trail says anything for ten minutes.

The afternoon boat goes seventeen kilometres west to Caño Island, a marine reserve where the water is the wrong colour for Pacific Costa Rica — clear, twenty-five-metre visibility, turquoise where it should be grey. White-tip reef sharks circle under the boat at anchor. The snorkel covers four bays. A green turtle the size of a coffee table eats a sponge two metres off your fin and does not look up.

San José is the part of the country the brochures hurry past on the way to the volcanoes. It is also where the gold is, where the coffee revenue built an opera house in 1897, and where the last casado happens.

The capital sits in the Central Valley at 1,170 m, a working city of three hundred thousand people that nobody flies in for. The colonial centre runs four blocks square around Avenida Central, the pedestrianised spine where vendors sell roasted peanuts and cones of green mango with chilli salt and the cathedral bells go at noon. Gallo pinto for breakfast at any soda — black beans and rice fried together with Lizano sauce, fried egg on top, a tortilla, sweet coffee — for under three dollars, and the line of taxi drivers eating beside you is the sign you have found the right counter.

The Mercado Central has been on the same block since 1880. The food court at the back is fifteen sodas in a U-shape around a central seating area, all serving variants of the casado: rice, black beans, sweet plantain, picadillo of the day, salad, tortilla, a fried egg, and the protein of choice — chicken, pescado, lengua, the gallina de campo. The plate costs four dollars. You order at the counter, sit on a stool, and finish with an agua dulce — sugarcane juice with lime, the pre-coffee working-class wake-up drink — and a slice of tres leches.

The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum sits underground beneath the Plaza de la Cultura, the basement of the same building that holds the National Theatre. Sixteen hundred pieces from the Diquís culture: frogs, eagles, shamanic figures in beaten gold, some twelve centuries old. The collection survived because the Banco Central bought it back from the antiquities market in the 1980s, piece by piece, with central-bank money. The lights are low; each case is its own small spotlight; the gold reads as yellow against black velvet.

Upstairs on the plaza, the Teatro Nacional was built in 1897 with a tax on every bag of coffee exported to Europe. The foyer is full of Italian marble and frescoes of nineteenth- century coffee harvests painted by Aleardo Villa in Milan, shipped across, installed under the dome. The country that became a republic without an army built its opera house first. That is the note pura vida sits on. Then the airport.
