Chapter 01 · the story

Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre inside this castle in May 1191 on the way to the Third Crusade, and the parish register still notes it in a margin. The stones do not care. They have outlasted the kingdom the marriage was meant to secure.

The castle squats at the edge of the old town, a thirteenth-century block of pale stone with arrow slits and a curtain wall and a chapel that was Byzantine before it was Lusignan before it was Ottoman before it was British. Richard was twenty-three the year he passed through. He had taken the island almost by accident, shipwrecked a fiancée onto its coast, fought the local Greek tyrant Isaac Komnenos for the inconvenience, won, and decided he might as well get married while everyone was here. He then sold Cyprus to the Knights Templar for a hundred thousand bezants and sailed on to Acre. The whole episode took six weeks.

The mezé tavernas in the old town serve the same fourteen small plates the carob-mill workers ate when the carob mills were still carob mills: grilled halloumi squeaking against the teeth, taramá the colour of coral, sheftaliá wrapped in caul fat, koupépia, lountza, the inevitable bowl of olives. The mills themselves are restaurants now — Karatello, Pop Life — with the iron presses left in place as decoration, the way some American towns leave a covered bridge. Carob was the second crop after wine for two thousand years on this coast. The pods went to make ship’s biscuit, gum arabic, the original substitute for chocolate. The trade ended in the 1970s when the harbour silted up.

Down the road at Kourion the Greco-Roman theatre still works. Two thousand three hundred years of acoustic engineering means a coin dropped on the orchestra floor is audible in the back row, and every July the Aphrodite Festival fills the seats for an opera the Romans would recognise. The stones look out over the sea toward Episkopi and the British sovereign base — Cyprus is EU, but two slices of it are still legally British — and the sun goes down into the water at exactly the angle the architects in 300 BC drew it.

Chapter 02 · the story

Aphrodite is said to have come ashore at Petra tou Romiou, foam-born out of a flat Mediterranean at the foot of a limestone stack the Romans called the Rock of the Greek. At sunset the water still goes that colour. The myth was, at minimum, a careful piece of site selection.

The cult was already old when Homer wrote about it. The sanctuary at Kouklia, fifteen kilometres east of the modern town, has foundation stones from the twelfth century BC and worship layers that run continuously through Mycenaean, Phoenician, Greek and Roman strata before the Christians shut it down in the fourth century AD. The goddess people prayed to here was not the marble nude of the museums. She was a conical black stone — a baetyl — and pilgrims came across the eastern Mediterranean to touch it. The stone is now in the small museum next to the ruins, behind glass, unremarkable, the way relics tend to be when the belief has gone out of them.

The Roman villas at the archaeological park down by the harbour were built for the same trade. The House of Dionysus has a floor mosaic, two thousand square metres of it, that shows the god returning from India in a chariot pulled by leopards while a panel beside him narrates the love affair of Pyramus and Thisbe. The tesserae are five millimetres across. The figures have eyes that follow you across the room because the artist set the darker stones at a deliberate angle to the light. None of this was meant for the public. These were private dining-room floors, laid for guests who would walk on them in soft shoes after dinner.

A kilometre north, the Tombs of the Kings cut down into the limestone in Doric peristyle courtyards open to the sky — not royal at all, in fact, but the burial vaults of the Ptolemaic administrative class, the Alexandria-trained civil servants the empire posted out to its provinces. The dead were laid in niches along the walls. The columns around the courtyards are still standing because they were carved from the bedrock itself, never quarried, never transported. They have been here, holding nothing up, for twenty-three centuries.

Chapter 03 · the story

Mount Olympus tops out at 1,952 metres — the EU's southernmost ski hill — and the painted churches around its lower slopes have hidden Byzantine frescoes inside barn-shaped roofs since the twelfth century. A day later, Ledra Street walks you across the last divided capital in Europe.

The road up from the coast climbs in hairpins through pine and golden oak to villages with two-syllable names — Pedoulas, Kakopetria, Galata — and the painted churches sit at the edge of each one, looking from the outside like long stone barns under steeply pitched shingle roofs. The roofs are the camouflage. They were built that way during four centuries of Ottoman rule, when a proper Byzantine dome would have invited the tax inspector and worse. Inside, the walls and ceilings are entirely covered, every square centimetre, with eleventh- to fifteenth-century frescoes in the Comnenian and Palaiologan styles — Christ Pantocrator staring down from a vault painted at head height because there is no dome to lift him.

Asinou is the one to start with. A custodian unlocks the door from a house across the meadow, points to the donor portraits of Nikephoros and his wife in a corner, mentions that the saints’ names are written in Greek next to each figure because most of the fourteenth-century congregation could not read, and goes back to his lunch. The church is on the UNESCO list with nine others in the range. Above all of it Mount Olympus — Chionistra in Greek, the snowy one — holds the wildflower meadows in April and a working chairlift in February. The southernmost ski resort in the European Union.

Then down to Nicosia, the only capital in the world split by a working military line. The Green Line was drawn by a British officer in a green pencil on a map in 1964 and made permanent by the Turkish landing of July 1974. You walk it. The Ledra Street crossing is a few metres of barriers and a passport check, and on the other side the muezzin replaces the church bell, the lira replaces the euro, and the Selimiye Mosque has been the Selimiye Mosque since 1570 but was the Cathedral of Saint Sophia for the three hundred and sixty years before that. Both names are still on the building. Neither has been painted over.

Last halloumi at Piatsa Gourounaki. Then the long flight east.

Final lunch at Piatsa Gourounaki taverna in Old Nicosia — grilled halloumi (the Cypriot squeak-cheese), meze plates of taramosalata + tzatziki + grilled octopus, a glass of Commandaria dessert wine. Drive to Larnaca, Qatar or Emirates east via Doha or Dubai to Hong Kong by next-day evening. Six nights — two in Limassol with Kourion, two in Paphos with the Tombs of the Kings, one in the Troodos painted churches, one in Nicosia across the Green Line. The colour of the Aphrodite's Rock at sunset already half-remembered.
