Out of Hong Kong on a Friday night, Malta by Saturday afternoon via Frankfurt — Lufthansa connection, fourteen hours total. Six nights ahead through the Maltese archipelago — three in Valletta for the UNESCO 16th-century Knights of St John capital and the Mdina silent city, two on Gozo for the rural sister island, one final day-trip to Comino for the Blue Lagoon swim. May is the cusp — Mediterranean spring, daytime 24 °C, water 21 °C, the limestone island finally green from the winter rains but not yet bleached by July sun, and the cruise-ship crowds haven''t arrived yet.

Chapter 01 · the story

The Knights of St John built Valletta in 1566, the year after they beat the Ottomans off these rocks, and they laid it out on a grid because they had run out of patience for medieval lanes. Five centuries later the grid still holds, and so does the grudge.

The Great Siege of 1565 lasted four months and the Knights had under nine thousand men against forty thousand Ottomans. They won, barely, and the Grand Master Jean de Valette ordered a new capital built on the Sciberras peninsula the next spring — a city designed by a military engineer, not an architect, with a Renaissance grid wide enough to march a regiment down and tall narrow houses on either side that throw shade by ten in the morning. The limestone is the colour of clotted honey. The street names are still in three languages.

Inside Saint John’s Co-Cathedral the floor is four hundred marble- inlay tombstones of knights, and the walls are gilded to a density that breaks the eye. In a side oratory hangs the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist — Caravaggio painted it in 1608 while in residence on Malta, fleeing a murder charge in Rome, and he signed it in the spreading pool of the saint’s blood on the canvas. It is the only painting he ever signed. The Knights made him one of their own; he stabbed another knight within the year and was stripped of the habit in absentia.

Out on the street the bus driver greets you in Maltese — a Semitic language descended from medieval Arabic, the only one in the world written in Latin script, salted with Italian and English loanwords because the island has been everyone’s stepping-stone. The bread is called ħobż. The word for thank you, grazzi, is from Sicily. The pastizzi is from somewhere older. The grid still runs north-south. The mountain is the sea.

Chapter 02 · the story

Ġgantija went up around 3600 BC, which means the people who quarried these limestone slabs were stacking them a thousand years before the first pyramid at Saqqara and five hundred before the first ring at Stonehenge. The locals called the builders giants, because what other explanation is there.

The temple complex sits on a low ridge above Xagħra village and you walk up to it through a path of prickly pear. The two apsidal structures share a single facade — the front slab is more than five metres tall and weighs over fifty tonnes — and the limestone is the softer coralline kind, easier to cut, which is part of how a Neolithic farming community without metal tools, without the wheel, without draft animals strong enough for the job, did this. The harder globigerina limestone is reserved for the altars inside. The doorway lintels are still in place. The plaster on some interior walls survives in patches.

Nobody knows what was worshipped here. Fat-figured stone statuettes came out of the floor — pregnant figures, seated figures, headless figures with sockets for replaceable carved heads — and they live in the National Museum in Valletta now. The site went out of use around 2500 BC for reasons nobody knows either. The next thousand years on Gozo are silent.

Down the coast at Dwejra the Azure Window collapsed in a March storm in 2017. Locals had warned for a decade that the limestone arch was thinning, and one morning the sea took it. The Inland Sea — a small saltwater lagoon connected to the open Mediterranean by an eighty-metre natural tunnel through the cliff — is still there, and small wooden luzzu boats still motor through it for five euros a head. The fishermen who run them are the grandsons of the fishermen who ran them. The arch is not coming back.

Chapter 03 · the story

Comino is three and a half square kilometres of limestone scrub between Malta and Gozo with a winter population of three and a summer population of ten thousand a day. The math of that ratio is the whole story of the Blue Lagoon.

The boat leaves Mġarr harbour at nine and the bay between Comino and the smaller islet of Cominotto opens up around a low headland twenty minutes later. The water is the kind of turquoise that looks colour-corrected — a chalk-white sandy bottom three metres down, refracting through clear sea, and nothing growing in the sand to muddy it. Boats moor in a loose ring around the perimeter and people swim the fifty metres across to Cominotto and back. The ones who arrived at nine have the colour to themselves for an hour. By eleven the ring is two boats deep.

Up on the ridge above the bay stands Santa Marija Tower, a square Knights-of-St-John watchtower built in 1618 to spot Ottoman galleys coming up from the south. From the parapet you see the whole geometry of the lagoon and the brown scrub of the rest of the island — no roads, no cars, one whitewashed chapel, one mothballed hotel at San Niklaw Bay, and a wind that doesn’t stop. The Knights stationed a garrison of thirty men here. The skeleton crew now is the three farmers who winter over, plus the chaplain who rows across on Sundays for Mass at the chapel.

The last boat back leaves at five. The lagoon empties in twenty minutes. By six the water is the colour it has been since the limestone first cracked open, and the only sound is the wind working on Santa Marija. The math reverses. The trick is to be the one boat still on the water at quarter past five, swimming back from Cominotto in the long evening light, while everyone else is queueing at the jetty for the ride home.

May 21 · Day 7 · the last one

Last pastizzi at Caffe Cordina. Then the long flight east.

Final morning at Caffe Cordina on Republic Street in Valletta — pastizzi (the Maltese ricotta-cheese filo pastry) and a kinnie bittersweet orange soda in the 1837 historic café. Public bus to Luqa airport, Lufthansa east via Frankfurt back to Hong Kong by Sunday morning. Six nights — three in the Valletta walled town, two on the Gozo limestone island, one on Comino at the Blue Lagoon. The colour of the limestone in the noon sun and the turquoise of the Blue Lagoon already half-remembered.
