Wheels down at Ted Stevens. Then nineteen hours of daylight.

Out of Hong Kong on a Saturday, Anchorage by Saturday afternoon — same day, the date line working in your favour. The sun barely sets up here in late June; nineteen hours of full daylight, three of blue-grey dusk, then back to it. Ten nights ahead on a single looping line — north into Denali for the long park road and the big five, a hinge night at Talkeetna for a flightseeing lap onto the Ruth Glacier, then south through Anchorage and onto the Kenai for tidewater glaciers, halibut on the Spit, and brown bears at the salmon run. The peak shows itself thirty percent of the time. The trip is built around the rest.

A bowl of halibut chowder at a wooden shack on the Homer Spit, one last drive up the Sterling Highway, and Anchorage by evening. Ten nights — every one of them yours, the smell of spruce and cold rivers already in the jacket, the shape of the mountain burned in even on the days it stayed behind the cloud.
